About

Dr. Sam completed her medical school training and her master’s in public health from Tufts University School of Medicine in 2003 in a highly competitive 4 year combined MD/MPH program.  She completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York and her gastroenterology fellowship training at New York University.  During her gastroenterology fellowship training, she became interested in gastrointestinal motility disorders while shadowing well known and experienced esophagologist Dr. Morris Traube at NYU.  During her last year of her fellowship at NYU, she then received the American Neurogastroenterology Motility Society Fellowship and had the opportunity to work with an international leader in motility Dr. Satish Rao who further helped her develop her interest in anorectal manometry in diagnosing pelvic floor dysfunction, fecal incontinence and biofeedback.
After her gastroenterology fellowship, with her niche in gastrointestinal motility disorders, she joined Stony Brook University and built the Stony Brook Gastrointestinal Motility Center providing a multidisciplinary approach to gastrointestinal motility and functional disorders.  In 2012, she returned to NYC to Mount Sinai Hospital as Director of the Gastrointestinal Motility Center and Assistant Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology, and Director of the Gastrointestinal Motility Center and built a high volume center providing extensive services in the New York City area.
Dr. Sam is widely recognized as an expert in motility and functional disorders with a specialization in the entire GI tract motility including esophageal motility, small bowel motility, colonic motility and anorectal motility.  She also specializes in GERD diagnosis using the most innovative technology to diagnose GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), esophageal motility disorders including Achalasia, Hypersensitive esophagus, Esophageal spasm and Jackhammer esophagus.  She also is an expert in Stretta, a minimally invasive interventional reflux procedure featured on CBS news with Dr. Max Gomez in 2016.  Dr. Sam also specializes in gastric dysmotility including gastroparesis, botox injection of the pylorus for gastroparesis and SmartPill to diagnose motility disorders.  She has a specialty in small bowel diseases including Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth and was highly successful in the widespread promotion of SIBO nationally and internationally due to an article pitched to the Washington Post in 2015 by Dr. Sam describing a Medical Mystery Case which turned out to be SIBO. She is also well known as an expert in IBS and is able to provide a multidisciplinary personalized patient care plan to IBS patients collaborating with Nutritionists, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Accupuncturist and Life Coaches who teaches Meditation and Mindfulness techniques.  She is well versed in small bowel capsule endoscopy in diagnosing avm’s, small bowel tumors and celiac disease.   She is one of the leaders in pelvic floor dysfunction, biofeedback, slow transit constipation, gerd, non-cardiac chest pain, functional gastrointestinal disorders, Barrett’s esophagus, obesity.
She is a media expert and has a unique ability to combine her media expertise with the not so sexy topics like fecal incontinence, constipation and make it more comfortable for patients to discuss.  She is also very dedicated to community health and uses her Master’s in public health by working with underserved minorities, immigrants and giving back to the Caribbean by her tremendous volunteer work to promote colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, women’s health issues particularly abuse and many other important public health issues. She is well travelled, enjoys, cooking, art, music, reading, fashion, making art, singing karaoke, swimming, playing with her dog and thinking about new business endeavors.  She is looking forward to her new location in Midtown Manhattan!
