Recovering from COVID: The Hairstons' story | Encompass Health
This week was National Rehabilitation Awareness Week. From puppy parades to arts and crafts to ribbon dancing, our hospitals had a blast celebrating the theme "Discover the Possibilities" with events for both patients and employees. This week is about celebrating all the activities our patients have the potential of returning to because of rehabilitation.
Our therapy team works to incorporate our patients' passions into their therapy. After she had a stroke, professional baker Deborah Sheward came to Encompass Health to overcome right side weakness and balance issues.
After working hard with her occupational therapist, Bailey, on her fine motor skills, she was able to beautifully decorate a cake during her therapy session.
After experiencing a life-changing stroke or other illness, your doctor may recommend rehabilitation as the next step on the journey to recovery—but what does that mean, and where should rehabilitation take place?

"On March 6, 2017, my husband had a stroke. As a seasoned occupational therapist, stroke support group coordinator and hospital stroke program co-champion at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Savannah, most people would assume this would be an easier experience for me because I work with stroke survivors every day.
However, when I stepped out of my occupational therapy role, there was a lot that I learned from my new role as a caregiver. Here are just a few things to keep in mind as you are taking on this important role in your loved one’s life." - Eli Gold

At Encompass Health, we get to witness many special events in the lives of our patients. Sometimes, those special moments have little to do with rehabilitation but remind us why we come to work each day—to help our patients get back to their lives and loved ones.
Forty-three years ago on Sept. 30, Sarah and Avery West were married at 9 a.m. in a Las Vegas chapel in their hiking clothes after their morning hike.
To commemorate their anniversary, Avery surprised his bride with a vow renewal through her hospital window at 9 a.m., just like their wedding day 43 years ago. With only a few minutes' notice, the nursing staff set up flowers and balloons for decorations. Nurse supervisor Kenia Quezada brushed Sarah’s hair into a bun with a rose as her accent piece. The groom, pastor and family gathered outside her window to celebrate their marriage, complete with a wedding cake.
