When rehabilitation after knee replacement surgery wasn't going as it should, see how Lisa Sprague's occupational therapist helped her identify a surprising underlying condition.
“I was scared; I was relieved; there was so much going on in my mind,” Sprague said. “If I wouldn’t have gone to Encompass, I’d probably still be getting shots in my back for pain and wouldn’t be on the medicine I’m on to stop the progression of it. I thank God that I got in there, and they got answers, and I got the right treatment.”

Grant Drummond – You are an Ironman and you will be again!
Grant Drummond finishes what he starts! As a matter of fact, he has completed 8 Ironman events.
He was out training for his 9th Ironman event with his sister, Gwen Steves, when he was hit by a distracted driver. He has spent over 100 days in various hospitals before being transferred to Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Colorado Springs on October 9th. Gina, Grant’s wife, had just one request. She wanted our staff to teach her everything she needed to know to take Grant home.
Grant needed a spark and as a former Ironman competitor, CEO Steve Schaefer knew exactly who to call – the “Voice of Ironman” - Mike Reilly After hearing Grant’s story, Mike could not wait to get involved and gave Grant a pep talk via Facetime. There is no doubt that Grant was listening to Mike’s inspirational message.
Gina, Grant’s wife, commented that she could not be more thankful for the staff at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Colorado Springs.

Encompass Health Colorado Springs would like to give a big thank you to Jesse Rivera, director of community relations for Springs Ranch Memory Care Community, and the team there for bringing a cupcake truck to support our hospital employees this week. What a sweet treat!
Stephen Ramsey has been in hospitals and other facilities since May and had not seen his wife since June 19. It is hard enough dealing with difficult health issues, but even harder when you cannot see your wife. COVID-19 visitor restrictions kept the Ramsey’s from being together. They have been able to FaceTime and connect via social media, but not actually sit in the same room and hold hands.
Monica Medina-Espinosa decided she was going to change that and make the couple's first visit special. She ordered Italian food, secured a private conference room at the hospital, and set the ambiance with flowers, balloons and decorations.
From there it was up to Stephen to invite his date, Mariah Ramsey, over for dinner! Looks like they had a pretty good time dining in the privacy of the conferences room. Thanks to Monica and all of our Encompass Health of Colorado Springs staff for going the extra mile for our patients and families.

JJ Armstrong, lead chef, has been an integral part of our team since 2003. Her specialty is providing holiday meals for our patients and their families. Preparation starts days in advance, and she is here at 2 a.m. to start cooking the day of the event. She has been known to package up the leftovers so we can deliver them to homeless folks on the street.
Her favorite meal to prepare is Thanksgiving, typically serving around 250 patients and family members. While this Thanksgiving was different with visitor restrictions, JJ still made sure that every meal was special.
Thank you JJ for all you do for Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Colorado Springs!
Our senior leadership team at Encompass Health Colorado Springs decided to take the time usually dedicated to a holiday party to do something special for those less fortunate in our community. They put together 600 care packages for homeless folks packed with essential items.

“I was lucky to find rehabilitation nursing when I started as an RN on the night shift at Encompass Health. I quickly realized that rehabilitation was an amazing field to work in—we get the privilege of caring for patients and assisting them to work toward being their most independent selves. With the support of Encompass Health, I obtained my CRRN and became a night shift supervisor. I then transitioned to wound care, and then nurse manager positions here before taking on the chief nursing officer role. I am honored to work with our patients and support our amazing team here at Encompass Health.”
