Colin A. McCannel is a Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology and vitreoretinal surgeon at UCLA’s Stein Eye Institute (SEI). His clinical focus includes the management of vitreoretinal surgical conditions, particularly complex retinal detachments, macular holes, epimacular membranes (puckers), floaters, complications of diabetic retinopathy, and age related macular degeneration.
His research interests include outcomes research, endophthalmitis, epidemiology of ophthalmic disease, surgical techniques and intraocular lymphoma. He currently leads an initiative that incorporate virtual reality surgical training into the curriculum of the ophthalmology residency and vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at SEI. He lectures widely on these topics, and is known as a leader in his field.
Dr. McCannel is a member of the prestigious American Ophthalmological Society, Macula Society and Retina Society, as well as of the American Society of Retina Surgeons, Club Vit, American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the European Vitreoretinal Surgery Society. He has been a core lecturer at the European Vitreoretinal Trainnig School for the past 10 years. He received a bachelor degree summa cum laude in biology from the California State University, Northridge, and graduated from Mayo Medical School. He completed his ophthalmology residency training, and two-year retina fellowship at SEI. His fellowship was followed by over 10 years as a staff vitreoretinal surgeon at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN before joining the faculty of the Stein Eye Institute in 2008.
Clinical Interests: Surgical and Medical Diseases of the Retina, Macula and Vitreous, including diabetic retinopathy, macular hole, retinal detachment, complex retinal detachment, epimacular membrane (epiretinal membrane, macular pucker), age related macular degeneration.
