Drain & Check your water heater
As we move into the colder months, your water heater will be working much harder to provide hot water. Be sure it is in top shape by draining and checking your water heater. Shut off the power and water supply valve. Carefully drain the tank by connecting a hose to the drain valve and running it to a nearby drain. Be sure you empty out the old water. Draining & flushing the water heater removes sediment buildup which block proper heat transfer and damages your water heater. This will help lengthen the life of your water heater. It will also enhance its heating efficiency, keeping your showers nice and hot!

Seal Any Gaps
In areas where pipes enter your home it is normal to find gaps between the walls and the pipes that develop over time. These gaps allow cold air to enter the interior of the home. This will drive up your energy bills and could even cause pipes to freeze and burst. Check the exterior of your home for everywhere a pipe enters. If you find a gap fill it with weather stripping, caulking, and insulation.

Test Your Water Heater’s Pressure Relief Valve
Carefully test the water heater's pressure relief valve (Danger: water is very hot) by lifting up on the lever and letting it snap back. The valve should allow a burst of hot water into the drainpipe. If not, call a professional to have a new valve installed. Caution: if your water heater is more than five years old and the pressure relief valve has never been tested, you can actually cause a leak by testing older valves that have corroded or stuck seals. A plumber should be consulted.

Shut off the main water valve when leaving the home for an extended time
If you head out of town to visit grandma or find a warmer climate be sure to shut off the main water valve and drain excess water from the system by opening the faucets at the highest and lowest points in the home. Be sure the heat remains on and set to no lower than 55°F.
So this is what happens when you leave a house unoccupied and your water heater leaks. The entire house has to have the subfloor and floor coverings replaced. Also, the drywall at least 4 feet from the floor in each room, the bathroom completely, new primer and paint due to mildew and mold, and on, and on, and on......

Turn off outside water valves to prevent frozen pipes
When the temperature drops below freezing, water pipes in your home have the potential to rupture, creating an expensive disaster in your home's basement. The average homeowner's expense for a pipe rupture is about $15,000, according to State Farm Insurance.
To protect against frozen pipes, turn off all outside water valves and then look for pipes in un-insulated areas of the home, such as those running along the home's outer walls. These pipes are the most likely to freeze and should be wrapped with foam or towels for the season. In cases of extreme cold, it's a good idea to let faucets drip slowly in order to encourage water flow.
Turn off outdoor faucets at their shutoff valves. Open the faucet and then open the bleeder cap on the shutoff valve to drain any water out of the pipe. If you don’t drain the pipe, it can still freeze and crack. Leave the bleeder cap open with a bucket underneath to catch any drips. If the dripping continues, your shutoff valve needs to be replaced.
Professional, service team is imppeciable, on time and work in timely matter I would certainly use there service again and they get the job done. very happy customer https://bit.ly/2FP4Wqs

Know the location of your home's main water valve
In case of a major incident - such as a pipe bursting - when you might need to immediately shut off all the water in the home, it's critical to know where the main water valve is located. This valve is usually located next to the water meter and should be kept in good condition. To maintain your home's main water valve and keep it in working order, open and close it once a year.
So we attempted to clear a sewer blockage with the main sewer machine which wouldn’t go through. So we had to start a 3:30am this morning to take apart the cast iron drains to clean them out the old fashioned way. So much fun being number 1 at number 2!!!!!

Conserve your home’s energy – but don’t go too low!
If at any time during the winter you’ll be away from your home, you may be tempted to turn down the heat to save energy. However, turning the heat too low increases the risk of frozen and ruptured pipes. The damage caused by such an accident will be even greater if the rupture goes unnoticed for days, weeks, or even months.
To best prevent a pipe rupture, the home's temperature should be set no lower than 45F. This solution offers maximum savings while protecting against frozen pipes.
Conserving energy during the winter months while staying cozy indoors can be tricky, but we have thermostat recommendations for when you’re home to make sure you stay comfortable and avoid high bills!

Make sure your water heater runs properly
Your water heater is more important now than any other time of the year, so this is the perfect time to make sure it is running optimally. A professional plumber can service the unit by checking the tank's sacrificial anode rod and making any repairs or replacements necessary due to wear or corrosion.
When it comes time to adjust the heater's water temperature, don't set the dial above 125 degrees F. This will prevent scalding water as well as reduce energy waste.

Don’t clog kitchen drains and be careful with the disposal
The holidays inspire some of the largest meals you'll prepare during the year, so how you dispose of cooking-related messes, leftovers, and table scraps can significantly impact your plumbing system.
For example, fats or oils accumulate while preparing many meals, but these leftovers should NEVER be poured down your drain as they can congeal and clog pipes. Instead, allow grease to congeal in the cooking dish and then scrape it into the trash.
In terms of your garbage disposal, it is best to turn it on first and then add the food debris. After the machine has done its work, shut it off and run plenty of water down the drain to clear the system for the next time you need it.
Do not put cooking grease and oils down the drain. Grease and oil are more likely to collect and clog when your plumbing is colder. Also try to not put hard to grind objects or stringy substances down into the disposal. Rice (cooked or uncooked) is also a No-No, as it will expand inside of the drain creating a blockage. Always run cold water through the disposal for at least 15 seconds before and after each use and be sure to turn on the disposal before filling it with food debris.

Consider installing insulation
Preventing frozen pipes can be as simple as a little planning and installing foam insulation. Insulating foam sheaths are sold at most hardware stores in a variety of sizes and are easy to install. Make sure to insulate the entire length of pipe from the point where your home’s main water line emerges from the ground to the point where it enters the heated space of your home. You should also insulate any pipes that are outside the heated portion of your home, like those in attics, unheated basements and outdoor hose bibbs. If pipe insulation is not a DIY job for your home, call a licensed plumber.

Hire right the first time
Your home is typically one of the biggest, most important purchases you can make - the result of a painstaking search that might have taken months or even years. Therefore, when it comes to home maintenance - from air conditioner repairs to plumbing maintenance - it only makes sense to hire someone who is qualified and will do the job well. Direct Energy offers the following tips for finding the right technician to make repairs to your prized possession:
Hire a technician from a well-known, reputable organization such as Direct Energy.
Make sure the technician is licensed and insured.
Use a technician who will provide an upfront explanation of the entire repair process.
Ensure you have an itemized work order that shows exactly what is going to be done and how much it will cost - in advance!

🌼SPRING PLUMBING TIPS🌼
Replace Filters & Drains
Drain filters should be replaced once a year to keep your drains running fast and clean. The last thing you need is a clogged kitchen sink, bathroom basin, or shower.
Be remembered/Not forgotten:
Even though we will all be remembered by family and friends when we leave this world, how many will be remembered for making exceptional changes in someone’s life while we are here. Always strive to be the positive change in someone or something.
BE EXCEPTIONAL!!!!!! (My thought for the day)

🌼SPRING PLUMBING TIPS🌼
Check Toilets For Leaks
If your toilet is not flushing correctly, you may need to hold the lever down to make it work. Though you may have gotten used to that, you will save water (and money) by replacing parts. Look for water leaks around the base of the toilet, as these can lead to structural damage or even toxic mold growth. The seal can be replaced to stop the leak. Check each toilet for obvious cracks.

Clean Shower Head
The minerals in water cause buildup, filling the holes in a showerhead or around the taps on your sinks and basins. The best method to remove the buildup is an old standard: white vinegar. For the shower head, take a plastic bag, fill it with white vinegar, and place it over the shower head, secured with rubber bands. Leave it for a full day, and then remove it. The mineral deposits will be gone, and your shower will function right. For taps, let the white vinegar soak the area, and scrub off the mineral deposits. It may require several applications.

Check Water Supply Taps
Turn each water supply tap (for toilets, sinks, basins) on and off several times so they are easy to move and do not become rigidly stuck in place. Do the same with your main water supply valve. This is one of the easiest plumbing tips for spring, but possibly the most important. What if your toilet is overflowing and you can’t turn the water supply off? Keep those taps moving easily to protect your home.

Check for Leaky Pipes
Your pipes can develop leaks over the winter months. Take a tour of your home, looking at every visible pipe, checking for drips, condensation, and leaks. As water drips and travels into the floor, walls, and foundation, your property can suffer damage that will be very expensive to repair. Do your check once a year in springtime. If you notice a leak in the spring, or any other time, don’t wait to get it resolved, as each day can lead to more damage.
