A little local history is part of our office building. Love to think about what Hickory was like in the 1920s! It was amazing that a community of our size would have a public library during that time.

The building pictured is the former Elliott-Carnegie Library, a branch of the well-known Carnegie library system. The library opened in 1922 and was an integral part of the maturation of the city as well as the movement for a tax-based library system in North Carolina, which was established in Durham in 1897, making Hickory one of the early leaders within the movement. This library served the citizens of Hickory for 30 years and was the last public library anywhere to receive a grant from the Carnegie Foundation, which once funded 2,507 facilities worldwide. The interior of the library was remodeled in the 1950's when it was converted for use as radio station WHKY. The small, one-story structure sits at 415 1st Avenue NW, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
