Woodland Contractors began operating in a home office in 1987. With three employees, Bill Smeltzer was the builder, manager, job foreman, and bookkeeper. Initially, projects included custom build additions, renovations, and subcontract work to larger construction companies. As the size of projects grew to include new home construction and commercial projects, additional employees were hired as the need for more skilled tradesman and laborers arose. Office staff was hired to perform bookkeeping and payroll duties. Steady work, competitive wages, and a benefit package encouraged employees to stay, resulting in a very low employee turnover.Responsible management encouraged growth and in 1993, Woodland Contractors outgrew the home office and moved to its current location on King Street in South Lebanon Township, which had once been a shoe manufacturing company.
