🔹The tailbone may not be the biggest bone in the body, but it can certainly cause a lot of pain! 🔹 Tailbone pain can be either traumatic (a fall) or nontraumatic (sitting in bad posture). Physical therapy can be an effective way to manage your tailbone pain! Here are some things your physical therapist at AtlantaPT may do to help: 🔹Realignment of the coccyx, SI joint, and pelvis 🔹Mobilizations to the tailbone that can be either internal and/or external 🔹Manual therapy 🔹Stretches (like the one in this picture) to relax the pelvic floor, hip muscles, and back muscles 🔹Exercises for surrounding structures 🔹Pain relief strategies including cushions for sitting and use of ice or heat 🔹Restore bowel and bladder health 💫Note: While all physical therapists know what the tailbone is, it is important to find someone that is experienced in treating the coccyx both internally and externally! Be sure to find a PT that you feel you can be open and candid with. And while not required for pain relief, internal treatment to the coccyx and surrounding pelvic floor muscles can often make a huge difference in your pain. 📧info@atlantapt.com 📲770.989.1405

So the bottom of your foot hurts when you walk and someone told you that you might have plantar fasciitis. Now what?! 🔹🔷🔹 The plantar fascia is a thick tissue on the bottom of your foot that provides support. When it becomes irritated or inflamed, the term used to describe it is plantar fasciitis. 🔹🔷🔹 Good news! Physical therapy can help. Exercise can greatly reduce your pain and even make it go away completely. One possible cause of your pain can be a tight calf muscle pulling on your foot. Try the pictured calf stretch for relief 🔹1 minute hold 🔹3 times per day 🔹1 week You should notice your pain level improves within a couple days. If your pain doesn’t change, you should get a PT evaluation and have a more individualized plan of care created for you. We love to help! Thanks Pete Kane for the update! We are so proud of Sarah! Pete Kane March 7 at 7:43 AM · I wanted to thank everyone who has prayed for Sarah and encouraged her in the recovery. My heart is overwhelmed with love, that we received. So much financial support, prayers and help with the kids. It was a stock to us to learn our 33 year healthy daughter had a stroke. Very difficult to deal with during covid as no one could visit her. However God is good and has interceded in the most incredible way. The community of support has blown my mind (in a good way😃). I thank each and every one of you. So I wanted to update you on her progress. She is doing really well and getting better every day. Even though we don’t know what caused the stroke we pray that the answer will come in time. A hugh thanks to @atlantapt at Mari Smith for reaching out and providing her practice and time to help Sarah recover. You’re awesome Mari. So thank you so much for every person who has prayed, helped and supported Sarah and their family. You will never know how much that means to us.

🔷Carpal Tunnel Syndrome🔷 If you have numbness, tingling, and itching in your hand and fingers, you may be experiencing symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. The Carpal Tunnel is a narrow passage in your wrist that the Median nerve passes through. Sometimes tissues around your wrist can get tight which puts excessive pressure on the Median nerve. Symptoms can even radiate up the arm and cause weakness in the hand. Doing repetitive work with your hands can increase your chances of developing these issues. This can include many types of activities ranging from typing on the computer to working in construction. Taking frequent breaks from these repetitive tasks and being mindful of your posture and workplace ergonomics can help to reduce these symptoms. The following exercises and stretches are great ways to loosen the tissues that are putting pressure on the Median nerve in the Carpal Tunnel which can reduce the symptoms you are experiencing. 🔹Wrist circles: 20 in each direction. 3x day. 🔹Wrist flexor stretch: 3 x 30 seconds, 3x day. 🔹Wrist extensor stretch: 3 x 30 seconds, 3x day. 💫If you are experiencing significant weakness in your hand or your symptoms are not improving after a few days, you should schedule a medical consult for a full evaluation and assessment. 📧info@atlantapt.com 📲770.989.1405 #carpaltunnel #wristpain #handpain #wellness #pain #carpaltunnelsyndrome #atl #atlwellness #atlantapt #atlpt #atlphysicaltherapy #physicaltherapy #wriststretch #stretch #pain #workfromhome #WFH #numbness #handnumbness #handweakness
🔷Stay Hydrated! - This summer water isn’t just for swimming!🔷 Drinking adequate amounts of water can help your body operate better. Water can help you maintain healthy tissue and joints! It can also help reduce headaches, improve energy levels, improve sleep patterns, and improve bowel and bladder health! How much water should I drink?? 🔹Try for half of your body weight in ounces 🔹or 6-8 cups of water a day Tips!: 🔹 Spread your water intake out instead of chugging it all at once to prevent spending your day running to the bathroom 🔹You may have to pee more the first few days but your body will adapt 🔹Artificial flavors, sweeteners, carbonation can be a bladder irritant so avoid too much of these in your water 🔹Increase water intake if you are exercising, in high heat, or sweating a lot. #hydration #water #drink #beach #chronicpain #pain #physicaltherapy #pt #atlantapt
🔷Pelvic Floor Dry Needling🔷 Did you know there are 3️⃣6️⃣ muscles that connect in and around the pelvis? 💫 Dry needling for pelvic pain can include the muscles of the pelvic floor, hips, groin, abdomen, and low back. These muscles can all play a unique role in contributing to pelvic pain and dysfunction. 💫Dry needling the pelvic floor is an extremely specialized and effective way to address stubborn trigger points, decrease pain, and improve muscle function. This can be especially helpful for muscles that make up the pelvic floor, as they are notoriously hard to access and treat. In conjunction with other therapeutic treatments, dry needling is a direct, effective, and efficient technique. 💫Do you have chronic pelvic pain that doesn’t ever seem to go away? 💫What is your Iliotibial Band (IT Band): It is a dense fascia (connective tissue) that is extends from outside of the pelvis to lateral knee. Unlike the muscle, it does not have any contractile components which means it cannot be stretched. Its purpose is to help stability the knee during running along with the dynamic hip stabilizers, glute max and med. Where does it hurt? 🔷Two common sites of pain are at the lateral hip or lateral knee. At the hip, you may experience difficulty or have pain with stairs, standing on one leg, or even lying on the affected side. At the knee you may feel pain as you extend your knee from a flexed position with walking or running. 🔷Controversial Thought: The pain is not coming from your IT band but the surrounding muscle tissue from overuse, overactivation, or inhibition. Below are pictures of muscles with referral patterns similar IT band syndrome. 🔷Try these exercises to find relief? - Foam rolling and myofascial release using a tennis ball. Finding areas of pain in the muscle tissue and applying pressure 2-3 minutes per region. - Stabilizing exercise for hip and knee control. Picture 1: Foam Rolling the TFL 1) Lie on the foam on your side support by arms 2) For more support place unaffected leg over the side you foam rolling in a figure four 3) Roll until you find an area of pain. 4) Sustain pressure for 2-3 minutes before moving to another area of pain Picture 2: Foam Rolling Vastus Lateralis 1) This muscle sits in front, behind, and underneath the IT band. 2) Lie on the foam on your side support by arms 3) For more support place unaffected leg over the side you foam rolling in a figure four 4) Roll until you find an area of pain. 5) Sustain pressure for 2-3 minutes before moving to another area of pain 💫Picture 3: Modified Side Plank 1) Lie on side 2) Place elbow directly under shoulder and bend knees slightly forward 3) Stack knees, ankles, and feet 4) Inhale to prepare 5) Exhale pressing into elbow and outside of knee that’s on floor 6) Hold for 10 seconds; repeat 4-5x on each side
Last Month we told you to get outside and exercise to improve your constipation, but this month you can’t even walk from your car to the store without ending up in a pollen filled haze! Here are some ways to keep moving outside with seasonal allergies. 🔹🔷🔹 1. Time of Day- Pollen counts can fluctuate throughout the day, usually starting low, peaking at midday and slowly falling through the afternoon into night. Morning is best because dew keeps pollen at bay. 2. Weather- It’s best to exercise directly after a rainstorm when pollen counts are lowest 3. Know which pollens you are allergic to to avoid days with high counts of these specific pollens 4. Rinse your body, nose, and clothes following exercise outside. Consider rinsing pesky stragglers out of your nose with a saline solution 5. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from airborne pollen 6. Consider an app with a pollen tracker to avoid bad pollen days like Weather Channel App 7. Less intense exercise can help make outdoor exercise more tolerable 8. Beware of increased respiratory symptoms 9. Start your allergy meds early to build them up in your system but always consult your doctor first 📲770.989.1405 📧info@atlantapt.com
