Throwback Thursday! On this day, in 1896, Charles Dow starts reporting on an average of several industrial stocks from companies that were the titans of their day. The original 12 companies were quite different from the Apples and Amazons that we keep our present-day eyes upon...they helped usher in a trend that would probably make old Charles pretty proud. Thank you, Mr Dow! 📈📊 INVESTOPEDIA.COM What Were the Original Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) Companies?

~Employee Spotlight, Sherry McFarland! 🔦 We are going to be highlighting an Element Wealth Advisors team member every month and we start with Sherry McFarland. Sherry is our “go to” woman around the office. If you have a question, Sherry has an answer. She can help you with pretty much ANYTHING that you need and she always does it with a smile. Here are some things to know about Sherry. Her first concert was Rod Stewart in 1972. She would love to be a high school football coach. Three traits that define her are honesty, integrity and promptness and the thing that makes her the happiest is her family. And, if you didn’t already know, she loves her Tennessee football just a little bit. 😉 “Sherry is an outstanding member of our team. She always strives to create the best experience for our clients and the other members of our firm. We are so grateful for her hard work and tenacity on all levels” ~ Todd Mitman “Sherry has a can-do attitude, is very helpful to our clients, friendly and takes a lot of pride in her work. We’re thankful to have her on the team” ~ Jeremy Reese So, the Spotlight is on you, Sherry! Thank you for all that you do and, Go Vols! 🧡

To continue our conversation about Black entrepreneurs, today we highlight Annie Malone. One of America's first and most prominent African-American businesswomen, Malone founded and developed Poro College, a commercial and educational business focused on cosmetics for black women. Born to former slaves in Illinois and orphaned at a young age, Malone lived with her sister and gravitated towards chemistry in high school. She would later develop a chemical that could straighten black women's hair without causing damage to the hair or scalp. Poro College, as an institution of learning, was later established as a way to teach people about black cosmetology. By the 1920s, Annie Turnbo Malone had become a multi-millionaire. In 1924 she paid income tax of nearly $40,000, reportedly the highest in Missouri. While extremely wealthy, Malone lived modestly, giving thousands of dollars to the local, black YMCA and the Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, DC. She became a benefactor of the St. Louis Colored Orphan’s Home, where she served as president on the board of directors from 1919 to 1943. With her help, in 1922, the Home bought a facility at 2612 Goode Avenue, which was renamed Annie Malone Drive in her honor. Through the cosmetology school and the business, Malone created jobs for 75,000 women around the world and through her philanthropy, she helped countless others. She's recorded as the first black female millionaire in the United States, with a reported $14 million in assets in 1920 (a whopping $167 million by today's standards).
It’s appropriate that National Time Management Month is the shortest month of the year. This February, let’s find time to talk.
In the spirt of Black History Month, we are going to focus on black entrepreneurs throughout history, primarily those from the late 18th to 20th century who have rarely been recognized. Our first entrepreneur is Stephen Smith. Smith was born around 1795 and grew up as an indentured servant in Pennsylvania. From a young age, he was assigned to work in the lumberyards by Thomas Boude, whose wealth stemmed from his extensive lumber business. After buying his freedom for $50 at the age of 21, Smith continued to work in the lumberyards until establishing his own lumber business in 1822, as well as selling coal. By the 1850s, Smith was grossing $100,000 in annual sales. By 1857, Smith was worth $500,000 (approximately $13.5 million today). On top of being a businessman, Smith was a minister and served as chairman of the black abolitionist organization in Columbia, PA. He was also part of the support system of the Underground Railroad and funded many projects to support children and the infirm. Smith died in Philadelphia on November 4, 1873, and was buried in one of the sites that he had supported financially, Olive Cemetery. His death brought public recognition for his efforts in race reform and his success as a wealthy black entrepreneur.
This #blackhistorymonth, we remember 2021 as the 60th anniversary of the Freedom Riders, black and white activists who helped end segregation. Who inspires you?
