As a therapist, I am trained to be an expert analyzer, listener, and guide. It can be very easy to get stuck in this mode of analysis and neglect the body and heart. What I had learned, over time, is that too much head and not enough heart had led me to be perceived as cold and unemotional.
The worst part is that I had no idea! I thought I was being open, vulnerable, and accessible to my clients, friends, and family; however, come to find out that was only true some of the time and not even close to being true compared to my perception.
I remember one time a friend had even thrown out the term “ice queen” and it completely took me by surprise. I look back on that moment now and have the utmost respect for this friend for it was this comment that set me on a journey of self-discovery and it woke me up to things that had been residing in my blind spots.
Today, while it is still not always easy, I practice compassion, self-love, vulnerability, and bravery every day. Now I don’t even recognize the woman I used to be. Transformation can be funny that way.
It has become my mission to share the tips, coping skills, and guidance with each and every one of my clients and it is my hope that they are able to glean some benefit as well.

Social anxiety disorder involves intense fear of certain social situations—especially situations that are unfamiliar or in which you feel you’ll be watched or evaluated by others.
Underlying social anxiety disorder is the fear of being scrutinized, judged, or embarrassed in public. You may be afraid that people will think badly of you or that you won’t measure up in comparison to others.
Some people experience anxiety in most social situations. For others, anxiety is connected to specific social situations, such as speaking to strangers, mingling at parties, or performing in front of an audience.
Learn the common triggers, signs & symptoms, and ways of coping with social anxiety in this video.
If you like this video, make sure to subscribe to my Youtube Channel where I will share new videos each week covering various holistic psychotherapy topics.
If you have been experiencing some of the listed signs and symptoms most of the day, nearly every day, for at least two weeks, you may be suffering from depression.
Not everyone who is depressed experiences every symptom. Some people experience only a few symptoms while others may experience many. Several persistent symptoms in addition to low mood are required for a diagnosis of major depression, but people with only a few – but distressing – symptoms may benefit from treatment of their “subsyndromal” depression. The severity and frequency of symptoms and how long they last will vary depending on the individual and his or her particular illness. Symptoms may also vary depending on the stage of the illness.
Quick Tip: No two people are affected the same way by depression and there is no “one-size-fits-all” for treatment. It may take some trial and error to find the treatment that works best for you.

Depression is one of the most common mental disorders in theU.S. Current research suggests that depression is caused by a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors.
Depression can happen at any age, but often begins in adulthood. Depression is now recognized as occurring in children and adolescents, although it sometimes presents with more prominent irritability than low mood. Many chronic mood and anxiety disorders in adults begin as high levels of anxiety in children.
Depression, especially in midlife or older adults, can co-occur with other serious medical illnesses, such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and Parkinson’s disease. These conditions are often worse when depression is present. Sometimes medications taken for these physical illnesses may cause side effects that contribute to depression. A doctor experienced in treating these complicated illnesses can help work out the best treatment strategy.
Depression, even the most severe cases, can be treated. The earlier that treatment can begin, the more effective it is. Depression is usually treated with medications, psychotherapy, or a combination of the two. If these treatments do not reduce symptoms, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and other brain stimulation therapies may be options to explore.

Emotional Boundaries are:
A set, clear line between what is me and what is not me.
Your own invisible force field that you are in charge of protect
Our way of determining our own thoughts, feelings, and needs
What we will accept from others and what we will not
Who I am, what I am responsible for and what I am not responsible for.
I am responsible for my happiness, my behavior, my choices, my feelings. I am not responsible for others happiness, other’s behaviors, other’s choices, and other’s feelings.

Not only do I understand these experiences from a professional standpoint but from a personal one as well. I remember that the most debilitating part of experiencing panic attacks was the fear of having another one which, in turn, lead to having another attack!
It. Is. A. Living. Hell!
So how do you treat panic attacks?
-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT is a talk therapy technique that focuses on the relationship between our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. When we are able to dissect these items, it then becomes easier to understand where they came from and how they persist.
-Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EDMR)
EMDR is an experiential (hands-on, interactive) technique that requires the reexperiencing of past events in order to make peace with them. While EMDR tends to be more emotionally taxing, it has an 85-90% success rate with results occurring much more quickly compared to talk therapy.
-Somatic Experiencing (SE)
Somatic Experiencing this is also an experiential technique that requires various body positions and breathing techniques that are designed to release trapped energy that is keeping us stuck.
If you are interested in any of these techniques, don’t hesitate to reach out and learn more.

Negative default programming is a term used to identify when and how negative self-talk was born and why it still persists. It is the automatic, negative thought(s) that comes up when something doesn't go our way and we either:
a) direct that negativity towards ourselves,
b) direct it towards others, or
c) both
An important point about negative default programming is that we actually have no control over it as it is a survival instinct that is inherent to the human condition. It actually functions to keep us safe and alive. The purpose of the automatic negative thought is to simply get our attention that something is wrong...that's it.
Once it's been realized, we then have the choice regarding how we want to react to it and when we are healthy we choose the positive choice.
That's how things can get better.
Surrounding yourself with things that uplift you and make you feel good about yourself helps to navigate how you choose to react to negative situations following the default negative thought when it occurs.
If you're interested in learning more about negative self-talk, make sure to check out my video on Youtube about the topic >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgRg1-c3qJ4 (Link in bio!)

Negative self-talk is the naughty, self-deprecating things that we say about ourselves to ourselves. It's the unedited version of just how awful we can be towards ourselves...and we ALL do it!
As children, we are blank slates. We are sponges to the experiences around us and we are simply soaking it all in at a rapid pace at all times. The most challenging part is that we do not have a choice of what gets absorbed and how much because the ego (sense of self) has not yet fully formed to filter these things out.
Negatives messages, or some form of them, from childhood can carry over into adulthood and oftentimes show up as the first thing to come to mind when something goes wrong, there is an inordinate amount of stress, or an experience is simply perceived as negative.

A trauma is a deeply distressing or disturbing experience that can result in physical and/or psychological injury. Traumatic events can be extraordinarily stressful and can shatter your sense of security. They often involve a threat to your life or safety but it can be any situation that leaves you feeling overwhelmed and isolated, even if it doesn’t involve physical harm. The more frightened and helpless you feel, the more likely you are to be traumatized.
Learn the causes, symptoms, risks, and results of trauma in my latest video.

Staying stuck in your head can actually be a much bigger problem than people are typically willing to admit. Further, the very nature of the problem prohibits you from reaching out and asking for help. Kept in for too long, this leads to degeneration, disease, burn out, and a host of mental health issues.

What is attachment?
Attachment is how we develop close bonds with each other
“Lasting psychological connectedness between human beings” - John Bowlby
Attachment Styles:
Secure - comfortable displaying interest and affection
Anxious - need constant reassurance and affection from their partner
Avoidant - independent, self-directed, and often uncomfortable with intimacy
Anxious-Avoidant - afraid of intimacy and commitment and lash out emotionally when anyone tries to get close to them
Your attachment style explains:
Why your close relationships have succeeded/failed

Perpetual exposure to the doom and gloom of the news can cause anxiety levels to skyrocket through the roof! What’s worse is sometimes this can happen without us even noticing it and chronic exposure to the news can even lead to an anxiety disorder! According to one analyst, “a person watching or reading the news doesn’t usually have the ability to fix any of the problems they’re seeing, so the sense that things are out of control is increased.”
Further, social media can promote feelings of inadequacy as a result of comparing yourself to others leaving you feeling anxious and depressed.
it’s important to limit your digital exposure as we are subconsciously internalizing what we are taking in and this can cause feelings of anxiety without being able to recognize why.
If you are struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I’m here for you and ready to help.

Childhood has a tremendous effect on our adult relationships and how we connect with others. Our upbringing plays a significant role in which attachment style we develop.
Continuing the attachment series, in this week's video I talk more specifically about avoidant attachment, how it develops, how it presents in adulthood, and tactical tools to start creating a healthy, secure attachment style.
You (or your partner) may have an avoidant attachment style if:
Independent, self-directed, often uncomfortable with intimacy
Use repression to manage emotions and deny their vulnerability
Complain of feeling “crowded” or “suffocated” when people try to get close to them
These are just a few indicators of avoidant attachment style. Watch my video to learn more! I'd love to hear your comments below and as always if you liked this video, hit the like button, and subscribe to this channel to receive more videos like this.
Figures such as Caitlyn Jenner and Laverne Cox (Orange is the New Black) have played a large role in catapulting the words transgender into the mainstream over the past few years. Regardless of how much the LGBT community has grown in recognition and support, there is still vast amounts of misinformation out there.
It is important to get clear on a few key issues and dispel the myths to educate the general public on not only what it means to be “trans” but what it is like to live a trans life.
Those who identify as transgender are people. Case and point. Ask many of those who identify as transgender how it came to be that they identify this way and you will likely get a similar response stating that they are simply in the wrong body. Regardless of how masculine or feminine he/she may look on the outside, it could be in stark difference from the gender they feel on the inside.
Further, there are several false beliefs about the trans community that continue to contribute to the negative stigma and non-acceptance of trans people that perpetuates violence and hate. Stay tuned to learn more about those false beliefs.

Video 3 of 5 is now live! This week we are going to talk more about the anxious attachment style.
You (or your partner) may have an anxious attachment style if:
-Think highly of others but have low self-esteem
-Strong fear of rejection or abandonment - can cause jealousy or suspicious of partners
-Clinginess in relationships - preoccupied with relationships
-Sensitive and have strong sense of others’ needs but are often insecure and anxious about their own worth in relationships
Do you relate to any of the above? These are just a few ways anxious attachment style presents itself. Keep watching to learn more! I'd love to hear your comments below and as always if you liked this video, hit the like button, and subscribe to this channel to receive more videos like this.
As Albert Camus says, “after awhile you could used to anything.”
As many of you know, I am a holistic, natural mental health practitioner focusing on the use of natural mental health remedies to treat mental illness.
While natural remedies are not a substitute for psychotropic medication for those who need it, they can often be safely used in conjunction. Further, many people enjoy a reduction in mental health symptoms without the use of psychotropic medications. (To determine which category you fall into, consult with your medical doctor first then a mental health professional).
Above are some natural, mental health techniques that you can begin practicing right away that will bring you some much needed relief from anxiety quickly. 😌

In psychotherapy, profound shame is oftentimes one of the most difficult emotions to treat as it tends to rob you from being able to think clearly and therefore, leaving you feeling stuck. This can, in turn, make the shame even worse! Here are a few ways to treat shame:
Normalize it- When you understand that shame is a natural emotion and that most people struggle with it at some point in their lives, it begins to take the sting out of experiencing it.
Talk about it- If the nature of shame causes us to run and hide it makes sense that the way to treat it is to come out of hiding. Talk about your feelings with a trusted friend, a mental health professional, or someone you trust. The more you talk about your shame, the less power it has over you.
Practice receiving and giving compassionate touch- According to Polyvagal Theory –much of our emotions are a result of what’s happening on the inside – it is through compassionate bodily touch that our nervous system begins to calm. Laying your head in your partner’s lap while he/she strokes your hair while you talk about what is shaming you or putting your hand on someone’s knee to know they are being heard are good ideas to facilitate this process.
Bring your attention out of your head and into your body- When you are experiencing feelings of shame, it is very common to get stuck in your head, get caught up in your thoughts, and it could lead to anxiety symptoms. It is suggested that you begin to touch various parts of your body (i.e. lightly touching your shoulders, legs, feet, etc) so as to direct the attention away from overthinking (the head) and allowing you to be more present in the moment. The more present we are the less room there is for overthinking.

Why are we attracted to those whom we are attracted? If we pursue partners whom we deem equally attractive to ourselves, we naturally feel more comfortable and consider that mate to be well-suited for us. If we pursue partners whom we deem to exceed our own attractiveness, this is either due to a misperception of our own attractiveness, in comparison to how others rate our attractiveness, or it is to aspire to increase our worth and value to match that of the attractive partner.
While it is in our nature to follow our instincts as it pertains to attractiveness, other higher level criteria is important when it comes to choosing a long-term mate because humans are complex animals. Having similar morals, values, common interests, and commitment to stick it out when things get difficult reach far beyond physical attractiveness. This has become increasingly more difficult as technology plays on the vulnerabilities of our neurobiology resulting in an immediate gratification society that gives up at the first sign of discomfort.
If you are looking for more than just a hook up, practice being fully in the moment. Put your phone down and talk to the person you’re in interested in face-to-face. Yes, I know it’s anxiety-inducing to actually have to practice social skills but humans are wired to connect and if we don’t, we wind up feeling more isolated, lonely, and depressed.
In today’s “hook up” culture, this may feel like going against the grain but if you’re looking for a lasting relationship, it will take getting out of your comfort zone and yes, being vulnerable.

Boundaries will differ depending on the relationship: romantic
partnerships, parent-child, employer-employee, friendships but boundary
patterns can be consistent across relationships.
People who blame others for their own emotions and actions do
so because they believe that if they put the responsibility on those around
them, they’ll receive the love they’ve always wanted and needed. If they
constantly paint themselves as a victim, eventually someone will come to
save them.
People who take the blame for other people’s emotions and actions are
always looking to save someone. They believe that if they can “fix” their
partner, then they will receive the love and appreciation they’ve always
wanted.
How to Set Healthy Emotional Boundaries:
--Communicate your thoughts with one another - say no – to tasks you don’t
want to do or don’t have time to do and say yes when you need help
--Say thank you with no apology, regret or shame.
--Delegate tasks.
--Protect your time – don’t overcommit.
--Ask for space – we all need our own time.
--Speak up if you feel uncomfortable with how someone is treating you or
your needs are being infringed upon.
--Honor what is important to you by choosing to put yourself first.
--Drop the guilt and responsibility for others.
--Share personal information gradually and in a mutual way (give and take).

Not a confident person? Here's how you fix it:
1) Recognize the areas in your life that are currently on, or can potentially be put on, autopilot. Autopilot means that this area of your life doesn't require much attention from you and that it basically runs itself. (Some examples are going to work, perhaps your relationship with your parents, paying bills).
Please note that being on autopilot, in this sense, doesn't mean that these tasks don't require any of your attention but rather that they require less of it. In this regard, you can have some confidence in recognizing that your attention isn't needed in these areas all of the time so this frees up your attention and bandwidth to focus on other things that are more deserving of your attention.
2) Identify areas in your life where you can invite discomfort for the purpose of growth. Then, select one small thing each week that scares you and/or makes you uncomfortable and do it.
This task should enable the risk of failure, being seen, practicing vulnerability, etc. One of the most important aspects of this step is to focus on something small because if we shoot too big, we're more likely to pscyh ourselves out and we wind up doing nothing or simply quitting.
Make sure that your goal focuses on the two R's: what is Realistic and Reasonable
Forgive yourself. Go slow. Practice some self-compassion.
But whatever you do, just don't give up.

Thanksgiving may be over but there are plenty of us already thinking about Christmas celebrations.
Even though you know it’s coming, you still dread it every year. Most of us, if not all, have one or several toxic relatives that we’re forced to interact with around the holidays. As much as you try to talk yourself out of feeling triggered or denying that it will bother you, the negativity creeps back in.

Just because Thanksgiving is over doesn't mean many of us are done with family engagements. Here are a few games to play in order to survive the holidays with toxic family:
Participation Observer game (either alone or with friends):
Queen for a day - arrange to meet with friends before the holidays and again after the holidays. You’ll each tell your story about your toxic family members then vote to see whose experience was the most horrendous. The one who wins is crowned queen and the others buy her lunch.
Comedy club - instead of looking to your family for love and understanding look to them for comedy material. After the holidays, meet with your friends and retell your stories. You may find a sense of lightheartedness in being able to laugh at it.
Dysfunctional Family Bingo - before the holidays, meet with friends and provide each person with a bingo card. Each person fills the card with dysfunctional phrases or actions that are likely to occur while with their families. Take your card to the family gathering and mark off each item that is fulfilled. If no one’s card is filled, the one who has the most slots filled wins.

Be sure to check out my latest video on Supporting a Grieving Loved One which you can find on my Youtube channel (link in bio) or in my IGTV library. Types of Depression:
-Persistent depressive disorder (also called dysthymia) is a depressed mood that lasts for at least two years. A person diagnosed with persistent depressive disorder may have episodes of major depression along with periods of less severe symptoms, but symptoms must last for two years to be considered persistent depressive disorder.
-Postpartum depression is much more serious than the “baby blues” (relatively mild depressive and anxiety symptoms that typically clear within two weeks after delivery) that many women experience after giving birth. Women with postpartum depression experience full-blown major depression during pregnancy or after delivery (postpartum depression). The feelings of extreme sadness, anxiety, and exhaustion that accompany postpartum depression may make it difficult for these new mothers to complete daily care activities for themselves and/or for their babies.
-Psychotic depression occurs when a person has severe depression plus some form of psychosis, such as having disturbing false fixed beliefs (delusions) or hearing or seeing upsetting things that others cannot hear or see (hallucinations). The psychotic symptoms typically have a depressive “theme,” such as delusions of guilt, poverty, or illness.
-Seasonal affective disorder is characterized by the onset of depression during the winter months, when there is less natural sunlight. This depression generally lifts during spring and summer. Winter depression, typically accompanied by social withdrawal, increased sleep, and weight gain, predictably returns every year in seasonal affective disorder.
-Bipolar Disorder is different from depression, but it is included in this list is because someone with bipolar disorder experiences episodes of extremely low moods that meet the criteria for major depression (called “bipolar depression”). But a person with bipolar disorder also experiences extreme high – euphoric or irritable – moods called “mania” or a less severe form called “hypomania.”

The truth is that all growth is painful. Some experiences of growth are more painful than others and some less so. But we keep coming back for more because of the long-term pay off also known as behavior change and breaking unhelpful patterns.
I’m convinced that the people who say that “people don’t change” are the very ones who have never experienced radical behavior change themselves. I believe that these individuals have either never desired to do the deep digging or they simply haven’t known how. Either way, this person tends to remain very stuck - repeating the same mistakes without any improvement, and they also tend to blame the world for their problems and be generally discontent.
If you keep swimming in the shallow end you never get to experience the multidimensional depths of consciousness and humanity that we’re all designed to experience.

It's not uncommon for many people to feel as though they have always lacked confidence. Some people, though not all, who lack confidence identify themselves as a "doormat person," "people pleaser," and "yes person."
Sound familiar?
People who struggle with confidence have likely had a variety of negative experiences early in life that have communicated the message that they are not good enough and this can oftentimes carry over into adulthood if left unchecked.
I can help. Check out my video on confidence to learn some helpful tips and remember:
Forgive yourself. Go slow. Practice some self-compassion.
