This week’s #HealthCareHeroes are the behind-the-scenes technicians who maintain and repair approximately 8,000 medical devices, from IV pumps to CT scanners, across our two hospital campuses and 14 outpatient clinics. “This career field creates a unique opportunity for people with a broad range of electromechanical skills to apply these abilities over a wide range of device types and systems,” said Chris Reilly, certified biomedical equipment tech. “Medical device technologies are constantly and rapidly evolving, presenting us with work that is challenging and interesting.” The Clinical Engineering Department is made up of biomed technicians Chris Reilly, Jason Skinner, Socorro Chavez, Gage Becker, Robert Adams, Kiya Guseman and manager Jay Norby. To do their jobs effectively, each needs an understanding of clinical (or bedside) needs and the devices required to care for patients. COVID has meant working on equipment that has either been potentially exposed to the virus or located in a quarantined room. Like all hospital employees, they’ve had to double-down on infection protocols to keep themselves and others safe. “We are HealthCare Heroes because of the degree to which we take care of our customers – the nurses, doctors and other caregivers at a patient’s bedside,” said Jay Norby. “Whether it’s assisting a fellow biomedic tech with an unusual problem or coming in at night or weekends to repair a critical piece of equipment, Thank you, Clinical Engineering, for keeping us up and running! #AllInThisTogether #JimmyKimmelLive #HealthCareHero

#ThrowbackThursday #TBT More than 100 years ago, Casper's first and only community hospital opened its doors at same corner of Conwell and Second streets that Wyoming Medical Center still occupies. On Oct. 1, we marked another important milestone in our long history by partnering with Banner Health. To put this milestone in perspective, we're throwing way back this week to before a hospital was even a twinkle in Casper's eye. Check out this dedicated crew of #HealthCareHeroes, the 22 security officers and supervisors who protect everyone inside Wyoming Medical Center – and beyond. “Along with what you may see us do day to day, security officers patrol all WMC clinics and campuses, round on patients and one-on-one patient sitters, greet and escort patients coming to WMC via helicopter and much more,” said David E. Hulshizer, director of security. “Most importantly, we are here for our patients, staff and visitors and always look for ways to help.” COVID has forced everyone in the hospital to adjust to new restrictions, safety protocols, patient surges and staffing challenges, some of which can be emotionally trying. Security has stepped up whenever and wherever called. “We are heroes because we go above and beyond to ensure the safety and security of our staff, patients and visitors. We lend a helping hand to all that ask and solve problems when they arise,” David said. “Our officers truly care about WMC and all who come here. Like so many other teams, security helps WMC nurses and physicians focus on caring for our patients.” Thank you, #TeamSecurity, for all you do for patients and families. #AllInThisTogether #JimmyKimmelLive #HealthCareHero

This week’s #HealthCareHeroes is our 12-member Employee Services team who head up all of the human resources and education functions at Wyoming Medical Center. That includes hiring and onboarding new employees, administering paychecks, managing leave and benefits, and so many other essential functions to managing the second largest workforce in Natrona County. Employee Services also oversees policy enforcement ensuring all 1,200+ employees are compliant with WMC policies, state and federal laws. The educators lead training and development programs to make sure employees meet the required educational standards, credentialing, and job competencies of their respective roles. “The COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to provide our HR and Education services in new and creative ways,” said Jeremy Smith, HR manager. “With the challenges caused by the pandemic, we have had to augment, amend and sometimes create new policies in order to comply with COVID restrictions and implement new measures to help make the work environment as safe as possible for our employees, patients and visitors.” Employee Services says that while they reserve the title of #HealthCareHeroes for frontline clinical staff, “We are proud to support our heroes who support our community!” #AllInThisTogether #HealthCareHero

A special message from the Wyoming Medical Center volunteers, to all our hardworking #HealthCareHeroes.
This week’s #HealthCareHeroes are the unstoppable members of the Acute Therapies team. This includes 12 physical therapists, 10 occupational therapists and 4 speech therapists. “As a group, our therapy team collectively works to help patients regain function to work towards their highest level of independence,” said Connie Thompson, therapies manager. “The therapists create a customized plan for each patient to get them to their highest functional level so they can either discharge home safely or advance to other rehabilitation facilities and services. We work collaboratively with medical and ancillary staff to develop an appropriate discharge plan for our patients.” At the start of the pandemic, the therapies team had to reevaluate how to treat COVID patients because they could not tolerate a high level of activity and were under strict isolation precautions. Patients were often also emotionally distressed and required more encouragement and support through their therapeutic sessions. “As a department, we had to redistribute our caseload and communicate between disciplines to allow therapists nearly double the time typically used to safely treat this population,” Connie said. “Acute Therapies is an integral part in the functional recovery of patients in our hospital and plays a pivotal role in assisting to work to decrease the overall length of stay of many of these patients. They are a vital service within the organization and coordinate closely with nursing staff, physicians and many other ancillary personnel to help support a comprehensive medical treatment plan for each patient in the hospital. They have been instrumental with the Covid patients and really stepped up to take the time to work with this population to provide the care needed to help them recover.” Thank you all for your continued commitment to patient care and recovery! #BannerStrong #CasperVCovid #CasperStrong #Therapies
