Nov. 13 is National Physiatry Day. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) physicians, also known as physiatrists, are an integral part of the rehabilitation team A physiatrist aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to those with physical impairments or disabilities affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles and tendons. Unlike other medical specialties who focus on a medical “cure,” the goals of the physiatrist are to maximize patients’ independence in activities of daily living and improve quality of life. Inpatient physiatrists use collaborative team skills and work with social workers and other allied health therapists (e.g., physical, occupational and speech) to manage rehabilitation. Some of the common diagnoses and conditions treated by inpatient physiatrists include spinal cord injury, brain injury (traumatic and non-traumatic), stroke, multiple sclerosis, polio, burn care and musculoskeletal and pediatric rehabilitation.

Congratulations Teresa Hernandez on your discharge day! Teresa came to Encompass Health to regain strength and independence after battling COVID-19. An accidentally discharged firearm left Eric Thyr with a gunshot wound to the head. After several weeks in a coma at the hospital, he was transferred to Encompass Health with a trach, feeding tube and limited mobility. During his stay he made huge strides in communication and mobility. Due to his continued hard work he has since been able to return to work part-time as a commercial helicopter pilot.
Veronica Brown was sent to Encompass Health after a month on a ventilator battling COVID-19. However, after arriving, her limited mobility prompted her doctor to send her back to the hospital for neurological testing. The testing revealed a new, post-COVID-19 diagnosis for Brown, Guillain-Barre syndrome, an inflammatory disorder of the nerves that may cause temporary paralysis and is often triggered by a viral infection. With limited visitation options during the pandemic, families are finding unique ways to show their love, care and support for their loved ones. Encompass Health Henderson posted patients' room numbers on their windows making it easier for families to visit and leave encouraging notes.
After a multiple sclerosis flare landed Candace Infante at Encompass Health, her biggest goal was to be more involved with cooking at home with her family. Her occupational therapist, Aaron, incorporated cooking into her therapy. Candace was ecstatic to dig into her mother's chicken, rice and veggie recipe she made during therapy as Aaron coached her on safety and upper extremity coordination.
Mara Lopez had not stood on her feet in two and a half years due to complications from her stroke. After a recent trip to the emergency room, the first rehabilitation facility she went to told her there was not much more they could do. She was then recommended to go to Encompass Health. Here she is standing for the first time in over two years! “This is the first time I am able to stand in years. Now that I can stand, there is no reason I can’t walk. By the second week in the hospital battling COVID-19 and pneumonia, Lafayette Johnson’s lungs collapsed, and his kidneys were shutting down. He had to be placed on a ventilator. By the fourth week, he had a heart attack and was placed on a second life support. When he finally woke up, he was extremely weak. “COVID-19 devastated every muscle in my body, and I was in a hospital bed for five months,” he said. “I lost 57 pounds and wasn’t even able to stand up. After beating COVID-19, Ed Eames arrived at Encompass Health Henderson very weak, on oxygen and with low activity tolerance. Because of Ed’s hard work and motivation, our team was able to successfully wean him off oxygen at rest and during moderate activities and help him complete most activities independently. Her therapist worked with her on drawing a line and a circle. She had to work on controlling force, endurance and coordination. Miss K came to Encompass Health Henderson after a back surgery that left her with weakness in both her arms and legs. "While being a patient in this rehabilitation facility I was able to understand why the facility is named Encompass. The entire staff encompasses you with care, direction and encouragement. With their help, I was able to graduate from a walker to taking individual steps. I am now able to go home and not be a burden on my husband," she said as she prepared to go home.
Tai Chi is a gentle, meditative exercise that yields both mind and body benefits. Staying active and managing stress are two of the most important things you can do to prevent heart disease and improve your wellbeing. Encompass Health Henderson therapists are instructing Tai Chi to the seniors at Cactus Valley Retirement Resort every week in February.
