"This little parlor table was found at least two years ago. It was in horrible condition finish wise and had a bum leg from numerous bad repairs. But I had to have it because I could see so much potential. Once I started working on it, I learned it had been refinished at least once before and the veneer on the top was paper thin. What does that mean? That meant I had to be extra extra careful when I sanded so I didn’t go through the veneer and ruin the chances of staining the beautiful top. Yes, I could have removed the veneer and stained the wood underneath, but it wouldn’t have been the beautiful pieces of veneer that created this gorgeous design. Thank goodness, it was a success and the veneer was left intact.
After treating with Charles Neil pre color conditioner, I used General Finishes Georgian Cherry Gel Stain and sealed with Arm-R-Seal oil based topcoat. I carefully removed the little paw feet, boiled and scrubbed them and replaced the tiny nails holding them on to the legs. I think the bright brass made the table so regal looking!" - Newbac Designs

"I found myself choosing General Finishes Tuscan Red again...such a beautiful color which is rich, deep and amazing. Originally my plan had been to keep the veneer intact on this Vintage Art Deco Nightstand but unfortunately the repair wasn’t working. I was able to save the door's beautiful veneer so I first sanded it then added the stencil above and below to create a division between the two wood grains. The exterior was painted in the Tuscan Red and I added black wax to deepen the color. Inside the door was applied a pretty floral stencil and I added vintage brass hardware which was sprayed black then silver wax. Last but not least, the dovetail drawer was lined with Waverly fabric to pull all the colors together." - Steener's Attic Refinished, Repurposed and Antique Furniture

"Just completed this Vintage Seven Drawer Solid Mahogany Federal Desk & Chair. The beautiful wood surfaces were all sanded down and clear coated with General Finishes Arm-R-seal. This is a lighter mahogany which isn’t as much red as it is golden. The remainder was painted in black chalk paint and heavily distressed and then sealed. FRIDAY F.A.Q.: HOW CAN I PREVENT GEL STAIN FROM HARDENING IN THE CAN?
As the Gel Stain is used, the volume of stain in the can is displaced with air, causing the stain to start to cure. Gel Stains harden up more quickly than liquid oil stains for all the reasons folks love them - the extra colorants and solids. These colorants and solvents provide such great coverage but also harden up more quickly.
During storage, oxygen or moisture that's been introduced to the stain and sealed in the container will cure and thicken your stored product, ruining the leftovers. Here are some tips to ensure your Gel Stain remains in great working condition.
1. Decant the amount of stain you'll need into a foil covered bowl and reseal your can right away. Every minute the can is open the stain is curing.
2. Be sure to REALLY clean the chime and the lid of the can to assure a tight seal.
3. Use Bloxygen to help remove excess oxygen from your can of finish to help preserve it longer.
4. Store your sealed cans upside down.
5. Transfer any unused stain to a smaller container once finished with your project or buy Gel Stain in smaller cans to begin with. (Gel Stains are available in 1/2 pints, pints and quarts)
