Early Warning Signs
Signs of slipping
Experience Difficulty Communication:
Problems with language can occur in all forms of dementia and can be one of the first symptoms that are noticed. At first, a client may carry on normal conversations but simply forget a word, or they may have difficulty resuming the conversation after being interrupted. With the progression of cognitive decline, you may notice difficulty with your client losing their train of thought, expressing fragmented thoughts or logically organizing their words. Communication goes beyond speaking, so you might witness a client whose body language and nonverbal communication increases because speech for them is difficult. Dementia can affect a client's ability to understand what may have been said to them and for them to deliver an appropriate response. This can be upsetting and frustrating for them and those around them.
Next Step:
If you have a client or family member that shows these Signs of Slipping, remember that Elder Bridge is an expert at helping to manage and care for those with cognitive challenges. Your observations may be the beginning to make appropriate arrangements to ensure the safety and happiness of the individual and family.
