January 25th is Rice Crispy Treat Day. The residents of Brookdale Roanoke had fun making Rice Crispy Treats. Life with dementia can be engaging, productive, and meaningful by allowing the resident, (with supervision) to do what brings joy to them. The residents at Brookdale Roanoke dispel the myth that people with dementia cannot function and that everything has to be done for them. In early and middle-stage dementia, with given cues, gestures, and proper supervision we give an avenue to continue an active person-centered meaningful living.
People with dementia may not be able to initiate the process of painting an entire canvas but by breaking the task down step by step will help them create a beautiful painting. This concept allows people with dementia to successfully complete an activity that gives them a sense of accomplishment, meaning, and continuity of their life amid the progression of dementia disease.
