Dear Stony Brook University community,
As our community and nation reckon with the rioting and chaos that besieged the United States Capitol Building yesterday, we are naturally experiencing a combination of shock, fear, disgust, and anger. Instead of a day intended to mark the peaceful transfer of power, we witnessed a day when the United States Capitol was violently assaulted and civic duty halted. Like many of you, I watched in horror as the symbolic heart of democracy was attacked by a hatred and rage that is antithetical to what we aspire to be as a nation.
And like you, I’m searching to put this in context. As a historian of the Civil War period, I know that no such insurrection has ever before occurred at the Capitol Building, even when our country was at war with itself. In fact, the nation has experienced no such attack since the British burned the unfinished Capitol in the War of 1812. Since then, the Capitol has stood as a powerful symbol of America’s democratic institutions. How do we heal as a nation in the face of the latest assault on our core values?
I believe that as scholars and members of a university community, we have a profound role to play going forward. American higher education has always served as a means to educate informed citizens who will go on to lead productive lives and participate in their own self-governance. That historic role leads me to the certainty that we have it in our power, as a community, to reassert and fight for the values of our democracy. We must be a place of healing and unity, and an institution that reinforces our nation’s most cherished ideals, including equality, justice, freedom of expression, peaceful dissent, and lawful participation in the workings of our government.
Never has it been more important to protect and cherish these principles on our campus, where care, respect, and civility must guide our interactions with each other. Never have our expertise and scholarship been more needed to inform how our country can solve our greatest challenges, including the pandemic, economic threats, systemic racial injustice and social inequality, climate change, and the partisan divisiveness that has badly frayed the fabric of our national identity and challenged our democracy.
We must dedicate ourselves to the work of sustaining democracy. It’s going to take all of us at Stony Brook — every faculty and staff member, every clinician and student — to support each other in this challenging time, to live up to our mission, and remember that our community has the power to unite, heal, and lead the way to a stronger future. As a country, we are at a moment of profound questioning: Who are we as a nation and a people, in what do we believe, and what do we want our shared future to be? Yesterday’s events remind us of how precious and precarious democracy and freedom can be, and how important it is to work to preserve them. We as a community have the power to work together and recommit to Abraham Lincoln’s exhortation that this nation “shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

"Every day when I leave the hospital and drive home, I look up at the bright blue sky, and I cry thinking about what I just left behind. I hate leaving work because help is always needed. My job is to transport patients throughout the hospital. This didn’t change when COVID hit, but my life certainly did. The number of patients we move on a given day has grown tremendously, and we now need to put on proper PPE before we can even be with a patient. But the biggest change of all is not being able to interact with patients the way we used to. Moving with patients from point a to point b allowed us to talk to them. This is our way of getting to know them and providing comfort. But patients with COVID have a hard time breathing and are often hooked up to oxygen, so they can’t really talk. That doesn’t stop us from doing what we do, but it’s different. I still talk to patients and have them nod or give a thumbs up. I will always do anything I can to provide comfort. I even visit patients during my breaks on occasion because it can be lonely for them, and sometimes you just need somebody to talk to.
The pandemic has really made clear we are all a team at the hospital. We in transport help the nurses as much as we can - especially right now. But it’s not easy. I am exhausted. According to my watch, I walk about eight miles per day within hospital walls. But I have to say, I have never been more proud to have a job than this one at Stony Brook."

"As a Palliative Care physician, I care for patients with serious illnesses and those nearing end-of-life. The job of the Palliative Care Team is to support patients and their families and bring them together during a very difficult time. COVID has made this rather difficult, so we had to adapt and get creative. We’ve had to figure out a way to enable families to grieve and be with their loved ones. We have utilized technology like iPads and video chatting, which was challenging and didn’t feel natural at first, but we have adapted. And this wasn’t the only challenge we faced. We’ve had a tremendous increase in the number of patients we were supporting, and our consult volume across the hospital went up about 40 percent. We are working to our max, while at the same time sacrificing the time spent with our own families.
We’ve made a lot of headway in terms of how to deal with this pandemic, however, we are still in it. We are still seeing a rise in cases. I urge people to not underestimate or minimize the reality of what’s happening here. We are continuing to work as hard as we have been since the pandemic first hit. It’s real. It’s here. And we can address this together if we all continue to wear our masks, maintain social distance, and avoid large gatherings. Respect your life. Respect others’ lives. "Life is for learning. And even the most challenging events offer opportunities to learn. In fact, they probably offer the greatest opportunities to learn. So it has been with the coronavirus pandemic. Even in the midst of this difficult time in our history, Stony Brook Medicine has learned much about who we are, and who we serve. During Black History Month in February, it seems especially appropriate and fitting that our outreach to the community at large has extended well beyond our four walls, in a renewed reminder of our core mission to serve all our constituencies effectively and equitably."

"It’s been obstacle after obstacle but at the same time it’s been really empowering to see peoples’ resilience and how we’ve been able to adapt to all types of situations throughout the year. We’ve all adapted to this new norm of being overwhelmed. We are stretched so thin. We’ve all been pulled from our normal roles, which some days is harder than others, but we’re doing the best we can. Sometimes you’re juggling three roles at the same time, but it’s comforting to know that you’re helping and it’s for the greater good. I’m grateful to have the opportunity to do anything I can to help move forward and get past this together."

“I work with patients at the Stony Brook Cancer Center who come in for doctor visits and outpatient procedures. I stay with these patients throughout their visit: including before, during and after procedures. I was originally inspired to work in this setting because of my own family experiences. I want to provide the same compassionate care that my family members received during one of the most challenging times in their lives. I want to be the person to make other peoples’ experiences better, and provide them with some hope and relief. I am fortunate to work in a position where I have time to focus on a patient's emotional well being, as well as medical ailments.
I love working at Stony Brook because of the common goal we all share: to make sure every patient has the best experience and outcome that we can possibly give them while they are in our care.”

"I find social work to be essential, particularly in the ER. An Emergency Room is a point of entry for the hospital and for a patient’s next steps in receiving care. And many socioeconomic and psychosocial issues impacting a community are first detected in an ER, such as substance abuse disorders, elder care concerns, domestic violence, housing issues, child abuse or neglect and lack of community support. As a social work leader, I am in a position to provide resources, supportive counseling, and education to individuals, groups and families; and I also assist staff in their ability to advocate for patients and families.
COVID has emphasized the need for me and others in this profession to be mindful of life’s uncertainties and the need to be kind, compassionate, and caring for others. Being a social worker can certainly be unpredictable and draining, but it’s also very rewarding. I love what I do."

"My life has changed dramatically since COVID first hit. Obviously social distancing, isolation, spending holidays exclusively with my nuclear family, things like that. But in terms of what I do here at the Hospital, I am largely involved with obtaining the PPE and supplies that are critical for taking care of our patients and keeping our staff safe.
I never expected to be working in the midst of a pandemic. It’s a tremendous challenge because the demand for supplies and resources is throughout the country now – not just Long Island and the New York area. But I do see a light at the end of the tunnel. We’re not there yet. We still have a long way to go. We’re in the midst of a second wave, but we can get there. We just have to stay the course. And to anybody who thinks this is no longer a problem, I would say: I wish I could walk you through some of the floors in the hospital, and you can tell me it’s not a problem."

"I primarily work with expectant mothers and mothers who have already delivered and have a baby in the NICU. My primary goal is to ensure that mothers have the support they need for themselves and their newborns. Essentially, we are setting both mother and baby up for success to be their best selves – together.
COVID has certainly impacted what we do here quite a bit. When we have mothers who test positive for the Coronavirus, it limits their ability to see their babies in the NICU. So, I will sometimes FaceTime them with their babies, send them pictures, and so on. Those first few days are crucial, so I do whatever I can to allow that bonding to occur – even when they can’t be in the same room. My hope is that my small efforts make a difference in the mother’s experience."

"I’m responsible for the delivery of social work services to our clinics. More specifically, I support medical teams by offering long-term geriatric care options, offering intervention in abuse and neglect of vulnerable populations, and more. I find my work to be meaningful as it makes an impact on the delivery of good medicine and measurable outcomes in peoples’ lives. I also enjoy training social work students who are the next generation of this profession. At one time in my life, I was actually studying to be a priest. Although I decided not to pursue that vocation, I still enjoyed working with and helping people. And here we are now."
