Several federal buildings in Louisville, Kentucky have been ordered to be closed for the week (September 21 to September 25). The reasons for the closure have not been announced, but there is belief that it could be due to an announcement regarding the Breonna Taylor investigation. The U.S. District Courthouse is among the buildings ordered to be closed. In the order, signed on Friday September 18 by Chief Judge Greg Stivers, states, “All matters scheduled for in-court appearances during this time period shall be continued or converted to videoconference proceedings, at the discretion of the presiding judge.” Louisville’s U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services field office will be closed for the week as well, with its website stating the closure is “due to a court order.” NBCNEWS.COM Louisville federal buildings close for week as city awaits state findings on Breonna Taylor

Compassionate release is one of the main ways a prisoner can be released early from federal prison, and it involves a judge approving a reduced prison sentence. In order for this occur however, the prisoner must first ask for the warden to approve their request. During the initial three months of the COVID-19 pandemic, upwards of 10,000 federal prisoners applied for compassionate release. Most of these requests; however, are either denied completely, or denied a response at all. In total, less than 1 percent of compassionate release requests were approved. #wsdefense #madisoncriminaldefense THEMARSHALLPROJECT.ORG Thousands of Sick Federal Prisoners Sought Compassionate Release. 98 Percent Were Denied.

Define American is an advocacy group, aiming to change how Americans view immigrants. They will start by shifting how they are viewed on TV, in hopes to change “the conversations in Hollywood’s writers’ rooms” and “pave the way for immigration policy changes in Washington”. According to research, TV shows do not accurately depict immigrants. Define American hopes that showing immigrants in a new light on TV will result in more Americans being in favor of letting immigrants into the United States. During a traffic stop, if a law enforcement officer suspects you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs, you may be asked to perform one of the three standard field sobriety tests. The three standard tests are the walk-and-turn test, horizontal gaze nystagmus test and the one-leg stand test. However, according to a study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) these tests are not always accurate. If you are charged with an OWI, it is advised that you contact an experienced attorney in order to challenge the results of your field sobriety test, breathalyzer test and chemical test(s). At Welch & Schmeiser Criminal Defense Group, we take a science-based approach to defending OWI cases. We routinely aid our clients in avoiding the grave impacts a Wisconsin OWI conviction entails. #wsdefense #madisoncriminaldefense WSDEFENSE.COM Field Sobriety Tests - Madison Wisconsin Criminal Defense
According to the Sentencing Project, Native American youths are three times more likely to end up incarcerated when compared to their white peers. Federal policies such as forcing relocation of Native youths to boarding schools from the 1860s continuing into the 1960s resulted in family bonds being broken and a cultural identity being stripped. It is believed that these numerous generations of trauma have resulted in Native children being more susceptible to ending up in the criminal justice system. It is speculated that the impacts of the atrocities committed by the government have impacted each generation of Native American youth up until today. #wsdefense SLATE.COM The Unique Problems Facing Native American Youths in the Criminal Justice System

The November 2020 United States presidential election led to four more states voting for legalization of recreational marijuana use. Despite some Wisconsin cities such as Madison taking steps to decriminalize marijuana, the state of Wisconsin still remains as one of the 15 states that has yet to outlaw marijuana use both recreationally and medicinally. Under Wisconsin law, possession of marijuana is a misdemeanor and any subsequent offenses are considered felonies. Despite numerous states’ recent legislation decriminalizing marijuana use, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal in all 50 states. Just like an alcohol OWI, having a prohibited amount of marijuana in your system while you are operating behind the wheel will result in an OWI charge. #wsdefense #madisoncriminaldefense Learn more on our new blog post: https://qoo.ly/39pzfi
The legal age of consent in Wisconsin is 18 years old. If you have sexual intercourse with a minor who is 17 years old or younger, you could very well face a statutory rape charge. The term “statutory rape” is derived from the fact that the inability of a minor to participate in giving consent is written in the Wisconsin Statutes. If you are convicted of your statutory rape charge, it will result in your reputation being severely negatively impacted. There are few charges that are as damaging to your reputation as a sexual assault charge. Even the accusation of this crime results in a stigma calling for the need to clear your name.
