I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my former public defender colleague and awesome dude Danny Goode. Danny allowed me to sit as his second chair for my first jury trial. I didn't have the faintest clue what I was doing, and he was patient, kind, and generous in showing me the ropes.
Most of my best stories about closing arguments come from Danny. If you've never heard the legendary / infamous tales of the beached whale argument, the grand-pappy's watch switcheroo, or ball of lint gambit, you are truly deprived.
Whenever Danny talked about his wife and daughter, he radiated pure love. Thank you for the mentorship, guidance, and memories my friend. You will be missed.

Our former boss and Chief Public Defender Cal Bain along with Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney Colin Stolle did the heavy lifting, but we were honored to play a small role. We’re particularly grateful to City Councilman Michael Berlucchi who took the reins on this issue and gave us the chance to make our case. There is a long way to go, but we’re thrilled to see this important issue gaining momentum.

Our names are Taite Westendorf and Bassel Khalaf. We’re criminal defense attorneys in Virginia Beach. We’re writing you in regards to Disney releasing the “classic” film The Shaggy D.A. on your streaming platform Disney +. As I’m sure you already know, this movie features an Old English Sheepdog who runs to be a district attorney. We feel that this is complete and utter bullshit and that you owe all criminal attorneys an apology.
To make clear, we’re not opposed to the entirety of your dogs doing human stuff film catalog. In fact, we’re huge fans of the Air Bud franchise. After we wrap up a hard day of lawyering, we’ll often debate which is superior between Golden Receiver and 7th Inning Fetch. But while dogs catching touchdowns and line drives is good harmless fun, you took it way too far with The Shaggy D.A. Criminal lawyers are highly trained professionals who litigate complex issues that determine whether people serve decades in prison or even get executed. Dogs can’t be lawyers you fucking asshole.
Listen Bob, would Disney make a movie about a dog who pilots an airplane and nosedives into the ground instantly incinerating all the innocent passengers? How about a film about a dog surgeon who performs c-sections killing mothers and unborn children? Not so funny now is it you prick.
Obviously, you’re a smart guy. You run the most powerful entertainment company in the world. As family men with young children, we’ve spent shit tons of our money on Disney products to help pay your ridiculous salary. Since we’ve supported you, it’s hard for us to understand why you would attack us personally.
We’ve always been under the impression that we were doing complicated and important work that serves our community. Well according to you, we’re such brain damaged imbeciles that an actual ass sniffing canine could replace us without the system missing a beat. Fuck you and the horse you rode in on.
