Members of the Chabad Lubavitch of Northwest Connecticut visited Waterbury Hospital on Sunday leading a Chanukah parade to spread the message of hope and faith. The group also donated PPE and 200 Chanukah doughnuts for staff. We are grateful for the generosity and support.
Five of our colleagues including a respiratory therapist, an ICU nurse, an ED nurse and ED doctor, all of whom have been taking care of COVID-19 positive patients since March, were the first to get the COVID-19 vaccine, soon after it was delivered today.
Congratulations to Rising Star Award Winner Catherine Feliciano, ER PCA, Waterbury Hospital. “Hardworking, dedicated, truthful” are only a few adjectives that describe Catherine. As a PCA in the Emergency Department she works in a fast pace environment making sure patients and colleagues are cared for. Her job and that of her colleagues was only made more challenging this year as the emergency department and our organization has had to contend with a pandemic. Catherine’s attributes and work ethic shone even brighter. “She is fair and caring with patients and staff, alike, and always reliable,” said the colleague who nominated her. Catherine embodies all the values of organization, respect, compassion and excellence above all.
Another congratulations to Rising Star Award Winner Donna Guerra, Senior Administrative Assistant, Access Rehab. Donna consistently demonstrates the core values of the Waterbury HEALTH organization: integrity, compassion, accountability, teamwork, innovation, excellence and respect. Donna makes it her responsibility to stay one step ahead of things at Access Rehab Centers, anticipating needs and meeting them. As COVID-19 hit this year, Donna made sure her colleagues had plenty of supplies at times shopping on her own time to ensure all the clinics had what they needed. She volunteers to help with projects when others are facing heavy workloads or at critical times.
Donna is always thinking of innovative ideas that improve operations at Access. Donna’s attention to detail and work ethic go beyond her responsibilities at work. As a valued member of the Waterbury Hospital Auxiliary Inc., Donna brings her commitment to excellence, teamwork and innovative ideas to this group, helping a non-profit that helps dozens of people every year.
Congratulations to Rising Star Award Winner
Michael Bosco, RN
Psychiatry, Waterbury Hospital
Mike Bosco was a stand-out candidate for the raising Star Award, by consistently displaying positive attitude, unwavering focus on excellence and by consistently going above and beyond to ensure that the highest quality of care and services are provided to our patients.
“Mike is a tremendous asset to the Pomeroy 8 team. He effectively manages acute caseloads with ease. He demonstrates positive communication skills and is proactive between departments (Crisis, ED). Mike will never refuse an admission. Even with an acute unit, Mike was recently able to successfully take five admissions on his time, three of which he completed independently. When Mike is working, I use him as my point of contact because he knows what's going on with the unit, even if he is not designated as the charge nurse,” said Sherri Valentine who nominated him.
Rising Star Award!
As we say goodbye to one of the hardest years in our organization’s history, we take time to celebrate the teamwork of our colleagues of the Waterbury HEALTH network. This year our colleagues, as many in the healthcare field, have shown unmatched resilience, compassion, innovation and teamwork.
Our Employee Engagement Team chose a dozen of our colleagues for the new Rising Star Award (formerly the Golden ACE Award), from a large pool of nominations. Each recipient is recognized by his or her peers for consistently demonstrating our core values of integrity, compassion, accountability, teamwork, innovation, excellence and respect. Over the coming week we will be introducing you to our 2020 Waterbury HEALTH Rising Star Award recipients. Congratulations to all. You make us proud!

Congratulations to Rising Star Award Winner Chris Harman, Engineering Electrician, Waterbury Hospital. In a department that has worked tirelessly to maintain an aging building, COVID-19 brought new challenges and the Engineering Department met those challenges so that patients and colleagues could be safe. The electrical division is vital to the operations of a hospital and knowledgeable electricians like Chris make the job of others in the building easier. A long-time Waterbury Hospital employee, Chris is a quiet hard work. With his work ethic, kind demeanor and can-do attitude, Chris has won over all the colleagues he interacts with. “Chris helps everyone out without question and is well liked by everyone!” Comments and compliments come from patient floors as much as his own department.
“He’s a good dude” – said his supervisor simply.
Congratulations to Rising Star Award Winner Blerina Pulaha, AMG Thomaston, Medical Assistant, Alliance Medical Group. Blerina is the employee that everyone counts on in the office. She is fiercely loyal to the office, the providers, and the patients. She never tires and always handles herself professionally.
She is the type of employee that everyone wishes they had. You hear about them, but wonder if they actually exist. We are the lucky ones!
“I have been doing this job for 20 years and have never been this lucky! She never says no. She takes care of her work and is always helping others complete theirs. She was our command center in the COVID surge during the spring. She kept track of all the sick patients, testing, etc. She completely understands the importance of protecting the patients, but also protects the providers and staff. We have our rising star in Thomaston and we would love to let everyone know.” – Athena Barchini

Congratulations to Rising Star Award Winner Jasmine Ennis, Associated Women’s Health, Front Desk Medical Secretary, Alliance Medical Group. “Our office, due to our specialty, remained very busy during COVID, taking care of our prenatal patients, to be pregnant during COVID is a very stressful time for the Parents to Be. We had to change a lot of our visitor rules which excluded family members, spouses, and significant others the ability to participate in such an exciting time in the lives of our soon to be moms. Jasmine was able to maintain these new standards, even though difficult for the patient and their families.
“She made each patient feel so special. Jasmine managed to replace the excitement they would have gotten from their family members with her excitement for them. She celebrated the reveal of the baby’s sex, the excitement of each positive pregnancy test and managed to give the patients a little smile during a very difficult time.” – Maureen Donahue
Congratulations to Rising Star Award Winner Vivian Nesbitt, Finance Informatics Specialist, Waterbury Hospital. Vivian is a consummate professional with great passion for her work. Detail oriented and with a breadth of knowledge, Vivian has the respect of all her co-workers and everyone she meets professionally and personally. Vivian never passes off the issue at hand, she always gets back to you with a solution. She has warned the respect of all of those around her through hard work and dedication to her profession. She consistently demonstrates the core values of the organization, integrity, compassion, accountability, teamwork, innovation, excellence and respect.
“Vivian is such a pleasure to work with, her kindness, work ethics and knowledge are superb, she is a true asset to Waterbury Hospital, and I am grateful to work with such a wonderful person” said her supervisor Jim Philips.

Congratulations to Rising Star Award Winner Adrian Duszynski, Safety & Security, Waterbury Hospital. Adrian is humble, extremely intelligent and very capable at what he does. He manages schedules for four divisions in his department and it’s a true asset to the department, say his supervisors. No matter how small it is he always makes sure it gets done.
“He is the "go-to" person in his department. He treats everyone with respect and always offers to help anyone in need.” Said his supervisor.
What makes Adrian outstanding is that he takes on special projects and does with great diligence and enthusiasm, even helping other departments that need it. He loves his work, his colleagues and embodies the core values of organization with excellence in everything he does.

Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses
In the face of a pandemic, Waterbury Hospital nurses have worked exceptionally hard to care for patients. Their work has put a bright spotlight on the nursing profession. This quarter we are privileged to honor two nurses from our Pomeroy 9 Unit, which became was our designated COVID-19 unit.
Daelynn Mitchell, RN, Pomeroy 9
Daelynn Mitchell was nominated by a patient who singled her out after an incident where Daelynn stood out for her compassion, care and understanding. Here is what the patient wrote:
“Daelynn is that perfect combination of efficiency, professionalism and nurturing. After two days of excellent care, she was the first one to see me and I was feeling crummy, depressed and I dumped it all on her. I was not nice and I immediately apologized. What was amazing was how she handled it. She deescalated, was so caring and listened while I vented, which I really needed. If I had more time I could go on. You have something really special in this one. “
Thank you for all you do for our patients, Daelynn. You make us proud!
