On Tuesday, Kids House hosted our 2020 Annual Meeting virtually for the first time at the Seminole County Sheriff's Office. During the meeting, we discussed the past year we’ve had at Kids House and what’s in store for our future with our partnering agencies.

Kids House leadership update! Kids House has added a few new members to our Leadership Team. Back in July, Christine Cornell became Kids House’s new CPT Program Director after serving as Senior CPT Case Coordinator for 2 years. And last week, Kids House’s Jennifer Napier transitioned to Development Director after serving as the Child Advocate Program Director for 8 years, and Patrick Van Dyke was promoted to Child Advocate Program Director after serving as the Senior Child Advocate for 5 years. #DidYouKnow? This year we’ve seen a decrease in our numbers since our children have been less visible in the community to our common reporters (i.e. teachers, doctors, etc). However, the severity of the child abuse and neglect cases have increased overall.

Did You Know that Kids House uses the CAC Model? At Kids House, we operate using the CAC Model. What that means is as a Children's Advocacy Center (CAC), Kids House provides a place where child abuse victims and their families can receive services and meet with Law Enforcement, Child Protection Services, Medical Professionals, Victim Advocate, Prosecution, and other professionals. The goal is to give the child a voice to tell their story ONCE to a trained interviewer, reduce re-victimization, and receive the support they need under one roof.

The therapeutic services offered at Children’s Advocacy Centers (CAC) may look a little different from conventional therapy. Using evidence-based treatment methods, our Mental Health team provides quality, trauma-focused therapy to children in our community. Treatment often includes using creative arts and play therapy, spending time with our certified facility dog, and working with non-offending caregivers.

Congratulations to Sheriff Lemma, who was recently honored to be the Government Leader Award recipient from United Abolitionists. Sheriff Lemma was nominated for his leadership to the SCSO toward combatting human trafficking, including having one of the region's first task forces. This award was named after the Polaris Star, also known as the North Star, and is what slaves used to find their way north to freedom along the Underground Railroad. This award is given to the “modern-day abolitionists in our community who are leading the fight against human trafficking in their profession and sphere of influence.”

Did you know that our Child Protective Team (CPT) Case Coordinators conduct forensic interviews to aid Law Enforcement and Child Protective Services in investigating child abuse? The forensic interview rooms are equipped with cameras and microphones, so Law Enforcement, Child Protective Services, and our medical providers can see the interview in real-time. This allows them to hear what happened, so the child doesn't have to repeat their story over and over again. The goal is to build rapport and allow the child a safe place to talk, in many cases for the first time, about their abuse in detail.

So excited! I did it! I passed my Assistance Dog International re-certification for public access this morning. It has been three years since I had to re-certify! They have to make sure I still know my commands, listen to Denise and generally behave myself! 😂 They were very impressed and complimentary of the work I am doing here at Kids House. So, I'm good for two more years before I have to be tested again! (But you know Denise tests me on a regular basis, just to make sure I don't forget anything!) 🥰 I wonder if I could get a special frosty treat to celebrate?! -Jordon

This #ThankfulThursday, we’d like to celebrate and congratulate Cherilyn, our Clinical Supervisor and Therapist, on celebrating 13 years with Kids House!
For the past year, our Therapists have been providing telehealth therapy sessions to our children and their families. Additionally, Cherilyn also conducts EMDR training for other mental health professionals throughout the pandemic. She is a wealth of knowledge, super funny, and passionate about helping children and their families impacted by trauma. Cherilyn is positively a valued member of our Kids House team and the community. We are truly lucky to have you! #ThankYou
