You almost didn’t make it
We almost might not have made it.
Thankfully, with a second opinion and the support of our amazing Doctor (Dr Mike Awad) & staff. The word termination was just that, a word. Nothing more. After 20 weeks, no longer a haunting decision to have to ever consider. No longer a threat to your existence or mine.
Your grandmothers incessantly prayed for us since the day they found out you’d be arriving. We even had our doctor and his staff praying for your safe arrival and my survival. Everyone’s prayers were answered when you arrived intact and simply perfect. All went well in the operating room.
We weren’t in the clear just yet, you had to learn how to breathe and eat. You won’t remember, but you spent two weeks in the NICU, weeks that seemed like an eternity for both your dad and I. I’ll never forget those countless tearful walks to and from the nicu. My eyes still well up at the thought of the agony I felt being apart from you. All of this now is just a memory, a deep imprint in my mind of the heartache we lived.
Life is full of small miracles and you are ours.
My dearest son, you have no idea how much of a blessing you are to your family. You are our tangible answered prayer. Your smile, your laugh, the breath in your lungs, your beating heart, all of your 10 fingers & toes, YOU are a miracle. Tomorrow marks a year since your arrival and even though it’s not under the best circumstances, we will celebrate you. All of you, and those who made your journey into this world possible.

I wanted to share a ray of sunshine from a special young man who is thinking of others, something we all really need right now. I opened my email and it was flooded with new updates in workflows at the hospital that are changing by the minute, the latest numbers that are being modeled for the medical community in Chicago, and the lack of resources we still do not have that are essential to our work. It is a sobering reality that we are all a part of right now. And then right in the middle of this, I found this Landon's message to me and my Dad. Thank you Landon for being the incredible person you are. Who knows what you will grow up to be one day, but today, you are OUR hero!
