Kathy’s Story: Feeling Empowered After Weight-Loss Surgery As a busy human resources professional, Kathy Baisi understands the importance of getting recognized and rewarded for hard work. While she had always exhibited confidence throughout her career, Kathy felt “judged” by others concerning her weight. “My excess weight made me feel like I had limited opportunities. I felt like I was being held back because of other people’s perceptions of me,” Kathy explained. Last year, we made a major upgrade to our electronic medical records system. While this was a behind-the-scenes transition for our patients, our front-line staff and IT department worked overtime to put this technological advancement into place. Oak Park’s Julian Middle School is named after renowned scientist and Oak Park resident Percy Lavon Julian, who moved to the village in 1950. Julian, who was born in Montgomery, Alabama, and whose own grandfather was a slave, was one of the first African Americans to receive a doctorate in chemistry. He became a pioneering research chemist, whose work laid the groundwork for the medicinal production of cortisone, corticosteroids, and birth control pills. In 1973, Julian became the second African American to be elected to the National Academy of Sciences, and in 1993 Julian was honored on a stamp by the U.S. Postal Service.
