On Sept. 11, 2001, classrooms, offices, and family rooms became instilled with extra meaning and we promised each other we'd never forget. We remember the heroic acts of those we lost and how our country was reawakened to the essential importance of courage. In the days following the senseless attacks, New York, the District of Columbia, and rural Pennsylvania were filled with the smell of smoke and ash hung in the air, yet, people came together, showing compassion, kindness and love. That one day completely reshaped our lives for decades to come.
Today, we remember and honor the heroes of 9/11, those whose lives were lost, and those still today (19 years later) living in and with the aftermath of the tragic events of that day.
Suicide is a difficult topic to talk about. This week – National Suicide Prevention Week – is a time dedicated to raising awareness of suicide and how we can prevent it. It starts with a willingness to talk openly and honestly with any family member, friend or loved one who is contemplating suicide.

The arrival of the first vaccine for COVID-19 is a momentous occasion, but it will take many months for supply to catch up with demand. In the meantime, COVID-19 remains a dangerous and deadly virus. Here's an update on how he's feeling as well as some notes about the differences between the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines being administered to our caregivers across Colorado and western Kansas.
We share your excitement about the expanding number of Coloradans eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccination, including the essential workers and residents 70 and older identified in the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s updated Phase 1B. Please know we are working hard with our state and local public health partners to safely and quickly distribute the vaccine. When we have a vaccine available for you, Centura Health will contact you through your MyCenturaHealth account with specific instructions on how to make an appointment. If you don’t have a MyCenturaHealth account, we will provide instructions on how to create one once you are eligible for the vaccine. We are not currently able to provide walk-in vaccinations.

Meet Sadie Hjelmstad, our incredible Catering Coordinator. Sadie has worked at Castle Rock Adventist Hospital for more than three years, having started as a cook and then growing into the catering position. She is motivated by hearing that her catering looks and tastes good by associates throughout our hospital. Speaking of creating things that look good, Sadie was the creator of the Manna Mountain Lodge (pictured). This is truly a work of art, and her attention to detail made Nutrition Services the winner of our annual Gingerbread Contest.
Sadie says, "I love the diversity of the people. I am never bored and feel I can always grow in the position." The benefits offered by her job as well as how she feels taken care of are really important to her. Her leader, Dan Skay, says, "I can count on her. She takes the worry off my plate, and she gets things done."

School nurses receive COVID-19 vaccine as distribution widens
More than 13,000 Centura Health associates have now received their first COVID-19 vaccinations, and we recently invited more than 9,000 community partners to receive the vaccine in our hospitals, with many more to come in the weeks ahead. Here, OB nurse Robin Johnson receives her first shot at Parker Adventist Hospital. "I'm proud to say I received the Pfizer vaccine the first day it was offered," Robin says. With each dose of vaccine administered, we move closer to an end to this devastating pandemic.
We'd like to introduce you to Gloria Van Voorst, daughter of proud parents Ashley and Jordan Van Voorst of Parker. Gloria was born at 12:18 a.m. today at Castle Rock Adventist Hospital, making her Centura's very first baby of 2021. Congrats to the Van Voorst family and to all the New Year's Day babies born today!
While initial studies indicate the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are approximately 95% effective at preventing recipients from getting sick with COVID-19, it is not yet clear whether those who have been vaccinated can still be asymptomatic spreaders of the virus. For this reason, we strongly recommend everyone – including people who have received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine – continue to practice safe behaviors such as wearing a face mask, practicing social distancing, washing your hands frequently, and staying home when sick.

"Here's to Dad," Centura Health anesthesiologist Dr. Gregory Fauteux said this week as he received his second dose of COVID-19 vaccine.
Dr. Fauteux knows the devastation COVID-19 can cause; the virus took his father's life November 22. "One of the true tragedies is that there are over 350,000 people just like him - someone's father, someone's brother, someone's mother, someone's daughter, and we just need to take it seriously."
We're working day and night to get the vaccine to as many of you as possible and as quickly as possible in accordance with state guidelines for vaccine distribution. While this process plays out, it's essential that all of us continue to do the things we know stop the spread of this deadly virus: wear a face mask, social distance, practice good hand hygiene, and stay home when sick.

Emmanuel Rusaka is a problem solver by nature. He works as an IT Service Analyst for Centura Health, where he helps our associates who are having computer trouble. Recently, he decided to help solve a different kind of problem after hearing those he loves express doubt and fear about COVID-19 vaccines.
”I think the misinformation is quite great and I think that we just have to work together to eliminate that,” he said.

Therapy dogs are a familiar sight in our hospitals, given their ability to reduce stress, promote healing and provide comfort to patients and caregivers alike. Less familiar but equally therapeutic - miniature horses! Sherlock and Watson recently visited our associates at St. Anthony North Health Campus thanks to their owner, Becky Ballard, who wanted to show support for our caregivers who have proven so resilient throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. It took a few special precautions to make the visit a success, and it was well worth the effort.
This is Eliza Gadziala, a Certified Nursing Assistant on our Acute Care Unit. Eliza has worked for Castle Rock Adventist Hospital for almost two years, and she will complete her nursing degree from Colorado Christian University in May. "I like helping others, I like the team and we all support each other," Eliza says about what she likes most about her position at CRAH.
She was inspired to become a C.N.A. because of her passion to help others and through her own experience with nurses. Her leader, Jennifer Kimberlain, says this about what makes Eliza such a valuable part of the team: "It is the care she provides the patients and the care she brings to the nursing staff. Her patients adore her and compliment her regularly about the care she provides."

Emmanuel Rusaka is a problem solver by nature. He works as an IT Service Analyst for Centura Health, where he helps our associates who are having computer trouble. Recently, he decided to help solve a different kind of problem after hearing those he loves express doubt and fear about COVID-19 vaccines.
”I think the misinformation is quite great and I think that we just have to work together to eliminate that,” he said.

This is Rita Soldatke, an RN Case Manager here at Castle Rock Adventist Hospital. Rita has worked for Centura Health for five years and at CRAH for the past three. She enjoys the challenges of case management and figuring out how to meet the unique needs of all her patients. "I like being an advocate for the patient," Rita says. "We have a good team and a great leader."

When asked what motivates her to care for patients in our community, Britany says, "I love new parents and educating them as they are very impressionable." And what does she most enjoy about her job? Loving on babies and new mommies! Marianilda “Nilda” Vanderzyden, RN, has worked for Centura Health for more than 11 years and recently transferred to Castle Rock Adventist Hospital in January. Nilda says it's a privilege to regularly care for our associates, helping to support their safety and wellbeing so they can care for patients in our community.
Nilda lives Centura Health’s mission by sharing the love of Christ with those she meets and serves while working. “I love meeting new people and hearing about some of their stories,” she says. Her leader, Amelia Olson, says “Nilda has a true servant’s heart and is committed to her work and ensuring the health and wellbeing of all associates. She is committed to evidenced-based practice and helping her entire OH team be successful.” We are grateful for you, Nilda!
Johnny Cashmore needed a kidney transplant, and his wife Jessica was willing to donate one of hers. When she wasn't a match, they did the next best thing -- participated in a paired exchange in which Jessica donated her kidney to someone on the list for whom she was a match. This living donation chain is still going, with seven people having received kidneys from it.
Johnny's procedure was performed at Centura Transplant at Porter Adventist Hospital. Dr. Alex Wiseman, executive director of kidney transplant at Centura Transplant, says paired exchanges such as the one that benefitted the Cashmore family can significantly decrease the wait time for a needed transplant. "Anytime that you can see something that seems to be not a possibility, turn into a possibility, it just is truly rewarding," Dr. Wiseman says.

We know there are many more vaccinations to give in the weeks and months ahead, and we look forward to continuing this life-saving work in our communities. We're humbled and honored to be a major contributor to the new Charles J. Blackwood, MD, Endowed Memorial Scholarship to support Black and other underrepresented medical students at CU Medicine. Dr. Blackwood, a native Coloradan who in 1947 became the first African American to graduate from CU's School of Medicine, was a pioneer in every sense of the word.
"Dr. Blackwood serves as an inspiration to Black physicians throughout Colorado, and an endowment in his name to benefit scholarships for Black medical students is incredibly appropriate and long overdue." says Dr. Oswaldo Grenardo, Centura's Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer and a family medicine physician. As we reflect on the past year, we remember how our caregivers here and across our entire health system stepped up in the face of immense challenges to do what they do best - care for our patients and our communities. They extend compassion, hope and healing with every interaction, and they meet each day with courage, perseverance and kindness. While our COVID-19 response continues, we want to take a moment on this one-year anniversary to thank our caregivers for all they have done, and continue to do, for our healing ministry.

It's #TalentTuesday, and we're pleased to celebrate Megan Irons! Megan started working at Littleton Adventist Hospital in 2008 on the General/Surgical floor. She then transitioned to a Clinical Outcomes position, where she began to work in Infection Prevention and Patient Safety. In 2014, Megan moved to Parker Adventist Hospital as its infection prevention program manager. She came to Castle Rock Adventist Hospital in September 2016 as our infection prevention program manager.
“Education is power," Megan says about her role. "I try to help our caregivers with ideas to implement with their daily tasks to help protect patients and themselves.” Megan loves that every day offers something new, and she enjoys continual learning and helping frontline caregivers. Jane Braaten, our director of quality and patient safety, says Megan’s collaboration, creative ideas and humor make her such a valuable part of the team. “Megan has an expertise and knowledge base you can’t get from anyone else in the hospital,” Jane says.

Be your own advocate: Ask questions about your care, raise any safety concerns you have, and ask your caregivers to double check before they act. Write down your questions and make sure your caregivers address them.

Our caregivers are here for you no matter what, but we'd prefer you enjoy the winter weather from the comfort and safety of your home.
The health and safety of our communities is always our top priority. With a major snowstorm predicted for the Front Range beginning Friday evening and continuing through Sunday, we urge everyone to exercise extreme caution and to consider delaying or canceling any plans that involve travel outside your home. In anticipation of the storm and with the safety of our caregivers and patients in mind, we are proactively rescheduling many of our COVID-19 vaccine clinics. You will receive a separate communication from Centura Health or the vaccine clinic organizer with details if your appointment is impacted. As always, our hospitals will remain open and ready to care for you and your loved ones should the need arise this weekend. Please be safe out there!

It's #TalentTuesday, and we'd like to celebrate Susan Edmonson, one of our patient access representatives. Susan has been part of our team for the past four years, supporting Emergency Department registration. Susan enjoys helping her neighbors, patients and the greater Castle Rock community. “Society right now is me, myself and I," Susan says. "I want to make the hospital as positive and supportive as can be.” She loves the team atmosphere at Castle Rock Adventist Hospital, where she says everyone truly supports each other. Her supervisor, Amanda Arent, says Susan goes above and beyond to help others in the ED.

It takes an incredible amount of time, effort and collaboration with partners to run mass COVID-19 vaccination clinics like the ones we're setting up at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, the Colorado State Fair and the Broadmoor World Arena. These drive-up community clinics are part of Governor Jared Polis' Vaccines for All plan, and they are providing life-saving vaccinations to thousands of Coloradans each day the clinics operate. We're humbled and proud to be part of this effort. Nothing brings us greater joy than sending you home from the hospital to complete your recovery. But it's important to be prepared for your return home.
• Make certain you know what medications and/or treatments you will need once home.
• Ask what you should watch for that would require a call to your caregiver and which caregiver to call if questions come up.
• Also ask when you should schedule follow up appointments.
