About

There is no higher calling,
no greater purpose than that of a caregiver.
Somehow, we’ve come to believe that caregiving
is just for some of us and not all of us.
Yet at our core, we are all made to love, to connect,
to extend ourselves in service of others.
The question is ... do we have the will to love, to do what it takes,
to risk ourselves in caring, even when the burden is great?
In times of happiness, in times of sadness -
we are that caregiver.
WHATEVER IT TAKES

You're welcome for your smile!

Today was 50's day and it was the bee's knees daddio. All the cool cats moved and grooved at the sock hop, then we reminisced with famous faces of the 50's trivia. After lunch all the hip guys and dolls made some nifty art by painting records. We finished the day at the soda shop digging on some sweet tunes and wetting our whistles on some keen milkshakes. See ya later alligator!

Some of you may already know, Bickford was founded to provide a place for Mary Bickford to live out her latter years in comfort, peace and enjoyment to the fullest extent possible. They wanted a place that still allowed Mary to be Mary as she aged and continue to have life enrichment according to things she enjoyed thru-out her life. That's part of our mission in caring for your loved one, to really enrich their lives according to each individual persons interests and needs. If this sounds like what you are looking for your loved one, give me a call, @ 815-936-9500, your new home is waiting!

The day started like any other "another glorious morning...makes me SICK!" We then proceeded to run "amuck amuck amuck" celebrating Halloween. We couldn't "smell children" through our masks, so we decided since its all "just a bunch of Hocus Pocus" anyway we would call on the "great and powerful Max" to "light the black flame candle" so the "Sanderson sisters could "put their whammy spell on us" and watch "three old witches take on the 20th century...I mean how bad can it be anyway?"
"On Halloween you get to become anything you want to be." - Ava Dellaira We decided to become foxes, and pumpkins, and queens, and native americans, and witches (because October is for witches after all). Have a safe and fun Halloween from the Bourbonnais Bickford family.

"When black cats prowl and pumpkins gleam, may luck be yours on Halloween." I think our residents are taking that seriously and looking for luck this Halloween eve!
Earlier in the year there was a run on toilet paper. We figured out a way to disguise a few extra rolls, just in case! We decided to "roll with it" and crafted some really cute fall pumpkins out of toilet paper rolls! Even our Fox OT Brittany got in on the crafting action!
Tis the season to be grateful!!! We are indeed a grateful bunch, so we created a gratitude tree, residents and BFM's can write what they are grateful for on a leaf and add to our tree. The goal is to fill the branches with gratitude, so anyone can come and add a leaf of gratitude to our tree whenever they feel grateful!
“Is there anything more important then a child? Is there another time in your life when love, care, tenderness, food, education, are more important than in childhood?” When I came across this quote my thoughts went immediately to our elder hood, which is another time when all of those things are vitally important to the wellbeing of people. These are the things we provide on a daily basis to our residents! We have openings and would love to provide these fundamental needs for you or your loved one! Call today to schedule your tour!

In honor of Election Day, our resident Jerry Bidle spoke to a group of residents about his experiences in radio and television broadcasting, and interviewing TWO former presidents, John F. Kennedy, and Richard M. Nixon. It was absolutely riveting! "Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other."-John F. Kennedy "A man is not finished when he is defeated. "On Veterans Day we honor all, who answered to a service call. Soldiers young, and soldiers old, fought for freedom, brave and bold. Some have lived, while others died, and all of them deserve our pride. We're proud of all the soldiers who, kept thinking of red, white, and blue. They fought for us and all our rights, they fought through many days, and nights. Though we may not know each name, we thank ALL veterans just the same." Day 3, Article on exploring senior housing, planning ahead, this article gives you many things to consider as you make a plan for your future. Finding and Paying for Care • If you have long-term care insurance, do you know exactly what it will pay for — and what it won’t? • Are you aware of the limits on what Medicare will pay for? • Do you know how much assisted living, memory care or skilled nursing care cost in your area? • If you need short- or long-term rehabilitation, do you know where you’ll receive it, and how much it will cost? • Have you compared the cost and value of a senior living community with the costs of staying at home or finding home health care?
Day 2 Article on exploring senior housing in regards to planning ahead, come back tomorrow for more information on this topic. Family as Caregivers • Adult children spend thousands of dollars and countless hours each year caring for aging parents. Do you want to ask that of your children? • How will becoming your caregiver change your relationship with them? • Do your adult children have families and careers of their own? How difficult will it be for them to take on caregiving responsibilities? • Have you talked with your children about becoming caregivers? Do they want to do it? And how prepared are they to do it? • If you don’t have children or other family members to take care of you, where will you get long-term support?

I have learned a great many things from our wonderful residents in my time at Bickford, but I think the most profound thing I have learned is to collect moments, not things. Today was "tourist day" and we celebrated adventures, and the memories we have created on all of our adventures. After all, we are all just tourists passing through, so take pictures, enjoy the food, take the risk, and by all means enjoy the journey!

We prepare home-style food because we want the dining experience to feel as though our residents are eating at home. We buy the best ingredients on the market and prepare food to order so that we can maximize the quality of that product. It may be Bickford Senior Living but it is our residents’ dining room - we are cooking in their home. It’s all about them wanting to come down to the dining room and enjoy a great meal. If they consume the food and enjoy the food, then I think we’ve created happiness. Chef Mark McKenzie

One of the many ways Bickford cares for its residents is by having a certified dietician complete a complimentary bi-annual review of our residents needs, taking into account their weight, height, and any special dietary needs for each person. The dietician will be in this upcoming quarter as we focus in Nutrition and Weight loss.
