Final preparations are under way at Elkhart General Hospital for those frontline healthcare workers who will make history on Friday when they receive the COVID-19 vaccine. This is a behind-the-scenes look at volunteers planning and practicing inside the Elkhart General vaccine clinic, one of the 50 state-designated Phase 1a sites. “It has just been emotional all week knowing we’re getting to this place where we will be moving out of the pandemic and excited for the part we’re all going to play for our community,” said Michele Destefano, Elkhart General risk manager who will be volunteering at the vaccine clinic.

After becoming eligible this week for the COVID-19 vaccine, Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson invited the media to capture his genuine excitement as he received his first dose today at the Elkhart General vaccine clinic. The mayor hopes to set an example for the minority community. "There are many people who are concerned about getting vaccinated,” Mayor Roberson said. "I don't want people to have this concern about whether or not this vaccine is going to work or it's some sort of conspiracy theory, because this is a pandemic that is affecting our entire community, and we know that vaccines are the only way out. What's important is that we do our part." Beacon released its first public message about COVID-19 one year ago today. We didn't know exactly what to expect. But we wanted to proactively assure our community, before we received our first case, that we were prepared and ready for what was to come our way.
