When Christopher K. Pendergast was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also called Lou Gehrig’s Disease, he was told he had three years to live. He lived 28 years instead. And what a 28 years they were. Chris, who died on Oct. 14 at age 71, went on to found the ALS Ride for Life in 1997, raising over $10 million for ALS research. The Center for ALS at Stony Brook Medicine now bears his name. And along the way, he met with everyone from U.S. Presidents to legislators to the manager of the New York Yankees. It was all part of his unending quest to help others. Learn more: https://go.stonybrookmedicine.edu/w7q

“This year’s #BlackHistoryMonth theme is Black Creativity. And the connection to our field is clear. It takes creative ways of thinking about how we deliver healthcare to ensure the most vulnerable populations receive the care they need. Take right now, for example. There is resistance among some in the black community to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Not that it’s readily available, but if it were, many feel a lack of trust. So, how do we as healthcare providers build that sense of trust in us and in the system? The solution requires creativity. We need to remain creative and malleable and maintain humility to work with populations at the greatest risk for disease and poor outcomes. The overarching theme of #Sankofa can be surmised to mean: never forget where you came from, reflect often, and learn from your mistakes. That plus creativity makes for a wonderful marriage. Reflecting on experiences as students, faculty, staff, and consumers of healthcare; practicing creativity; and expressing how we feel about black history and Sankofa. It’s the perfect blend.” -Robbye Kinkade, MPH, CHES, DrPh(c) Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, School of Health Technology and Management Advisory Board Member, SBU Black History Month Committee Stony Brook University Black History Month Programming: https://bit.ly/2Oa16Mu Stony Brook School of Health Technology and Management Black History Month Programming: https://bit.ly/3jn8Hmb
