Happy October! This month, Jill’s Saturday 10 am yoga class will alternate “Centering on” various yogic themes as we connect our practice on our mats to our lives off the mat. Tomorrow’s practice is “Centering in a time of Change”.
What’s Centering Yoga?
Relax, renew, and restore your mind, body and spirit with a specially designed sequence of poses that focus on centering in your own body. This class offers an hour-long practice to cultivate mindfulness and non-judgmental awareness of body alignment, sensations, and energy flow. Fast-paced movement (through asanas) and rest (through guided meditation in savasana) are both incorporated to encourage centering in the physical body to quiet the mind. This class is physically challenging enough to get a little sweaty, but not as demanding as a power yoga or vinyasa flow class

Om is more than just a beginning or just an ending though it seems appropriate to begin our meditation challenge here. This simple word carries an energy that allows us through practice, repeating, meditating or chanting to connect with the universe. Om helps to connect us with our inner being and overcome obstacles in our paths.
Science has shown that by chanting and repeating Om there has been less activity in the limbic system which is the area of the brain connected to stress and anxiety. Just like singing, playing or listening to music reduces the stress hormone cortisol.
Try to join us today as we sit for a few moments to the wonder of Om.
Not into chanting? Try listening to recordings of Om, write the word Om on paper, draw or color the symbol or silently repeat in your mind.

The term comes from the Japanese words “rei,” meaning universal, and “ki,” which means vital life force energy that flows through all living things. Reiki, an abundant, gentle spiritual energy is not tied to any specific religion or nationality. A reiki practice can promote relaxation, help reduce stress and anxiety, and create balance in the body.

Focus on your breath - Start your meditation by taking several deep breaths. Try to focus your mind on your breathing and feel how each breath affects your body. Your breath will be your guide throughout meditation.
Notice as the breath enters your body - the length of the inhale, temperature of the breath and where it travels to in the body.... top to bottom, left to right, front to back diagonally across.
Notice the breath as it leaves the body - length of the exhale, temperature of the breath and the exit path as it leaves the body.

Often considered the most basic form or meditation is the awareness of one's own breath. Focusing your attention on the breath alone draws you into the present moment. Whether you are in yoga class, in a stressful situation or taking a walk in nature, you can use breath awareness to center yourself and regroup. Try it now.
Close your eyes and take a few deeper than normal breaths then allow the breath to return to its natural pace. Now allow yourself to just notice the breath as it is showing up in this moment.

There are two things that we know to be truthful for people. We all have a balanced center within us which is a place of wisdom, love and harmony. And we also all find ourselves stepping away from that balanced center time and time again. Our meditation practice can be our road map to help us get back to that balanced center, where everything is possible.
Rumi often spoke of true love, true acceptance and the dedication to find truth in life. He believed in the beauty of the human soul and its ability to share love, show love and exude love across time, religions and languages. If we can find the love within ourselves and surrender to what our balanced center is telling us, just maybe, we can share it completely with the world.

“The Thief left it behind, the moon at my window.” Ryokan
In this haiku we laugh at the naiveness of a burglar, who decides to rob a poor zen monk named Ryokan. The irony of the burglars act is that he misses the one greatest treasure that Ryokan possessed - "The Moon," Enlightenment. The burglar stole worthless or meaningless things and Ryokan even ran after the thief with the last cushion that he had forgotten. Any burglary of personal things was meaningless because, well, who can take the moon from his window? Ryokan invites us all to join in his laughter.
As you begin your meditation try imagining the world from Ryokan’s perspective. What if you were robbed, or lost your personal possessions.
Would it matter? What do you consider your greatest treasure?

Core exercises train and condition the muscles of the pelvis, lower back, abdomen and hips, essentially making us better at every movement you preform. Pilates is a great way to add core work into your routine. It is low impact, and adaptable to all fitness levels. Try it with us on Tuesdays at 4:45p.

Sa Ta Na Ma can be a family meditation in which yogis of all ages could join in with its short mantras and hand mudras. It helps to clear the mind and bring complete balance to the mind.
As you say each mantra try aligning them with the hand mudras as listed below.
Sa– index finger and thumb
Ta– middle finger and thumb
Na– ring finger and thumb
Ma– little finger and thumb
Now let’s sit:
“Find a comfortable seated position with the legs comfortably crossed and the spine straight. The hands rest upon the knees and the palms face upward.
Begin to chant Sa Ta Na Ma out loud, then after a few minutes whisper the mantra for a few minutes, and repeat the mantra silently for another few minutes.
Now try Reversing the Sa Ta Na Ma mantra and chant silently for a few minutes, whisper for a few more and chant out loud for the last few minutes.
Remember to have your fingers alternate mudras for each syllable chanted, linking each syllable of Sa Ta Na Ma with its corresponding mudra.”

Sitting Like a Mountain
The mountain embodies the essence of what we strive for in meditation: Stability. Uprightness. Being unmovable by the winds of the world. Sometimes our mountains are enshrouded in clouds or covered in fog, perhaps so much so that from a distance we can’t even see there is a mountain. Some of us live our lives in this way too; living in a mental fog, unsure of who we even are. The practice of meditation is to support the process of the clouds and fog to settle so we can see the whole mountain clearly; we can become more whole, steady and unwaivering.
For today imagine your fog lifting your clouds dissolving.... what do you see?

WIM instructors are busy making studio adjustments and preparations for reopening. They are excited to be greeting your masked faces 😷 in class starting next week.
Is it weird practicing with a mask on? Yup, at first, but it’s totally doable.
Is it worth it to mask up for class when you can practice at home with us virtually? That’s for you to decide and not for anyone else to judge. We love you for either decision.
That said, masks are required at all times while you are in the studio.
A few other housekeeping items:
• Remember to bring your own mat and props
• Leave all unnecessary items in your vehicle so that when you enter the studio, you can hang up your coat, and go straight to your mat space quickly and efficiently.
• If you forget a mask, we will have disposable ones available
• Class sizes are limited to 6, so register early to reserve your space.

As you look at the March schedule online, you will notice classes that are being held in person will have an ‘In Studio’ notation. {first picture}
It is also possible to filter class listings by location (ie in person or online) to help you register for the class of preference. {second picture}
Some things to note:
• In Studio classes are limited to 6 participants and registration is required.
• WIM reserves the right to switch to a fully virtual offering if there are not a minimum of 2 participants registered. You will be notified by email if this switch is made.
• Because class sizes are limited, we take your reservation very seriously. We trust that you will make all reasonable attempts to honor your reservation or cancel up to 1 hour before class time.
Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions about registration. We’d be happy to help you get set up!

How fun are these Chakra stickers? We’ve placed them on the floor throughout the studio to help with mat placement. Placing your mat behind the sticker will allow for 6 feet between mats in all directions. No extra math required.
