Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Hermitage Roanoke! To honor this season of gratitude, we would like to share a poem that one of our volunteers, Jody Hammje, shared with us. Thanksgiving Song For every gift that comes our way— A Bird that sings, a child at play— For all the lovely fragrant flowers And for the friendships that are ours, We thank You, God. For every dream across the years. And memories of smiles and tears, For songs that lift the heart from care, Companionship that we may share, We thank You, God. For home wherein we turn for est To find the ones we love the best, The liberty for which we stand, And peace that lies upon our land, We thank You, God. Happy Thanksgiving!

Melissa Kasey is our February Hero! Melissa has been a great addition to our Dogwood Lane (DWL) Neighborhood! Since she started here almost a year ago, she has been a huge asset to our team. She always goes the extra mile to help our residents and her teammates: staying late, picking up shifts when needed, learning the resident’s likes and dislikes, and even organizing birthday celebrations for them! Melissa’s kind smile and personality put our residents at ease. She is eager to learn and has jumped in to help wherever she can, with anything that is needed. We are so glad to have her on our team! Melissa, you truly are a hero!

As we continue to recognize the legacy of Rev. Warner Crumb, our Chaplain Joe Cobb shares this remembrance: "While at Hermitage, Warner was known for his prayer cards which graced our dining room tables for years as a way for residents to pray at each meal, and for his continuous support of our spiritual life programs. Warner was an avid woodworker with a shop on site and loved to play pool. He would often gather with area clergy for a monthly dinner at Hermitage as a way to stay connected. One of Warner’s most beautiful legacies were the small cards he left after each meal at his table setting, thanking his server for their act of service." “What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.” - Pericles, Philosopher
You recognize the power of an individual’s legacy when the generations that follow are impacted by the person’s words and actions. James Stovall, Executive Director at Hermitage Roanoke, honors the life of Rev. Warner Crumb today by sharing: “Reverend Crumb will be greatly missed. He made me feel welcome when he introduced himself on my first day at Hermitage Roanoke and let me know about his history with our company and The United Methodist Church. Most of all, I will miss him sharing his insights and experience with leading a successful and caring community. He never missed an opportunity to remind me I was his brother in Christ and that he was praying for all of us." “All good men and women must take responsibility to create legacies that will take the next generation to a level we could only imagine.” —Jim Rohn Pinnacle Living February 9 at 9:51 AM · Today we remember the impact that Rev. Warner Crumb had upon the formation of Pinnacle Living. Rev. Crumb died yesterday at the age of 100. He was an active clergy in the Virginia Conference serving Ramsey Memorial UMC on the Richmond District in 1962 when he was contacted about serving with the then Virginia Methodist Home for the Aged. On the Sunday before Annual Conference was to begin that year, Rev. Crumb interviewed for the role of administrator for Hermitage Richmond and the Snyder Memorial Home. As he would share the story, Rev. Crumb would say, “As we finished the interview, they asked me, if selected would I commit to serve as administrator for 10 years? Little did they know that I would serve for 18 years!” He also served as Director of Development in the corporate office for a short time. In 1983, Rev. Crumb returned to pastoral ministry as the District Superintendent of the Eastern Shore. Below is the prayer Rev. Crumb offered for the 70th Anniversary of Pinnacle Living in 2018. Well done, good and faithful servant.
❤️Happy Valentine’s Week! Every day this week we will be celebrating love at Hermitage Roanoke by sharing pictures of couples that have stood the test of time! Pictured below are love birds Claudine and Solon Simpson. This year they will be celebrating their 66th Wedding Anniversary!❤️
We thought these “tips and tricks” for having a successful zoom call with someone with dementia might be helpful for family and friends of our residents as well as others. We’ve noticed many families struggling with conversation over Zoom. Click on the link for the full article but keep these things in mind: 1. Do some research before calling a friend or family member living with dementia to find out what they like to talk about. 2. Share your screen to keep someone living with dementia excited and engaged. 3. Get creative with music. 4. Show and tell. Work with Hermitage Roanoke team members in advance to have a treasured object like a family photo album ready on their side. Have something meaningful ready to show and talk about on your side as well. 5. Have a backup plan – and be flexible. https://www.alzsd.org/best-practices-zoom-video-calls-dementia/ ALZSD.ORG Best Practices: Zoom video calls & dementia - Alzheimer's San Diego
