RWJBarnabas Health October 21 at 5:02 PM · Prior to the global outbreak of COVID-19, RWJBarnabas Health partnered with clinical colleagues in Puerto Rico to determine the best approach to caring for those affected by natural disasters and chronic medical conditions. RWJBarnabas Health’s efforts to establish community resiliency and provide support led them to join forces with the Universidad de Puerto Rico - UPR and the Puerto Rican government. Together, they strived to deliver the best healthcare possible to patients in Puerto Rico and across the world. The collaboration between Saint Barnabas Medical Center residents and University of Puerto Rico residents allowed them to gain valuable experience by learning about the other’s health care systems and resources. While their collaborative efforts are currently paused due to the pandemic, medical residents will return to the island and resume their mission as soon as they can. #LetsBeHealthyTogether

Hey, You! Heard about the new medication? It’s not a pill and it will improve both your physical and mental performance. Can you guess it? If you guessed exercise - you got it right! Exercise is now being labeled the "new medication" and Damaris Ababio, Physical Therapist Assistant at our Barnabas Health Ambulatory Care Center, is here to walk us through it. "Have you ever wondered why water left in a jar or cup develops an odor after a while but lakes, rivers and streams never do? This is because rivers, lakes and streams flow consistently and never stay still, the same applies to our bodies and brain, if we keep our body moving we will remain healthy from the inside out," Damaris explains. The current global #pandemic that we are facing has made leading a healthy lifestyle a challenge for all of us. The first step towards healthy living is to remember that the goal is not a perfect lifestyle. The goal is to live the healthiest life you can RIGHT NOW. Making this commitment to yourself is the single most important step towards feeling and looking your best. We are all individuals with unique circumstances and aspirations, so it doesn’t make sense to promote one plan to healthier living. However, the pillars of healthy living can be a guiding point for everyone. Jennifer Lau, physical therapist at the Barnabas Health Ambulatory Care Center, explains each one of these pillars and why they're so important in the journey to a healthy lifestyle. Donations are used in the playroom or at bedside to bring smiles to children while they are in the hospital. They are also given away to patients for birthdays, holidays, or to help them through a difficult procedure or hard day in the hospital. They wanted to take a moment to thank all of those who donated to SBMC. Thank you for helping us bring smiles to our patients, especially as we continue to battle the #COVID19 pandemic. Recently, in honor of Bill McKenna, Jr., his family took part in a flag raising to honor his decision to became an organ and tissue donor. Bill’s family described him as a naturally giving person. Already a registered organ donor, his wife said, “He’d be so happy that we were doing this.” They added that Bill would think that being able to give his organs, which included a heart, liver and kidneys, would be the best gift he could give anyone. It’s the family’s hope that by sharing Bill’s story, it will inspire others to discuss the option of organ donation with their loved ones and become registered organ and tissue donors. Although there have been advances in medical technology, the demand for organ, eye and tissue donation still vastly exceeds the number of donors. You can designate your desire to give the gift of life through the NJ Sharing Network by visiting: www.registerme.org/SaintBarnabas. #DonateLife #SaintBarnabasNJ #LetsBeHealthyTogether
Colon cancer is beatable and treatable, but only if caught early. Through proper colon cancer screening, like a colonoscopy, a gastroenterologist can find and remove polyps hidden in the colon before they become cancerous. Sometimes, removing polyps can prevent cancer altogether. During #ColonCancerAwarenessMonth, Saint Barnabas Medical Center, together with RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey - CINJ, unite in the fight against colon cancer by spreading awareness of the importance of colon cancer screening and encouraging our loved ones to get screened. Adults are urged to talk to their doctor about their risk factors and screening options. A regular examination schedule should begin at age 45, unless your doctor determines you should begin screening at an earlier age. Mark E. Gilder, MD, an RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group Colorectal Surgeon discusses what you need to know about colon cancer, prevention, treatment and recovery. #SaintBarnabasNJ #LetsBeHealthyTogether #LetsBeatCancerTogether

Sunday, March 14 marks the start of #DaylightSavings and clocks are turned ahead one hour. Your friends at The Burn Center at Saint Barnabas want to remind you that this is a great time to change the batteries in all smoke or carbon monoxide detectors. Check and clean them; dust causes them to malfunction; and older models have a shelf life and may need to be replaced. Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors save lives; place one on every level of your home. For added safety, the Burn Team also recommends placing a smoke detector in every bedroom, especially for children. For added protection, close bedroom doors before going to sleep to help keep out smoke and heat. Carbon monoxide detectors should be placed about 5 feet from the ground, while smoke detectors should be mounted higher on walls or ceilings. Following these simple steps can save yours and your family’s lives. For more information about fire prevention and burn safety, visit our website at www.njburncenter.com #TheBurnCenter #SaintBarnabasNJ #LetsBeHealthyTogether

Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the nation, but it is one of only a few cancers that can be prevented. #ColonCancer is beatable and treatable, but only if caught early. Through proper colon cancer screening, like a colonoscopy, a gastroenterologist can find and remove polyps hidden in the colon before they become cancerous. Sometimes, removing polyps can prevent cancer altogether. Individuals of average risk of colorectal cancer should begin regular screening at age 45. Individuals at higher risk should speak to their doctor about getting screened sooner. As part of Patient Safety Awareness Week, the Department of Quality and Standards coordinated daily education and prize drawings with a focus on safety for our colleagues, patients and their families. On Tuesday, The Infection Prevention and Control Department (IPCD) presented the most up-to-date information on mask safety and vaccination in support of herd immunity. “Do your part and get vaccinated,” said Eileen Yaney, MS, CIC, Director of ICPD. “All those who can take the vaccine, should do so as soon as possible so we can reach normalcy.” Pictured with Eileen are IPCD team members Christine Connor and Elizabeth Afriyie, MPH, CIC. On Thursday, SBMC’s Safety Coaches handed out Swedish Fish and Goldfish as a fun way to reinforce the importance of reporting a Good Catch, which will help create the culture change needed to advance and sustain an environment of zero harm. Pictured are Safety Coaches, JoLynn Reasoner, Manager, Outpatient Pathology, and Helene DeCapua, Community Coordinator, Community Health & Outreach. #PSAW2021 #LetsBeHealthyTogether #SaintBarnabasNJ

People should get a colonoscopy or other screening test recommended by their physician at age 45, or earlier if the patient is in a high-risk group or has possible symptoms.
