This may be a little late, but we'd love to celebrate two unsung heroes for the months of July and August! Please give a big shout out to Kendall and Jamie Sue for being nominated for Employee of the Month for July and August!
"Sometimes I forget Kendall works here, because she is holed up collecting life saving blood every day of her job, but then she materializes to save the day in ER, ICU, and Patient Care. She still has her amazing multi-purposeful skill set and a how can I help attitude."
"Jamie Sue is wherever there is a need in the hospital. It doesn't matter if she needs to drop what she is doing to throw on a greeter coat, or morph into central supply for a week, she knows how to do so many things and does them with a smile!"
Thank you both and everyone else for being daily heroes and heroines!
This tiny baby has no name yet! Put your suggestions in the comments below!
He is an 8-week-old male Pomeranian. He presented to the ER at our sister hospital in Illinois the day after he went to his forever home because he was having diarrhea and not eating well. Upon presentation, no name had a very low blood sugar. He was put on IV fluids and a dextrose drip to bring his blood sugar back up to a normal range. No name stayed at the hospital for 24 hours until he was eating on his own and then was able to go home to his new parents!
Tank is a sweet boy who unfortunately had to retire early as a blood donor. He donated for 1 year, donating 6 units of blood and saving 15 lives! Thank you Tank and his family for everything you do and we couldn't do this without you! Tank, remember, don't forget to come visit us!

Baxter suddenly went blind at the age of one for a reason still unknown. His owners didn’t have to worry about the cost of his speciality appointments with the ophthalmologists at Port City Veterinary Referral Hospital. Baxter was insured with Healthy Paws, so they could do every test needed to find out what was going on and what treatment would be best. He still has some ongoing issues with his eyes as a result of the disease process, so having pet insurance has allowed them to continue follow-ups with Port City and make sure they’re doing everything they can for him.
Besides his eyes, he’s also a huge trouble maker and gets into things when you least expect and Healthy Paws has paid for all of his ER bills. His owners are so glad they insured him when he was a young pup so he’s gotten the best of care his whole life!
"He’s only three now and I’m pretty sure insurance has paid for itself until he’s at least 20 at this point! I just hope he lives that long." 💚#PetInsuranceTails
Did you know that October is Pit Bull Awareness Month? The American Pit bull terrier may have a bad reputation, but under all of that muscle is a heart of gold and one of the most misunderstood breeds! They are gentle, loyal, loving, strong willed, and make amazing blood donors! Pit bulls were bred for a brutal lifestyle in Great Britain. The bulldog was crossed with either the white English terrier or the black-and-tan terrier to create powerfully-built dogs for fighting. Blood sports such as bull and bear baiting were popular in England as early as the 1200s. Dogs would enter pits and fight the giant animals for entertainment (hence the name). When baiting became illegal in England in the 1800s, pit bulls were turned on each other and illegal dog fighting became prevalent. Often dogs with bad reputations are guilty of the most dog attacks because they are bought, and trained, for the purpose of being aggressive—not because they're inherently so. Any poorly-trained dog can be violent. Pit bulls are actually naturally warm and kind-hearted canines!
Our blood donor family is deeply saddened by the loss of one of our heroes, Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee was a blood donor for 7 years, he donated 41 units of blood and saved 111 lives! Unfortunately, Bruce was diagnosed with cancer about 5 weeks ago, which forced him to retire as a blood donor. He fought with everything he had but recently lost his battle with cancer. He was a very special boy and brought so much joy and love to everyone here at Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital. You will be dearly missed Brucey, and now you can be a hero with wings!
Say hello to Barklee! Our blood bank is so sad to see you retire early and we will miss seeing that beautiful face! Barklee donated 11 units of blood, which saved 28 lives in 3 years! Happy retirement beautiful girl and don't forget to stop by to see us!

"The good and the bad sometimes do not equally weigh each other out, but being part of a strong and brilliant team makes that a bit easier." Nicole couldn't have said it better! The compassion and solidarity our veterinary staff have for their jobs and each other gets us through the tough days together. #EthosVetLife #VetLife #VetTechLife

Happy Retirement Bear! Bear became a donor hero in 2018; during his hero days he donated 12 units of blood and saved 25 lives. Bear and his mom had to move out of state so he couldn't be a donor hero anymore. We will miss you buddy and good luck on your new adventure!

Ben is a rescue from Soul Dog Rescue. His owner was fortunate to have rescued him from the "wash" a dried up river in Chinle, Arizona, living with his mom and 3 siblings. The family was spotted when momma would take the pups across a highway to get food from the local gas station and then return to the dried up brush area. The pack was completely feral and could not be caught or handled. Soul Dog Rescue was called to come and help save them.
After 2 days of hiding and chasing the pups, they were finally able to catch them and bring them back to CO where Ben's owner was once again lucky enough to foster and rehab the babies and they all found their forever homes! Ben's was his owner's first foster fail, and Ben is now also a therapy dog. Ben has such a huge heart, he wanted to help others in need. Please welcome Ben to our donor family!
Some TLC is much deserved for this little guy who went through a 7 hour long open chest surgery recently! We're so glad he's okay, and hope that he enjoyed his cuddles!
