Did you see the temperature this morning? It's getting cold, fast!
If your home is on a well, a frozen water system means trouble. The ice can expand and crack the pipes. And, if the pipes are frozen, you won't have any water until you can get them thawed out.
Here are a few precautions you can take to prevent your water system from freezing up:
- Close the door where your tank and controls are - an open garage, pit, or pump house can let the cold in and freeze exposed pipes
- Make sure the tank and controls are insulated - your garage is probably well-insulated, but if your equipment is in a pit or pumphouse, double-check that the walls, door, or lid are insulated
- Check or install a heater near the pump equipment, especially if it's outside your house
It's a lot easier (and less expensive) to prevent your water system from freezing, than it is to thaw it out!
