Hurley Wellness celebrates employees who are passionate about health and wellness, whether they have achieved or are working toward a personal mental or physical health goal or they foster a culture of wellness. The inaugural Wellness Hero of the Quarter, Trina Isaac, Administrative Secretary of Environmental Services, does all of that—she promotes wellness in her department while also striving to reach her own goals. “You’ve heard of ‘out of sight, out of mind,’” Trina says. “I believe in ‘in sight, in mind.’” So she makes a point of printing out the healthy recipes, stress relief tips and other information from Wellness to ensure her team sees them. She’s also known for starting meetings with a mindful moment. “I make them stand up, stretch and take a deep breath in and deep breath out. Breathing is so important,” Trina explains. “You become in the moment when you breathe. Just take a moment to focus on yourself—it’s something the most-fit person and the least-fit person can all do.” As for her own health and wellness, Trina shares, “The goal I’m most proud of achieving is digging deep—just the ability to stay well mentally. I know how to handle stress better than I used to. It’s something I always worked toward and still do. So, the ability to stay calm in situations. I also have fitness goals I’m working toward. I’m not there yet, but I’m working toward them.” “We are so excited to announce Trina Isaac, from Environmental Services, as Hurley’s first ever Wellness Hero of the Quarter. Trina has been a warrior and an advocate for all that is wellness at Hurley for many years and she is so deserving of this honor,” states the Hurley Wellness Team.

With her warm personality, kind heart and determination to provide the best possible care to all of her patients, it’s no wonder Kaitlyn Naegle, RN, is our DAISY Award recipient. The award recognizes exceptional nurses who provide skillful and compassionate care. Kaitlyn has done just that in the 5E Step-down Neuro, Ortho and Burn Unit, guaranteeing she has a positive impact on her patients. “I always try to be a good listening ear for them,” Kaitlyn shares. “I like to make sure my patients know I’m here to listen. They’re going through so much—not even just here, but also at home.” While she has many responsibilities, from providing pain management and changing dressings to monitoring patients to ensure they’re stable, her favorite part is being there for others. “I love my patients, just making sure they know I’m there for them. I love helping people.” A nurse at heart since she was 16 and volunteering as a caretaker for an elderly couple, Kaitlyn first came to Hurley as a candy striper in the ER and pediatrics. She then worked as a CNA in nursing homes while earning her associate’s degree and becoming an RN. Always challenging herself, Kaitlyn works full time but also goes to school full time for her BSN. She expresses great gratitude toward her husband, Brian, for his unwavering support, as well as her 5E team. “Every nurse on my floor is incredible,” she asserts. “I also have the best manager, Kim Lipka.” “Kaitlyn is loved by her co-workers, patients and families. She is a wonderful person. I am very honored to work alongside Kaitlyn each and every day. Her work ethic and teamwork are appreciated all around. Her cheerful personality and contagious smile are an asset to the 5E Neuro Trauma Burn Step-down Unit.” -Kimberly Lipka, Nurse Manager, Neuro/Trauma/Surgical/Burn ICU & 5E Ortho/Surgical Step-down Unit. As the DAISY Award winner, Kaitlyn notes, “I was very honored. I always give the best care to my patients, but you don’t expect anything for it. I feel honored everyone went above and beyond on this for me. It’s very kind.”

30 Years of Miracles! In August, 2009 five-year-old Archer Granger was walking behind an industrial lawn mower at a friend’s house when the mower turned, running him over. Archer suffered life threatening injuries. His right foot was 95 percent severed. He lost one and a half toes on his left foot. The tendons were severed, along with two of the three main arteries, and he sustained significant bone loss. Archer was airlifted from Marlette to Hurley Medical Center, the only Level I Trauma Center north of Detroit. It took four surgeries, 18 surgeons, several pediatric specialists and nearly 40 attendants to save Archer’s feet, and his life. Today, Archer is proof that miracles happen! As we celebrate 30 years as a CMN Hospital, we hope you enjoy the trip down memory lane. If you can, please give at justgiving.com/campaign/cmn30. 30 Years of Miracles. As we celebrate 30 years as a CMN Hospital, we are sharing stories of the miracles created at Hurley Children's Hospital. “We are so grateful to Hurley for giving us our sons." That's what Kim and Darrin Wade say about their sons - all 4 of them! Fertility treatments with Dr. Mostafa Abuzeid gave them quadruplets in 1999. With the help of Dr. Chan, one by one Aaron, Nicholas, Zachary and Nigel all graduated from the Hurley NICU. But their joint decision as they graduated from high school is what garnered national headlines. Here's their appearance on the Today Show - their first day all together at Yale! We hope you will join us on this journey of 30 Years of Miracles and if you can, please donate at justgiving.com/campaign/cmn30 - together we can create miracles for the next generation.

You can see final deliveries are underway for the kids at Hurley Children's Hospital. We also had to share this amazing text/story we got from Amy Sparks. 💖 Her twins were in the PICU for RSV and the family has now made blankets just like the ones they received last year at the hospital. Here's what she wrote: "We’re so grateful for all the things Hurley has done for our family the past 3 years. These 2 were born at 30 weeks and stayed until a few days before Christmas of 2017. We’ve stayed in the PICU a few times but both kids at the holidays was very hard and Hurley made sure that Santa visited just like if we were at home." New toy donations are being accepted at the School of Nursing until 4pm today (call 810-262-5977) or if you would like to give to help us continue miracles like these, please donate at justgiving.com/campaign/cmn30. Thank-you Amy for giving back!!!

It's been a long year and many people finally have a feeling it's the beginning of the end of this pandemic. Stay safe everyone. We are going to get through this! #HurleyCares

30 Years of Miracles. Greg Williams returns to Hurley Children's Hospital nearly 3 decades after his son's passing. See what's been in his living room that entire time. The gift to Dr. Susumu Inoue is a testament to the connections made here.
30 Years of Miracles! When Dei’On Wright was just a couple of months old, he started spitting up a lot. His pediatrician thought it was acid reflux. But, when he was five months old and wouldn’t do anything except lay on the bed and suck his pacifier, his family knew something was very wrong, One visit to Hurley’s Emergency Department confirmed their suspicion. Deion was suffering from a Wilms tumor - that’s kidney cancer. Doctors gave him a 50/50 chance of surviving surgery. The affected kidney was successfully removed. This brave little fighter went through eight months of chemotherapy and radiation. Today, he’s a healthy, active, seventh grader at New Standard where he’s been the quarterback of their football team. He also enjoys baseball and basketball. Please give to continue miracles like these. justgiving.com/campaign/cmn30

Employee of the Month Gjeserina (Ina) Melakuqi is undeniably dedicated to the important role she plays at Hurley. She is so committed that she drives two hours round trip just to be here each day. The commute doesn’t faze her though. “I enjoy helping all employees to ensure they have a safe place to work,” Ina explains. As an Occupational Health Care Specialist, Ina makes sure employees are protected with immunizations and are familiar with proper body mechanics. “I want to make sure all employees know how to protect themselves from injuries,” Ina says. She also ensures they know what to do if they have an exposure to a communicable disease, blood or body fluids. Occupational Health works closely with Infection Control to ensure we are treating and following up according to CDC guidelines. . “We care for our employees. We are a small department, but we work really well together to take care of our own, so that makes it special and unique,” says Ina. "Gjeserina can be counted on to take on any size project and she does it with professionalism and great drive,” shares Olivia Wallace, Outpatient Coordinator. “She is always taking initiative and has a strong passion to see the overall success of the department and organization. What many people might not know is what Ina does for our Hurley employees, she does for a significant amount of other companies in the community, including the City of Flint, Lear Corporation and Flint Fire and Police departments. Ina displays excellence in all her work. Her positive energy and hard work ethic are greatly appreciated, and she is very deserving of this recognition.” “Gjeserina has shown to be a great asset to our organization as she takes the lead in many house-wide projects,” Melissa Bachman, Director of Ambulatory Operations, attests. “She is dependable, knowledgeable and a great team player. She never hesitates to accept additional responsibility, many times with short notice. Her positive attitude and dedication is displayed in everything she does and is a perfect representation of team Hurley.” With a thirst for knowledge, Ina feels right at home here. “I am a person who loves to learn. I like learning new things every day and Hurley has been great for that,” Ina notes. Outside of Hurley, she is working toward her bachelor’s degree, with the end goal of becoming a physician assistant one day. When she’s not working or studying, Ina enjoys being outdoors, particularly in the summer, when she can go kayaking or hiking without worrying about the cold. Congratulations Ina! Sovita Credit Union
30 Years of Miracles! Kati and Jillian McLincha were born on November 21, 2005 THREE months early! Jillian weighed two pounds, four ounces. Kati was two pounds, two ounces. Their parents, Jennifer and Rex McLincha placed their trust in God and the amazing team at Hurley’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). It was difficult leaving their tiny babies each day. Kati was discharged first on February 5, 2006. She came home on an apnea monitor, oxygen and nine medications. Jillian followed three weeks later. She was also on oxygen and an apnea monitor. Imagine the irony of two girls who battled such breathing problems ending up running track! This past fall they were able to run cross country for Flushing High School. Currently, they are experiencing their freshman year as “virtual” students. It was a little challenging at first but they’ve both found their stride with this new form of learning. They appreciate the fact that they are each other’s best friend. That makes a difference. The girls are both excited about their venture into writing. Kati is currently editing a book she has written and Jillian published her first book over the summer. They both have a talent and love for this. As we celebrate our 30th anniversary as a CMN Hospital, Jennifer recalls “Each and every person we came in contact with at Hurley has a very special place in our family ‘s heart!” To ensure miracles like these are possible donate now at justgiving.com/campaign/cmn30

For caring for some of the sickest COVID-19 patients and filling in for their loved ones, Danielle Middleton, BSN, RN, is our Employee of the Month. Danielle is honored to care for her patients in the ICCU and COVID- ICU. "We hold their hands and comfort them,” shares Danielle. “Just being able to comfort them when loved ones can’t be there, it’s a privilege for me.” Danielle has a breadth of experience. Prior to her nursing career, she served eight years in the U.S. Air Force Security Forces. Afterward, she moved to Michigan to be close to her husband’s family and earned her BSN at UofM-Flint. It was then that Danielle was drawn to Hurley. “I did most of my clinicals at Hurley and just fell in love with the atmosphere,” recalls Danielle. “I did some clinicals at other places, but I just fell in love with the patient population here.” In May, Danielle will have been with our ICCU for three years. She values how her coworkers find ways to lighten the mood. For example, someone taped a little area by the nurses’ station and declared it the dancing square, where anyone could stand and just dance if they needed to. “The people I work with, I couldn’t do this without them,” Danielle says. “We’re very close. We cry on each other’s shoulders and we may yell, but we’ve really come together as a team.” “Danielle embodies the spirit of teamwork and is consistently found to be helping others on the unit,” boasts Michele Gilmore, MSN, RN, Nurse Manager, ICCU & PCU. “Danielle has also been a great mentor for our newly hired staff and creates a supportive learning environment for them. Danielle is one of the most compassionate, patient and kind RNs that I have worked with. Her dedication to the unit, staff, patients and Hurley goes above and beyond.” Danielle knows the importance of taking time to relax. She decompresses by reading, taking warm baths, spending time with her husband and son, watching movies and going for walks. She also enjoys working on home improvement projects, like refinishing furniture. Danielle deeply appreciates her support system. In addition to her husband and son, Danielle can always count on her extended family to be there for her, whether it be in the form of flowers from her in-laws or a call or text from her mom and sister. Congratulations, Danielle! Sovita Credit Union

There will be a virtual Celebration of Life event on Thursday, March 4, 2021 at 1PM. It will be open to the public. Details on how to view will be made available shortly. Mrs. Janice Dismond is not accepting any calls at this time and the family asks that you respect her privacy during this grievous time.

Hurley History is Black History. 📖 Claudia Tarver, RN was hired by Hurley Hospital in 1951. She was the hospital's first black Nurse Administrator. She left in the 1960s to become a public health nurse for Flint. According to Dr. Samuel Dismond who considered Tarver a pioneer, “She didn’t have many peers or mentors, because there just weren’t many.” He also credits Tarver for opening the door for his rise in becoming the first black chief of staff. “You knew she was in charge. But she was good with people. I think that people respected her…People were glad to say they knew her,” Dismond said.

Employee of the Month Alicia Ferguson has been an integral part of the Internal Medicine (IM) Residency Training Program throughout her career here—nearly 13 years. As Medical Education Office Coordinator for IM, Alicia serves as the hub of our largest residency program. By managing the day-to-day processes for IM residents, Alicia guarantees they are doing everything necessary for a well-rounded training experience. She personalizes her communication style to the individual, understanding that while some respond well to direct, straightforward information, others require a softer approach. She also provides assistance to IM faculty, whether it be scheduling meetings, generating reports, typing letters or helping with presentations and didactics. “I was speechless—and it’s hard to render me speechless,” Alicia says. “It’s all well and good to know yourself that you’re doing a good job, but for someone else to pay attention and take the time to nominate you, that’s something else. I’m very appreciative and grateful.” Although few witness the intricacies of her job, Alicia has a big impact on the entire department, acting as a peacemaker, making sure everyone is taken care of and feels like they belong. “There are so many people coming from so many places, but it really helps you meet people where they are if you know where they’re coming from,” Alicia explains. “At the end of the day, my goal is to see our department do well and for our program director and faculty to be recognized for the good things they are doing. I do my part behind the scenes to make sure we stay on that even keel.” “Alicia, officially you are my office coordinator and I am your ‘boss.’ But unofficially we all know who runs the office around here,” shares Dr. Ghassan Bachuwa, Internal Medicine and Transitional Year Program Director. “For all you give, for all you do, for the knowledge you acquired in medical education, for working hard, for being you and after all a guardian for 51 residents and tens of faculty in the program, for being there day in and day out, thank you—and congratulations on this recognition! Let me express my appreciation on behalf of all residents and faculty in the program by quoting ‘No one is more cherished in this world than someone who lightens the burden of another.’” In her spare time, Alicia enjoys spending time with her family, especially at the lake or a park. She also loves cooking. An avid reader, she devours books from all genres, including African American fiction, urban fantasy novels, horror and classics. Congratulations, Alicia! Sovita Credit Union

〽️〽️ Miracle Monday - Charlie Lash (A child's journey with COVID-19.) On Wednesday, December 2, 2020, Kimberlie Wright rushed her then 7 year old daughter, Charlie Lash, to Hurley’s Pediatric Emergency Department. Charlie had a full body scan and, even though all signs pointed to appendicitis, nothing showed up. Her COVID test came back negative. The doctors thought it was wise to admit her. They were right. Within a couple of days, Charlie developed a rash on her little finger that rapidly spread across her entire body within hours. She couldn’t move her neck. Her condition deteriorated rapidly. A spinal tap was performed. Meningitis was ruled out. So was Kawasaki Disease. Surprisingly, another COVID swab showed antibodies. How could this be? Apparently, Charlie was asymptomatic for COVID-19 just before December and no one knew. Hurley doctors diagnosed Charlie with MIS-C (a multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children) which is a rare but serious complication associated with COVID-19. The inflammation in the child’s body can limit blood flow, damaging the heart, kidneys, and other organs. After nine long days at Hurley, Charlie was discharged. But this was not the end of her journey. Life for this now 8 year old second-grader at List Elementary in Frankenmuth is filled with doctors' appointments. Dr. Nancy Cutler, Pediatric Cardiologist, Dr. Shannon Dennis, Pediatric Neuropsychologist, and Dr. Yaseen Rafee, Infectious Disease Specialist each play an important role in Charlie’s life right now. Both Kimberlie and Charlie’s dad, Joseph Lash, are grateful to the medical team at Hurley as well as the Child Life Specialists who made such a difference. Today, this bright little girl is back to being the “light” in her world. She’s a whiz at math and enjoys her arts and crafts again. Without a doubt, Charlie Lash is truly a miracle! It's not done intentionally. Sometimes grandparents put their medications in a drawer or on a counter top out of convenience, thinking the medicine is out of reach of children. But kids can get into stuff. Today, take a second to see where medications are and get them up high, out of reach. You could save a child from accidental poisoning. #HurleyCares
