This #FeelGoodFriday is in honor of Suzette, who's on a mission to get through her #breastcancer treatment and inspire others with humor. She's a producer and founder of NYLaughs.org, a NYC comedy nonprofit and is also sharing content on her own social media to help others heal through laughter.
Suzette also wants to use her platform to educate others on breast cancer among black women, who are 40% more likely to die than white women. Additionally, people of color experience more illness, worse outcomes, and premature death compared to white people, and also face more obstacles for care. Suzette's Instagram is an intersection of info about breast cancer, support for communities of color, and of course, humor.
Suzette says that while she is focused on getting through chemo and radiation, in addition to recently shaving her head, her main goal is "to make the path easier for anyone that comes after me." Thank you for the laughs and inspiration, Suzette!

“I never thought I’d get to call myself a long-term cancer survivor.” Meet Annie Ellis, a Patient Advisor with MSK's Patient and Family Advisory Council for Quality (PFACQ).
Annie was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2004 and experienced 2 recurrences, 3 debulking surgeries, 5 lines of treatment and participated in a Phase 1 clinical trial. An early stage breast cancer in 2010 included more surgery, radiation and physical therapy for lymphedema. Now NED (No Evidence of Disease) with both cancers, Annie recently reflected on the many treatments, surgeries, tests, scans and follow-up visits at MSK.
“I know the doctors, nurses, technicians and hospital and clinic staff are extremely caring and compassionate,” stated Ms. Ellis, “but until I joined PFACQ, I had no idea how many more brilliant professionals are also constantly hard at work behind the scenes to ensure the highest quality of patient care at MSK.” MSK's PFACQ is a group of patients and caregivers that sit on various hospital committees and projects to provide the patient and family member perspective to better improve the patient and caregiver experience at MSK.
Annie draws on her many experiences as a patient to provide peer support through MSK’s Patient to Patient Program and to bring a broad patient perspective as research advocate with NCI, FDA, ASCO and ovarian cancer organizations. She is thrilled to also use these experiences with #PFACQ assignments in the areas of patient education and clinical trials. Ellis adds, “It’s quite extraordinary how everyone I’ve been involved with really listens to the patient perspective and incorporates our collective view in their work. This is true teamwork!”
"Our goal is always to find the best treatment for every patient."
For nearly two decades, MSK has led the way in matching people who have lung cancer with the best targeted therapies for their disease.

Christmas came early for me this year!
I was originally supposed to end chemo on Christmas Eve but due to some trouble obtaining IV access we did a stronger final dose and ended 2 weeks early 🎉
Such relief to be done with this chapter of treatment and I am so grateful to have had family and friends along the journey with me- even though we had to be socially distanced. Since I couldn't have anyone with me for treatment I asked my parents to stand outside my window to wave and "keep me company" for the last few minutes of my final treatment. I put a sign in the window (in photos) as a small way to say thank you and to my surprise found strangers on the street stopped to cheer and clap. I'll never forget that moment and support from not just my parents but also strangers. Got to love NYC 💕

Melissa rang the bell in February to mark the end of her radiation treatment for breast cancer. We checked in to see how she’s doing, and she shared this awesome recent photo with us. It’s clear that she’s thriving! Melissa said after having a double mastectomy, chemotherapy, and the radiation, she’s currently in the reconstruction phase but is getting stronger every day.
When asked what she would tell that version of herself ringing the bell in February, Melissa said it would be, “You got this, girl, and never doubt yourself ever again. I am so proud of you for getting up every day and trying, even if all you were able to do was smile.”
Melissa’s future plans include finishing her nursing degree and becoming a nurse! She wants to work with cancer patients who are going through chemotherapy, as it holds a special place in her heart.
Melissa’s message to anyone else experiencing cancer is, “Remember to be kind to yourself. You will have a new normal and that’s okay. You got this!”
Help us wish Melissa the best as she works towards her nursing degree!

This spring, several of our own #MSKHealthcareHeroes were treated at MSK for COVID19. One of them was physician-scientist Dr. Yu Chen. In May, we shared a video of him being discharged from the hospital. We spoke with him recently to learn more about his experience and see how he’s been doing since.
Dr. Chen told us he was diagnosed at the peak of the first wave of the pandemic in New York City. He began feeling progressively worse and was admitted to the hospital on April 7. He knew he wanted to be treated at MSK because he knew how outstanding the nurses are and how much they care about their patients.
Dr. Chen ended up spending several days in the ICU, but was actually one of the first patients to receive convalescent plasma as part of a clinical trial at MSK. He improved very quickly within 24 hours and left the ICU three days later, then went home five days after that. He was able to begin working again from home within about a week. Dr. Chen says his colleagues were incredibly supportive throughout and rallied around his family. (Pictured here is the photo he and his two daughters sent to them to say thank you!) Luckily, he said he has no lingering effects from the disease.
Above all, Dr. Chen said, “I really want to give a special shout out to the nurses and nurse assistants. The nurses were the true front line people. They make as big if not bigger impact on the inpatient care.” We’re so happy to have Dr. Chen back at work with us!

You may remember Enver and Miranda from their MSK wedding back in August. Enver was receiving inpatient treatment for leukemia which made them realize they didn’t want to wait to get married. So Enver’s care team made magic happen on M12 in what he calls the most emotional moment of his life. It even got featured in The New York Times!
We checked in with them to see how they’re doing. Enver says that “married life is the best.” He was discharged from the hospital a week after the wedding and is currently undergoing outpatient chemotherapy. He says it’s been hard, especially because Miranda can’t be with him while he’s getting treatment due to the pandemic, but that the RNs at MSK make it as comfortable as possible and cheer him up.
When Enver has time off from chemo, he and Miranda try to make the most of their time together by going on hikes and doing things like celebrating Hanukkah. They’re looking forward to an end to the pandemic so they can celebrate their marriage with friends and family.
When asked what he would like to tell his previous self from August, Enver said, “Just listen to what your wife says. She is going to be right about almost everything in the next four months and perhaps in the future.” Very wise words! 😉

She also took part in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night event and raised over $4K with the help of family and friends.
Beatriz admits that the COVID-19 pandemic gave her a “small meltdown” at first. All of the necessary precautions were reminders of what she had just been through with her transplant, and she had been hoping 2020 would be a better year after two rough years. But then she says, “I remembered why I had chemo, why I went through the transplant procedure and why I fought so hard, and I started enjoying my time being at home. [It was a] second opportunity to appreciate what’s important.”
Next month, Beatriz will be turning 40! Her goal is to continue to prioritize her health and happiness, and adds that she couldn’t have done this without her family and friends who were there with her every step of the way. Her advice to anyone going through something similar is, “Stay positive, don’t allow cancer to define you and keep life as normal as possible.”

What You Should Know about the COVID-19 Vaccines

Year in Review: Top 10 MSK Cancer Science Breakthroughs of 2020
You may remember Enver and Miranda from their MSK wedding back in August.
