Mr. Thomas Hearn has just completed his rehabilitation journey and is celebrating his independence with a stroll down the hallway. He is excited to be able to walk again, which was the main reason he came to our hospital. Before therapy, Mr. Hearn would walk one to two miles a day. He has really enjoyed our hospital and says the therapy staff was very patient with him. Pictured with him is Physical Therapist Jeremy Strief, who has helped him achieve his goals.
It’s National Rehabilitation Awareness Week and our patients are celebrating by painting birdhouses as a part of the Discover the Possibilities theme.
Mr. Jackie Dodson arrived at Encompass Health on Sept. 8 after having surgery on his hip. The main reason for his decision to come to our hospital is so that he can help his wife at home. Jackie said he loves the therapy staff and they have become like to family to him, always very respectful and helpful. Veronica Brown was sent to Encompass Health after a month on a ventilator battling COVID-19. However, after arriving, her limited mobility prompted her doctor to send her back to the hospital for neurological testing. The testing revealed a new, post-COVID-19 diagnosis for Brown, Guillain-Barre syndrome, an inflammatory disorder of the nerves that may cause temporary paralysis and is often triggered by a viral infection. We had such a great time at this year’s tree decorating celebration. Patients and staff members were able to participate and help decorate our Christmas tree. We played holiday music and enjoyed some fresh popcorn. The patients enjoyed this so much because it reminded them of being at home with their families, and we are so glad that we can help them feel merrier during this holiday season.

We had elves from every department scurrying around with their art supplies decorating doors throughout the second and third floors of our facility. We are amazed at the creativity among our great staff and we appreciate them taking time to decorate a door for patients and employees to enjoy. Comment below on who you think had the best door!
This week we hosted gingerbread house stations for patients in our therapy gym. They were able to enjoy a hands-on kit that was great holiday fun for everyone. We are glad to see our patients getting into the holiday spirit!
We decided to open a holiday store for our patients during the week of Christmas. Patients were able to pick out gifts for their loved ones since they are unable to actually go shopping. We asked employees to donate small gifts for our patients to shop at no cost to them. We really wanted to make this season special for patients who will be in our hospital during the holidays.
To bring some festivity to our halls, our hospital hosted a door decorating contest. Our patients and employees each got one vote for their favorite door. The winning doors were announced at our hot cocoa and cookies celebration. The third place winners are the pharmacy team with “The Meaning of Christmas.” The second place winners are the case management team with “Who-Ville.” The first place winners are Muriel Osburn, Cheryl Ottman, Mary Beth Jackson and Edwina Smithezem with “Snowman” door. The winners received a trophy and bragging rights for the entire year! Congratulations to the winners, and thanks to everyone for participating!
Our Secret Santa gift exchange was so much fun! Everyone was so excited to receive their gifts from their Secret Santa. We exchanged gifts during our employee holiday lunch catered by Fallon's Gourmet of Gulfport.
