Individuals with limited or no language abilities often have trouble communicating with others. URS: United Rehabilitation Services’ Empowerment Drumming program is helping those individuals strengthen their communication skills through music. A $5K Greenlight Grant from the Phil Rizzo Fund for Students in the Miami Valley and The Robert and Jean Penny Endowment Fund of The Dayton Foundation helped URS purchase drum kits and provide staff training to help facilitate this program, which helps children and adults with disabilities interact with others and build confidence.

Women shouldn’t have to choose between groceries and feminine hygiene products!
In less than two years, Femme Aid Collaborative has been able to collect and distribute more than 650,000 menstrual hygiene items, with the aim of ending period poverty in Montgomery County. Due to the negative financial impact that COVID-19 has had on all of us, private donations that fund Femme Aid’s work have slowed.
With the help of a $10K grant from the COVID-19 Response Fund for Greater Dayton, Femme Aid is able to continue its work by providing feminine hygiene products to nonprofits that are helping women in need.
In honor of #InternationalDayoftheGirl we want to show our thanks to these awesome young women who are supporting our community!

In 1942, the Carillon Bell Tower, the largest musical instrument in Ohio, was built in Dayton. The tower was built at the request of American engineer and prominent community leader, Edward A. Deeds and his wife, Edith.
Fun Fact: More than 40 years after the tower was built and the park was named a historical landmark, Carillon Park became a supporting organization of The Dayton Foundation through the Carillon Trust Fund.

All aboard as we enter into the next decade of The Dayton Foundation’s history – the 1940s!
After The Great Depression, the next decade was consumed by war. To combat the effects of many of the men leaving home to serve our country, women were welcomed into the workforce. But it also created a dilemma – where would the kids go after school?
The Dayton Foundation stepped in by awarding grants to the “Day Gang” afterschool program.
