Education
After completing his undergraduate studies cum laude at Mississippi State University, Dr. Jon Holmes received his dental degree summa cum laude from the University of Mississippi. He then earned his Medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he was the recipient of the Academic Achievement Award. Following a general surgery internship, he completed his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Holmes was subsequently named for the Dennis and Roberta R. Youde Fellow in Head and Neck Surgery at Legacy Medical Center in Portland, Oregon, where he received advanced training under internationally recognized surgeons, Eric J. Dierks, M.D., D.M.D. and Bryce E. Potter, M.D., D.M.D. Dr. Holmes returned to Birmingham where he served on faculty at UAB. In July 2002, he and Dr. Mark Clark joined practices at State-of-the-Art outpatient surgery facility located in Historic Southside. Dr. Holmes serves as a referral resource for doctors across the southeast, providing care for patients requiring complex oral and maxillofacial surgery. He is board certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial and has served as a Board examiner since 2009. In 2003, he was inducted into the American College of Surgeons, and in 2004 he was inducted into the American Head and Neck Society, only the second American trained OMS to be honored. Dr. Holmes maintains a strong interest in educating other doctors through his part-time teaching appointment , numerous scientific publications and invited lectures.

Dr. Holmes is board certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and has served as a Board Examiner since 2009.
Career Path/Organization Memberships
After time on the West Coast, Dr. Holmes returned to Birmingham where he served on the faculty at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He currently serves as a referral resource for doctors across the Southeast, providing care for patients requiring complex oral and maxillofacial surgery. Dr. Holmes maintains a strong interest in educating other doctors through his part-time teaching appointment, writings in numerous scientific publications, and invited lectures. He presently holds the position of Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at St. Vincent’s Hospital. Dr. Holmes is a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He is current president of the Alabama Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. In 2003, he was inducted into the American College of Surgeons, and in 2004 he was inducted into the American Head and Neck Society, only the second American trained oral and maxillofacial surgeon to be so honored.
The Current Practice
In July 2002, he and Dr. Clark joined practices at a state-of-the-art outpatient surgery facility located in the historic Southside neighborhood of Birmingham. They have since opened other locations in downtown Trussville and in the community of Inverness. The group offers a wide range of treatments, including extractions, orthognathic surgery, dental implants, cosmetic, and reconstructive procedures.
