Happy #nationlymphomaawareness day here's some information about
Lymphoma:
As you know Apollo has been diagnosed with lymphoma. Lymphoma is a very
common cancer of dogs and is one of the most common forms of cancer in
dogs that we treat here at Veterinary Specialty Care. It is not known
why certain dogs develop lymphoma. In some dogs, there is an underlying
genetic component, and in others, there are no predisposing factors
(most common). Lymphoma usually arises in the lymphoid tissues of the
body (lymph nodes, spleen and bone marrow), though lymphoma can affect
any part of the body. The most common presentation of lymphoma is the
way that Apollo presented, with enlargement of the lymph nodes. The
enlarged lymph nodes are not painful.
There are five stages of lymphoma (I - V) and these stages are based on
what areas of the body are involved with the lymphoma. With stage I
lymphoma only one single lymph node is involved, or a single lymphoid
organ. Stage II lymphoma means that the lymph nodes are enlarged on one
side of the diaphragm. With stage III lymphoma, lymph nodes on both
sides of the diaphragm are enlarged. If the liver and/or spleen are
involved this is classified as stage IV. Stage V means that the
lymphoma is in the blood or bone marrow or organs other than lymphoid
organs such as eye, skin, nervous system, gastrointestinal tract. Most
dogs present with either stage III or IV lymphoma. The above staging
system is what we utilize to determine what areas of the body are
affected by the lymphoma
There are many factors that we use when giving a prognosis for lymphoma,
such as stage, grade (High or Low Grade), immunophenotype (B or T cell)
and how the patient is feeling (substage). We usually recommend staging
tests for patients that are not feeling well, have an unusual
presentation for lymphoma (lymphoma in an uncommon location in the body)
or have significant changes in the labwork to suggest advanced disease.
We recommend flow cytometry for most patients which will provide us the
immunophenotype and sometimes give us information about the grade of
disease.
Diagnostics:
CBC/Chemistry panel/Urinalysis
Abdominal Ultrasound
Chest X-rays
Flow Cytometry

Lymphoma cancer is most common in middle-aged and older dogs, and some breeds are predisposed. Golden Retrievers, Boxer Dogs, Bullmastiffs, Basset Hounds, Saint Bernards, Scottish Terriers, Airedale Terriers, and Bulldogs all appear to be at increased risk of developing lymphoma.
If you are worried about lymphoma cancer in your dog, give us a call so that we can get you scheduled for an exam.

Reunited sisters Lola and Latte give the best kisses- what a way to ring in the new year!!
Oh deer, Christmas is here! We hope you make it rein with holiday cheer! 🎄
Merry Christmas! ❤️🎅🏼💚
Everyone loves the holidays and the gorgeous plants that come with it. There are many holiday plants that, although beautiful, dogs and cats should not be around. The most common being the Christmas tree. Beware of dogs and cats eating the needles, as they can puncture the intestinal lining. The tree oils can also cause excessive vomiting and drooling so keep an eye out for this if you have a real tree at home.
Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday season!🎅🏼
The holidays are a wonderful time to be spent with the people that mean the most to you. That may be a little bit different this year due to Covid-19. That being said, we will be closed later this week so that our staff can enjoy the holiday season. Please take a look at our holiday hours.
Happy Holidays! 🎄- AHCW Staff 💚💙
