We got another visit from our #luckyduck Long Shot! The temporary lower beak came off, so we came up with a more permanent solution until his custom made beak has a chance to come in. #ballyhoofarmandfiber #LongShottheDuck #newbeak #wecatertoall #cayugaducks Ballyhoo Farm & Fiber Emporium is at Watkins Family Dental. 22 September at 17:58 · Louisville, KY, United States · The last one was the temporary. This beak is the crown...or...something. Apparently Longshot really loves Dr. Watkins! He managed to tear his healing jaw apart over the weekend, so today he got another round of ducky dental surgery. Longshot is as brave as the team at Watkins are talented. He barely fussed and refrained from pooping. Here's hoping this fix does the trick! #hugyourdentist #dentistry #farmlife #worldscollide #louisville #longshot #cayuga #snappingturtle #ducksofinstagram
We want to express our deepest condolences to the Ballyhoo Farm and Fiber Emporium on the death of Longshot the Duck. It was truly a pleasure working with you on trying to give him the best shot after such a traumatic injury. Ballyhoo Farm & Fiber Emporium 25 September at 15:17 · There will be a longer post later. Intending to honor self-care, I won't finish it today and that's okay. It boils down to numbers, really. 1 turtle, 2 bites. 4 days of maggots. 51 tube feedings. 60+ bandage changes. 2 dental surgeries. 19 days of life. 2 prosthetic molds that arrived the day he died. To borrow from friends, because I can't process more than this today, here are 10 Good Things About Longshot the duck. 10) He brought me joy for a whole week, and brought a beautiful hen with him that has made great friends with my other two Cayuga crosses. 9) He impressed me with his intelligence. When a shower wasn't enough, he learned to step on the bathtub stopper so he could have a bath at the same time! 8) He taught me how to listen to the language of ducks. 7) He taught a great many people about the anatomy of ducks! 6) He helped me practice patience. 5) His bravery inspired me and others to be more courageous and complain less. 4) He gave me the opportunity to overcome my fear of tube feeding. 3) He gave artists, experts, and craftspersons the opportunity to explore and hone their skills. 2) He was a tremendous ambassador for the value of life. What makes a life worth saving? When is it "worth it" to try? Is the value of life relegated to a dollar amount? Longshot answered all of that himself. 1) He brought hope and compassion to the forefront of our lives. Despite everything happening around us, despite a truly broken world where we are barraged by images of conflict and divide, Longshot brought people together. He gave non-farmers a glimpse into our world. He allowed experts in veterinary care, biotech engineering, pharmaceuticals, and dentistry the opportunity to express generosity, love, altruistic healing, and compassion, and I lack the words to express my gratitude. If a duck less than a year old with unsurvivable trauma can leave such an impact in 19 days, think what we can do with our lives. It may be a Longshot, but there is always hope.
