Just before lunch a resident stopped in with a scammer still on his phone! He went on to explain that originally a man from the IRS called to report that he owed over $9,000 in taxes and needed to take care of that or he would be arrested. He was directed to go to the Target store at Fox River Mall and purchase a prepaid debit card and provide the number. Fortunately, a Target employee was wise to this and stopped the man from making the purchase.
With the “IRS” guy still on the phone, the man was told to head to another location to make the purchase. Our resident started to get wise to this scam and instead drove to our police department. Once in the lobby he began to give the man an earful stating he was actually at the police station. The “IRS” guy hung up the phone, however his phone rang again – this time with the Caller ID showing Neenah Police Department. The caller said that he was Officer Andy Gibson and that this man was going to be arrested.
People ask how this can happen and people fall for this, but what these scammers are doing is playing on your emotions, getting you to think with your heart and not your head!
Kudos to the Target employee for diverting the man from making the purchase!

Tax filing season is here again.
