Credit is an important part of financial planning. Take some time out of your day to assess your credit goals and needs. It's also important to educate your kids early on credit as well!
Here are some tips on what to teach them and how they can start building credit.
- First, advise them on saving
- Teach them the difference between a debit & credit card
- At 18, encourage them to sign up for a student credit card to start building credit
- Co-sign on a loan or lease for them
- Make sure they are reporting all forms of credit to the credit bureau: internet bill, phone bill, utilities, etc.
- Once you have gone through this list, ensure that you continue to jointly monitor credit and continue educating your children on their finances.
