Needing urgent medical care can be a stressful situation for anyone. For those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or other developmental disabilities, visiting a crowded Emergency Department (ED) waiting room can easily cause sensory overload, making it difficult for these patients to function. To better accommodate them and their caregivers, Bayhealth Emergency and Trauma centers at both Kent and Sussex campuses and Bayhealth Emergency Center, Smyrna have created sensory rooms. Bayhealth has partnered with Dover and Milford Public Libraries to ensure all babies born at Bayhealth Hospital, Kent and Sussex Campuses, as well as any eligible patients of Bayhealth Pediatrics in Milford, are registered for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. The partnership is in support of Governor John Carney’s statewide expansion of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library through Delaware’s public libraries. Babies and children who are enrolled in the free Dolly Parton Imagination Library program receive one new book in the mail each month from birth until their fifth birthday. This helps families create a personal library of up to 60 books at no cost to them, with the goal of establishing a child’s early reading experience and habits.

It’s been two years since the Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus opened its doors on Friday, Feb. 5, 2019. Driven by his passion and commitment to helping our community members get back to good health, hospitalist Muhammed Syed, MD, looks back on the first days at the new hospital and the honor of admitting the first patient from the Emergency Department. That patient, a woman with gastro-intestinal bleeding, remains distinctly etched in this doctor’s mind. “It was a big day for us,” said Dr. Syed, noting that he was Apogee’s program director at the time. Choreographing the successful move from the former Milford Memorial Hospital to the new Sussex Campus was a challenge. “Everything went smoothly. It was a super transition, like a well-oiled Swiss watch. There were no hiccups. It was an amazing transition, quite an undertaking. I was so proud to be a part of it.” BAYHEALTH.ORG Bayhealth Hospitalist Remembers First Days at Sussex Campus | Bayhealth
