🍄 Fall Mushroom Safety Alert: 🍂 It can be difficult to distinguish between mushrooms that are toxic and those that are not. 🤔 The best course of action is to keep your pet away from areas where mushrooms are growing. 🚫 If your pet spots and sniffs a mushroom, do not allow them to eat it. Instead, do your best to distract them or use a 'leave it' command. 🗣

Hi! I’m Brandi-Jo! I’m a wife and mother of 2 human beings and 3 furry beings! I have been in Veterinary Medicine for 10 years and I love what I do, and have learned a lot over the years! I’m a Fear Free Certified Vet Tech and I love surgery and dentistry! The best part about my job is that I get to educate clients about their family member and make a difference in their lives. I always say, “I’m that patient's advocate” and I try to bring that to work with me everyday! ❤

Hello! My name is Crystal and I have been working in veterinary medicine for over 20yrs. I quickly realized that my passion was with emergency and speciality, particularly working as an ICU tech. I love monitoring patients while in the hospital and seeing them recover and be reunited with their family. I am married to my high school sweetheart, Ian, and we have three boys together. Andrew and Ivan are our twins (age 20) and Harrison (age 13) is the youngest. I am a registered member of the Haliwa-Saponi Indian Tribe located in Eastern NC. In my spare time, I enjoy traveling the pow wow circuit, reading books and snuggling with my cat, Luna, and my golden retriever, Ruger.
Hello, my name is Angela. I was born and raised here in NC. My love of animals has been strong for as long as I can remember, and I used to bring home every critter I could find, much to my parents dismay. I started working in the veterinary field in day practice in the year 2000 as a kennel assistant and worked my way up to technician. In 2006 I got my first job in emergency medicine and loved the fast pace, and how much help we can give to animals who are truly in need.
Happy Birthday Dr. Allgood! 🎂🎉

🤷‍♀️ Chai's owners brought him in to see us for an exam after hearing him make a strange gagging/ choking sound. 🩺 When in doubt always get your pet checked out. It turns out this sweet puppy was reverse sneezing! WHAT'S THAT YOU ASK? 🤔 🔹️Although it can be alarming to witness a dog having a reverse sneezing episode, it is not a harmful condition and there are no ill effects. The dog is completely normal before and after the episode. 🔹️During a reverse sneeze, the dog will make rapid and long inspirations, stand still, and extend his back and neck. A loud snorting sound is produced, which may sound like the dog has something caught his nose or throat. A reverse sneezing episode can last for several seconds to a minute. The exact cause is unknown but any irritation to the noses, sinuses, or back of the throat can trigger an episode. ❤ If your dog reverse sneezes, try gently stroking the neck and speak softly. You may be able to shorten the episode by calming them down.

⚠️ If your pet doesn't feel well after vaccines, contact a veterinarian and report their symptoms. It could be an emergency. Penny's owner noticed her face was swollen and that she had hives, after receiving her one year vaccination boosters. Penny was treated with an antihistamine, anti-inflammatory medications and fluids. Her owner will continue to give Benadryl at home over the next three days. ⚠️ Once a pet has had a vaccine reaction, separating injections can be done or pre-medication given to prevent future reactions.

🧦🩲 When it comes to our doggos eating inappropriate (and dangerous!) things, these days masks are the new socks and underwear. Why? Well, we already know dogs like the way their humans smell, and the way our clothes smell once we've worn them. Top that off with the lingering scent of the BLT you had for lunch, and it's understandable why dogs might find their owners' face masks irresistible. 😟 Unfortunately, ingestion of face masks can be harmful, even fatal, to our canine friends. Make sure your clients know to keep their used and unused masks safely away from their dogs by sharing this infographic and this terrific article by our friends at Vetzinsight: https://www.vin.com/vetzinsight/default.aspx?pid=756&catId=5860&Id=10014824 Let's keep 'em safe! 😊🐕 #veterinary #veterinarian #vetmed
If there's one thing we can all share on this Inauguration Day, it's the excitement of having America's FIRST rescue dog in the White House! 🎉 Major Biden was adopted from Delaware Humane Association in 2018. Major arrived at the shelter with his 5 siblings, all very sick. President Joe Biden's daughter saw the post on the shelter's Facebook page and sent it to her father, knowing he was looking for a companion for his older dog Champ. After being hospitalized for a few days, President Biden showed up to foster the sick puppy. He returned to the shelter with a grown Major months later to officially adopt him! Major will be the first shelter dog to live in the White House, which is exciting news for shelter dogs everywhere! 🐶 #petadoption #rescue #shelterdog

🐶 Jasper was more than happy to hang onto Brandi-Jo's shoulder, while we waited for his ear cytology results. ❓What is an ear cytology, you ask? An ear cytology is a laboratory procedure that allows us to microscopically see what is ‘growing’ in a patient’s ear (under a microscope). Although we do a comprehensive exam and look into the pet’s ears with an otoscope, we can only ‘see so much’. Bacteria and yeast are too small to see with the naked eye and come in many types (species). 🔬 Once we take a swab of the ear, we will roll the debris from the swab onto a microscope slide, fix and stain the slide and then look under the microscope for microbe identification. 💊 Without this test, we are just guessing about which medications to use and there are dozens of medications to choose from. Successful treatment of an ear infection can be expedited if we know exactly what we are treating and which medications will be most effective.

🍫 This Valentine’s Day favorite contains a chemical called theobromine that is highly toxic to dogs. The darker the chocolate, the greater the concentration of theobromine. Ingesting even small amounts can lead to nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, increased heart rate, seizures, heart failure, and death. ⚠️ Immediate veterinary care is recommended for any dog that consumes chocolate. While chocolate is also toxic to cats, it poses less risk, because cats are generally uninterested in eating chocolate. 🍫 Small, sturdy candy wrappers like those found in many Valentine’s Day heart boxes are hazards as well, because they can become lodged in throats or digestive tracts, requiring surgery to remove them. This year marks our 13th Anniversary!! 🎉 On February 12, 2008, Dr. Kelley Gebhardt opened Happy Tails. She envisioned a comfortable office setting that local community members could bring their pets to on nights and weekends. Happy Tails continues to offer the highest quality emergency medicine and compassionate care. We’ve grown a lot in the last 13 years, but the vision remains the same. Time has flown for us because we've been blessed, having fun, doing what we love while serving our community. We can’t wait to celebrate future anniversaries with our team, our patients and our wonderful clients. 🥳 Anyone remember the original sign?

Did you know there are armadillos in North Carolina? 👀 Have you seen one? Based on observations, it appears the armadillo is naturally expanding its range throughout North Carolina, rather than being helped by human intervention (e.g., brought in illegally). The number of counties with confirmed observations is 23, stretching from Cherokee to Dare counties (see page 13). However, the nine-banded armadillo is likely in more counties, based on both credible and unconfirmed observations. And in several western counties, based on the number of reports, we are starting to see the establishment of a population, with breeding and reproduction occurring. 📸 A wildlife photographer has shared a once-in-a-lifetime photo of what he believes is a “never before seen” yellow penguin. The penguin’s strange coloring is due to a condition called leucism, which results in a loss of pigmentation. 🐧 "Penguins use the yellow pigment to attract mates and we strongly suspect that the yellow molecule is synthesized internally,” researcher Daniel Thomas tells Smithsonian Insider. 💛 "In the case of this fully-yellow penguin, however, it’s unclear whether its distinctive plumage makes the bird ultra-attractive or ultra-repulsive to the ladies." #WildlifeWednesday #neverbeforeseen #antarctica PETAPIXEL.COM Wildlife Photographer Captures 'Never Before Seen' Yellow Penguin
The Northern Cardinal is found abundantly throughout the Southeastern states; they are an official symbol for North Carolina – and have been since 1943. But did you know that there are three 'true' Cardinals belonging to the genus Cardinalis- the Desert Cardinal, the Vermilion Cardinal & the Northern Cardinal? Most people also think that cardinals are hearty and abundant creatures. However, urban development has caused numbers to drop. This is especially true in California, where cardinals are native to the Colorado River Valley. Even in North Carolina, the bird has seen population drops, according to National Geographic. https://sciencing.com/different-species-cardinal-birds-8146270.html #WildlifeWednesday #Cardinal
