When they shut the doors they locked out family, friends, and hired hands. Those are the individuals who support nursing home workers and keep them from being understaffed under normal conditions. Then you add a COVID outbreak and it became worse. These are horrible stories that while painful to hear, need to be told in order to push for reforms in how we respond in the future. Lest you think I am bashing those workers please know I am not. I took calls from them early in the outbreak hearing them cry, question decisions being made, asking why more help wasn't forthcoming, or what they could do better. They were being bashed in the media, ex-spouses were exploiting the situation to regain custody of children, people who didn't stay were being rehired at higher rates, restaurants refusing to deliver, etc and that kept going. So read this article but think about what could be done differently next time because there is always a next time. Then let your elected officials hear you.
