There's nothing better than a soothing bowl of soup when you're feeling under the weather - but you don't have to wait until you're sick to enjoy it. In fact, homemade soups are often packed with vitamins, minerals and germ-fighting ingredients that help to keep you from getting sick in the first place. Try the recipe below made with turmeric, ginger, shitake mushrooms, onions and garlic for a nourishing immune-boosting option. Bonus: these ingredients are also great for the brain! Tips: Make a double batch and freeze leftovers for a quick meal when you aren't feeling your best. Move your body, it's good for your brain! A combination of aerobic and resistance exercises can significantly boost the brain power of the over 50s age group, finds the most comprehensive review of the available evidence to date, published online in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Aerobic exercise significantly enhanced cognitive abilities while resistance training had a pronounced effect on executive function, memory, and working memory. The evidence is strong enough to recommend prescribing both types of exercise to improve brain health in the over 50s, say the researchers. The findings suggest that an exercise program with components of both aerobic and resistance type training, of at least moderate intensity and at least 45 minutes per session, on as many days of the week as possible, is beneficial to cognitive function in adults aged over 50. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/04/170424215441.htm SCIENCEDAILY.COM Aerobic, resistance exercise combo can boost brain power of over 50s: Effects independent of current state of brain health, finds evidence review

You've all heard the popular saying, "Laughter is the best medicine." But does that type of thinking apply to something as serious as a global pandemic? Most psychologists would say yes. Humor helps people take back their sense of power in a powerless situation and it helps them connect with others—two things we have lost during this pandemic. The great thing about laughter is it activates important feel-good hormones in the brain while also reducing stress-related hormones like cortisol. Laughter also increases the number of antibody-producing cells we have working in our bodies. And, it enhances our T-cells, which are at the core of adaptive immunity and help tailor our immune response. All of this equates to a stronger immune system. A good, solid belly laugh may be exactly what you need to lighten the mood, relieve some stress, and feel better overall. We have been giving our brains and bodies quite a workout in Brain Boot Camp! Each week participants are given between 4-6 types of tasks with variations and modifications for each task. In each of these tasks, one or more domains of the brain are being targeted: memory, executive function, attention and processing speed. Balance exercises are also included as this is found to be increasingly important as we age. To increase the physical load, we may add weights or complete a more difficult move(s). To increase the cognitive load, we might increase the number of directions, give more complex directions or reverse the directions. Visual and auditory cues may be given seperately or in combination. Modifications can be made based on physical ability. We are gearing up for our winter offering of Brain Boot Camp, so stay tuned! Thanksgiving may look a little different this year, but the good news is there are ways to celebrate without putting yourself or others at risk. LOW RISK: A virtual dinner party is the safest and best option to connect with those who can’t travel to see you. Organize a start time to eat over Skype, Zoom, or FaceTime. If your gathering is smaller than usual, you can still go all out with those you live with. Make all your traditional dishes and then some. Sharing them with those you are closest to can be comforting during such an intense time. MODERATE RISK: If sticking to dining with people in your household isn’t going to cut it, the CDC suggests hosting an outdoor mealTrusted Source with a small group of family and friends who live in your community. If you have family or friends who are traveling a distance to join you, Jarrett says to remind them not to let their guard down. “Keep gatherings to… no one with symptoms. Extra precautions can include 10 to 14 days of quarantine [from] visitors before the event. Wear masks, distance, wash hands,” he said Visit your favorite fall farm Trying new experiences can help bring meaning to the season and create new traditions to enjoy. Are You a Face “Super-Recognizer”? It’s pretty clear that some people are much better at remembering faces than others. In fact, some people are considered “super-recognizers” for their ability to remember faces—even if the face doesn’t look quite the same on repeat viewings (due to aging, makeup, facial hair, and so on). Being able to identify people who are exceptionally gifted at recognizing faces can help pair them with jobs where that is an important skill.
