Today, @windermereprepschool IB Visual Arts students participated in a Zoom class with team members from De la Gente, a non profit coffee co-op in Guatemala. De la Gente works with local independent coffee farmers to help them share best practices, repair or purchase equipment, provide resources for plant research or assistance in exporting the coffee to the US and Canada. The lesson included the history and politics of growing coffee, climate change, migration, social issues, sustainable farming practices and a bit of the process of coffee growing. For the last four weeks, 7th grade students have explored the US government system in a project called Create-a-Candidate. Students learned about the three branches of government, political parties, campaign platforms, campaign marketing, writing speeches on behalf of their candidate, and today culminated their unit by performing those speeches for the entire 7th grade. Students at school, and from home, participated in this process demonstrating the Representative Democracy that makes up our United States government system. It is an important tradition for our school to pause and honor our nation's veterans each year on Veterans Day. This whole school gathering brings each division of our school together and is an event that we have all come to look forward to on November 11th. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 safety considerations, we are unable to bring our school together in person this year for a Veterans Day celebration. However, in keeping with our tradition, we will pause on Wednesday to recognize and acknowledge our veterans with a virtual program. We invite you to join us by pausing to watch this program on Veterans Day from wherever you are. We also invite you to share this video with any veterans that you know as a way of saying thank you on behalf of the WPS community.

@wpsmslakers is excited to announce that Mrs. Rayle’s (Mrs. King) class has placed FIRST IN THE NATION in the latest Sumdog Math Competition! The scores are based on averages, so although we have some high achievers, it was the collective effort of the whole class that allowed them to raise the roof and achieve this amazing accomplishment! The Fifth grade team set some tight guidelines for this competition, which included no class time to work on this task. The students came together to push, encourage, and support each other during their personal free time, recess, lunch and after school to achieve this goal. The spirit of Unitas was definitely present in the daily happenings of the class.

Happy Lunar New Year and Year of the Ox, also known as Chinese New Year, Tet, Seollal, Losar, and Spring Festival. It marks the first new moon in the lunisolar calendars traditional to many east Asian countries. During this time families gather for celebrations that include food, gifts, dancing, and honoring ancestors. We wish everyone a safe and healthy holiday! @windermereprepschool
Yesterday, 7th and 8th grade Lakers were able to hear from Mr. Robert McDonald. Mr. McDonald graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point in 1975 in the top 2% of his class with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. He is the retired chairman, president, and CEO of Procter & Gamble. McDonald served in the Army from 1975 - 1980, reaching the rank of Captain, obtaining his Ranger tab, and being assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division. On July 30, 2014, Mr. McDonald was approved by the US Senate as the 8th United States Secretary of Veteran's Affairs under President Barack Obama. Mr. McDonald worked hard to fight homelessness amongst veterans during his tenure. In July 2020, McDonald was appointed by the George W Bush Institute as the April and Jay Graham Fellow; and in September 2020, McDonald was selected by presidential nominee, Joe Biden, to be a member of his transition team's advisory board. It was great listening to him speak to our students about civic duty and the United States government. @wpsmslakers @windermereprepschool #government
