Fall sports don’t necessarily look the same in 2020, but shin splits are still a common, painful issue for adults and children alike. Congratulations to Dr. Brian Bear as he was recently invited to participate in a national research initiative for Dupuytren’s disease, a type of hand deformity. Dupuytren’s disease is a hand condition that causes tissue to thicken under the skin and pull the fingers inward toward the palm. Joining a select, invite-only group of more than 20 national hand surgeons, Dr. Bear will provide expert input on the appropriate use of treatment options for patients with Dupuytren’s disease, which can interfere with hand function and make everyday activities difficult. The research uses the Delphi method, where a panel of experts will respond to – and researchers will analyze – the collective survey responses. The survey will be disseminated among the panelists for three successive rounds of consensus-building refinements. Dr. Bear's practice at OrthoIllinois focuses on shoulder, elbow, hand, microvascular, traumatic and reconstructive surgery.

We had a great day demoing our new Avail Medsystems technology for our team members and media today! The system allows for livestreaming from our OrthoIllinois Surgery Center for educational and collaborative purposes. Dr. Scott Trenhaile performed a minimally invasive rotator cuff repair surgery today, and Dr. Geoffrey Van Thiel manned a laptop connected to a large projector screen at our clinic. There are visual and audio capabilities that facilitate communication and interaction in real time during the procedure. The technology is HIPAA-compliant and does not have video recording capabilities. Launching this system has been especially beneficial during the COVID-19 pandemic. Previously, OrthoIllinois regularly hosted visiting surgeons to learn about different techniques and equipment. This allows the same interactions to happen in a safe environment minus the travel and scheduling requirements.
