What are your financial goals for 2021? Together, we can work towards achieving your priorities for this year and beyond.
To our Valued Clients, Colleagues and Friends:
Wow- what a year 2020 has been! As this historic year finally draws to a close, we look forward to good health, success, and happiness that we hope 2021 will bring to us all.
This has been a year of uncertainty and profound loss. It has also been a year filled with hope and resilience. But more than anything else it has been a year filled with gratitude.
We are grateful for the healthcare workers, teachers, first responders, and essential workers who have given so much of themselves to others this year, often at great personal peril.
We are grateful for our families and friends who have carried us through these unique times with love, compassion and a little humor.
We are grateful for the Element Wealth Advisors team members. Ten months ago, this amazing group of people were notified that they would all be working from home. Everyone gathered their things, set up their PC’s, phones, kitchen table workstations and were ready to go within hours of this monumental work change. Everyone stepped up seamlessly to move our firm to a remote work environment while ensuring that all our clients’ needs were taken care of without disruption. As the months at home past, our team has continued to perform at the highest level. They have juggled the demands of young children, school-aged children learning remotely, technology challenges and pets who were not used to having us around all day. Our successes this year are your successes. They would not have been possible without an aggressive, thorough and deliberate plan coupled with your understanding.
This year, more than any other year, we are grateful for your continued support and trust. Despite the uncertainty of 2020 we were proud to have been able to provide the same high-quality service and advice you have come to expect. We take pride in providing an unparalleled client experience, quality advice, and expert investment management. As we look forward to the New Year, we extend our promise to continue our highest level of service while we explore innovative ways to elevate the experience you have with our firm. It is with an immense amount of gratitude we thank you for working with us.
Please accept our best wishes for a happy and healthy new year for you and your families.
Sincerely,

Today, we are going to feature a home-town entrepreneur, David Tobias Howard. He rose from slavery at his birth in Crawford County, Georgia in 1849, to being called “Atlanta’s most beloved citizen and the city’s pioneer businessman” in the Atlanta Daily World’s obituary of him in 1935.
Howard, who took the name of his slave master after the Civil War, worked as a railroad porter in Atlanta before becoming an undertaker, with his mortuary business eventually making him one of the city's first black millionaires. He was also a founder of the city’s first, black-owned bank, Atlanta State Savings Bank.
Howard was a noted philanthropist and civic activist and his efforts and contributions included support of the Butler Street YMCA, Big Bethel AME Church and education on behalf of Booker T. Washington High School and the Atlanta University Center, according to the Daily World.
Perhaps the most lasting example of his legacy was his donation of the property at 551 John Wesley Dobbs Ave., which from 1923 to it’s closing in 1976 was the site of the David T. Howard School. Among the notable students at the school given by a former slave to educate black Atlantans were Martin Luther King Jr., Maynard Jackson, Vernon Jordan, Herman J. Russell, Eldrin Bell, and Walt Frazier. Howard died at his granddaughter’s house in Atlanta at age 85. His body was taken to the David T. Howard Mortuary.
On a personal note, the school that he helped establish has very recently been renovated and re-opened as an Atlanta middle school. My son is proud to be a student at the David T. Howard Middle School. The building has been empty since 1976 and the renovation, which took over two years, has left a thoughtful and stunning tribute to Mr. Howard’s legacy in Atlanta. Read about the renovation and see pictures at the link below.

Today, we are going to feature Madam C. J. Walker. Born under the name “Sarah Breedlove”, Madam C.J. Walker developed a special line of beauty and hair products for black women under her company, “Madame C.J Walker Manufacturing”. Much like Annie Malone, she was one of the first American women to become a self-made millionaire; in fact, it was through Malone's Poro College that she first learned about the science of black cosmetology. Many of her philanthropy efforts went towards anti-lynching. The successful Madam Walker also used her fortune to fund scholarships for women at the Tuskegee Institute and donated large parts of her wealth to the NAACP, the Black YMCA and other charities.
Her daughter, A’Lelia Walker, took over the company after the death of Madam CJ in 1919 and remained in that position until her own demise in 1931. Their incredible story is featured in the Netflix movie, “Self Made”.
EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT! ~ Bailey Birol🔦
Bailey was born in Tampa, FL but she didn’t stay there long! At the age of six, she and her family moved to Moscow, Russia for 8 years. After returning to the States, home base became Georgia. Bailey attended Berry College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology. After college, she moved to Texas to work with the primates of the Houston Zoo. She had every intention of returning to Georgia sooner rather than later (Texas is very hot), but decided to stick around because she met this cool guy named Onur who did magic tricks on their first date. They must have been wildly impressive magic tricks because she ended up marrying him in 2016.
They decided to move back to Georgia in 2017 and Bailey changed careers and joined the team at Element Wealth Advisors as an executive assistant. Now, she acts as a financial planning specialist and assists with the collection and entry of client data, running insurance policies, and client follow up.
Bailey and Onur just had their first child, Finley, in January of 2020. He is an absolute joy and Bailey cannot wait until he’s old enough to drive a Go Kart – Onur is less excited about this idea.
I asked Bailey to answer a few questions and got some really fun answers!
~Describe something unique about your childhood/teen years?
I grew up in Russia! My parents did humanitarian work and helped manage an orphanage in Moscow.
~People would be surprised if they knew:
My entire family is obsessed with Formula 1.
~What would you most like to tell your 13-year-old self?
This sounds so cliché, but follow your dreams; however, don’t forget that it’s okay if your dreams change.
~Do you have a pet? What is your favorite thing about them?
According to Onur, we have too many pets. Barnum, the dog. Winchester, the cat. Tupelo, the cockatiel! Don’t tell the other two, but Barnum is the favorite because he’s the best boy.
~Be honest, do you wear elastic waistbands while working remotely?
Yes – yoga pants for days. 😊.
Thank you, Bailey, for everything that you do for our clients and the Element Wealth Team. We appreciate your sense of humor, knowledge of EVERYTHING around the office and seeing Finley’s precious face on the occasional Teams Meeting.
As we continue our celebration of Black entrepreneurs, we are going to talk about Samuel T. Wilcox. S. T. Wilcox, was a retail and wholesale grocery-store entrepreneur in Cincinnati, Ohio. His turned out to be the first, established, grocery store chain, owned by a Black man; selling the highest quality of dried fruit, hams, soaps, and other popular commodities.
His layout of the local store was a feature that attracted many customers. Some say that he had the most extensive business house of its kind and it had more of the appearance of an fine, apothecary store rather than just a simple, grocery house.
Quickly, he became “the largest dealer of provisions in the city,” establishing commercial links with New Orleans and New York. By the mid-1850s, he had mostly rich customers contributing to his $140,000/year annual sales. That’s about $4.2 million in today’s dollars, adjusted for inflation.
Wilcox eventually built up a large wholesale market in New York, Boston, and Baltimore and a local, retail trade among elite families in those cities. When asked why he went into the grocery business, Wilcox said, “I might have bought a farm and lived on my money, but I wished to show, if I could, that colored people could do something besides being barbers…Many advised me not to try, and said nobody would buy groceries of a colored man.”
Kindness and helping others are more important than ever. How do you plan to observe #randomactsofkindness day?

Today, for Women’s History Month, let’s talk about Lydia Pinkham. Lydia Pinkham reputedly came into possession of a secret medicinal recipe when her husband, Isaac, accepted the formula in lieu of money owed to him. The recipe contained five main herbs—pleurisy root, life root, fenugreek, unicorn root, and black cohosh—and alcohol. Pinkhman brewed her first batch of the soon-to-be-famous Vegetable Compound on her stove, and just three years later, she launched the Lydia E. Pinkham Medicine Co., a home remedy business run by and for women.
Pinkham claimed that her Vegetable Compound could cure a spectrum of female-specific ailments. She started out small, first distributing her compound to neighbors and friends, but in the midst of the financial crisis of 1873—when her husband was ruined—she began selling it and writing female health pamphlets to go alongside it. Her three sons helped her package, market, and sell the compound, and the strategic advertising campaign they implemented was key to the business’s success. She was the first woman to put her own likeness on her product, which helped create brand loyalty and spoke to her target audience: women. Eventually, she was able to expand her business beyond the U.S. and into Canada and Mexico.
There is little evidence proving the medical efficacy of Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound, and she is often lumped into the quackery category along with hundreds of other 19th century patent medicine producers. But she was also addressing a need for women-centered health care, which was often inadequate at the time. To find alternative methods of care, and avoid dangerous, expensive doctor visits, women often turned to home remedies—like Pinkham’s compound.
Today, we are learning about a woman who was an early success in the aviation industry, Olive Ann Beech. From an early age, Beech knew how to manage finances. Born in 1903, she had her own bank account by the age of 7, and by 11 she had taken on the unusual childhood responsibility of keeping track of her family’s accounts. Already with a mind for business and finance, Beech enrolled in a business college in her home state of Kansas, where she studied stenography and bookkeeping. After college, she took a position in 1924 as a bookkeeper for Travel Air Manufacturing Company, a new commercial and passenger aviation company.
Beech was fundamental to the company’s growth, managing its correspondence, records, and financial dealings, and the organization quickly became the world’s largest commercial aircraft manufacturer. In a short time, she was promoted to office manager, and eventually became personal secretary to Walter Beech, one of Travel Air’s co-founders. Their working relationship became much more, and they married in 1930. As partners, they formed Beech Aircraft Company, and when Walter fell sick for a few months, Beech took over. With the onset of the U.S.’s entry into World War II, Beech Aircraft boomed, building over 7400 military aircraft over the course of the war.
When Walter died in 1950, Beech became president—the first woman president of a major aircraft company. She then took the company into the Space Age, establishing a research and development facility that supplied NASA with cryogenic systems, cabin pressurizing equipment for the Gemini program, and parts for the Apollo moon flights and Orbiter shuttle. Under Beech’s leadership, the company’s sales tripled.
In 1980, Beech Aircraft merged with Raytheon; Beech stayed on as chair of Beech Aircraft and was elected to Raytheon’s board of directors. Though Beech never piloted an aircraft herself, she was awarded the Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy that same year—the first woman to receive the award—for "five decades of outstanding leadership in the development of general aviation."
The month of March is Women’s History Month. We are going to feature some Women entrepreneurs that you may have never heard of. These remarkable ladies achieved some pretty amazing things and laid the pathway for every other woman that would come after them.
When 22-year-old Margaret Hardenbroeck arrived in New Amsterdam (later New York) from the Netherlands in 1659, she was ambitious and ready to work. She already had a job lined up—collecting debts for a cousin's business. She continued to work even after she married the wealthy merchant, Pieter de Vries, this time as a business agent for several Dutch merchants. She sold small goods, like cooking oil, to the colonists, and bought furs to send to Holland.
When Peter died in 1661, Hardenbroeck inherited his estate and took over his business. She expanded her fur shipping operations in Holland, trading the furs for merchandise to sell back in the colonies. For the Dutch, it was not wholly unusual for women to run businesses on equal footing with men; in New Amsterdam, they sometimes called themselves she-merchants. Hardenbroeck would become the most successful and wealthiest she-merchant in the colony.
Eventually, she was able to purchase her own ship, the King Charles, and accumulated real estate holdings throughout the colonies. Ever the savvy businesswoman, Hardenbroeck ensured that her wealth, properties, and independence were protected when she married her second husband, Frederick Philipse, by choosing an “usus” marriage under Dutch law. That meant she rejected marital guardianship of her husband and communal property, retaining all that was hers prior to marriage. When Hardenbroeck died in 1691, she was the wealthiest woman in New York.

This week, we are learning about a giant in the beauty world, Elizabeth Arden. She brought makeup from the stage to everyday life and slowly developed a global empire. Elizabeth Arden, born Florence Nightingale Graham in Woodbridge, Ontario, moved to New York at the age of 30 to pursue her dream of building a cosmetics corporation. There she began working with a chemist to create a beauty cream, something new for the cosmetics industry at that time.
After traveling to Paris in 1912, Arden became the first person to introduce the concept of eye makeup to American women and offered the first makeovers in her 5th Avenue salon. Arden died in 1966, but her brand became as well-known across the U.S. as Singer sewing machines and Coca-Cola. At the end of its fiscal year in June 2007, the company reported $1.1 billion in net sales, up more than 18 percent from $955 million in 2006.
Spring has sprung! What are you hoping to accomplish this season?
