Are you wiping in the right direction? You’ve heard the rule to always wipe front to back after using the bathroom, but is it necessary or an old wives tale? There is a great reason to follow this rule. By wiping in the front, then the back, you’ll avoid transferring bacteria from your rectum to your urethra, which can result in a urinary tract infection. 📱 Call (631) 203-8893 today to schedule an appointment. We’re open and thrilled to be seeing patients. #trueorfalse #alwayslearning #fronttoback #Southbay
🚿 Want to feel fresh…down there? It’s easier than you think and no special scrubs or washes are needed. Let’s look at the big picture. Your vulva is made up of your external genitalia, like your pubic mound, labia and clitoris. Your vagina, of course, is the internal tube allowing for vaginal childbirth. For your vulva, mild soap and water are all you need to feel fresh. Your vagina will clean itself with discharge whenever there is an issue. Otherwise, let it be. Products like douches can alter the pH of your vagina, resulting in irritation and infection. We are open and seeing patients. A vaginal yeast infection affects up to 3 out of 4 women at some point in their lifetimes, with many women going through two episodes. But what are the signs to look for? ✔️ Redness and swelling of the vulva ✔️ Irritation and itching in the vagina and vulva ✔️ Vaginal pain, soreness and rash ✔️ Watery vaginal discharge ✔️ A thick, white, odor free vaginal discharge with the texture of cottage cheese ✔️ A burning sensation, especially while urinating or during intercourse Thankfully, medication can effectively treat a vaginal yeast infection. It can be spread through the mouth to genital contact, so be sure to contact your doctor if you’re experiencing symptoms. ⚠️ We are open! Did you know that thyroid disease can have an impact on your period? If your period becomes more frequent and lighter, it can be a sign of hypothyroidism. Heavier and less frequent periods can signal hyperthyroidism. Typically, thyroid disease is diagnosed in your 20s or 30s and it is most common in women, so if you’re noticing an irregular cycle, it may be a sign of a thyroid problem. Meditation is a huge stress reliever. But how do you know if you’re doing it right? 🧘 In meditation, right and wrong don’t factor in. Basically, if you’re trying, you’re doing something good for your well being. Try not to let your mind wander to your errands or to-do list. If that happens, just realize what you’re doing and try to bring your attention back to your breathing and to be present. With some effort and consistency, you’ll find your way into some mindful peace. ⚠️ We’re open and seeing patients! 🎀 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In 2019, over 268,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer were diagnosed among women and over 2,500 cases in men. Thanks to early diagnosis and advanced testing technology, more than 3.8 million women in the US with a history of breast cancer were alive and thriving. To lower your risk for breast cancer, have regular mammograms and /or sonograms and practice the following hints: *Get to and stay at a healthy weight, as both increased body weight and weight gain as an adult are linked with a higher risk of breast cancer after menopause. *Add physical activity, since moderate to vigorous physical activity is associated with lower breast cancer risk. Reaching or exceeding 300 minutes a week is ideal. *Limit alcohol intake as it increases the risk for breast cancer. If you do drink, keeping to one drink a day is best. Avoiding stress is not the easiest thing but there are small things you can do to make big changes in your day to day life. 🚶One is to take a brisk, ten-minute walk. Exercise boosts endorphins, which clears your head and reduces stress hormones. Pick a park, beach or other setting that is surrounded by the best of nature and give yourself a bit of time for reflection. Enjoy the leaves as they fall and the changing seasons to boost your spirits. Read more here: https://loom.ly/S4Wl1Rk . Need to make your annual appointment? 🍩 🧁 🍰 Can sweets hurt your fertility? Insulin is triggered when sugar enters the body. When processed sugars are consumed, insulin levels spike and flood the body. In the case of fertility, this can have a negative impact on egg maturation. Insulin and the hormones that mature egg cells are similar in their chemical makeup. If there is too much insulin in the bloodstream, it confuses the body, which lowers the egg-maturing hormone. If this happens regularly, it can decrease the amount of mature eggs, which in turn interferes with ovulation. 🍓 If you’re trying to conceive, make sure to cut down on processed sugars, opting instead for natural foods including sliced fruit or a handful of nuts as a healthy, satisfying snack. Is there a common age for menopause to begin? 👩 Although the average age for onset is 51, the majority of women stop having periods between 45 and 55. The start of declining ovary function can start years prior for some. Other women will have their menstrual cycles into their late 50s. Genetics impact when menopause will begin as will things like chemotherapy and smoking, which accelerate ovary decline, resulting in earlier menopause. 👨⚕️ What do you know about laparoscopic surgery? When a clear picture of the abdomen or pelvis is needed, beyond the scope of an ultrasound or x-ray can provide, laparoscopy gives your medical team the chance to view the organs. Cysts on the ovaries can be opened or punctured. Adhesions caused by the ovarian disease can be loosened. Many ectopic pregnancies can be treated this way, as well as many cases of endometriosis. We are happy to offer an array of laparoscopic procedures. These minimally invasive surgeries may be an option for you. 🩺 Discussing your medical and sexual history with a new doctor during your first intake visit can feel awkward. But not sharing information with your doctor can impede their ability to help you. One example is your doctor having the ability to determine your risk factors for cervical dysplasia and HPV infections. The number of sexual partners and having intercourse before the age of 18 can potentially make you more susceptible to HPV. Your doctor isn’t there to judge, so be an open book. 🎯 How are your resolutions going? Make it a point to take better care of your reproductive health in 2021. If you’re a smoker, one of the biggest gifts you can give to yourself is to stop smoking today. Smoking affects your overall health, including your reproductive health. If you’re dealing with infertility, a common contributing factor is smoking. For men, smoking affects the volume of the semen and lowers the sperm count. For women, smoking only 10 to 20 cigarettes per day can increase the FSH or urinary follicle-stimulating hormone levels, which affects the normal functioning of the menstrual cycle. It also lowers the count of eggs. Smoking can even cause the early onset of menopause. Commit to your health this year and give up the cigarettes. You’ll be glad you did. ⚠️ We are open and thrilled to be seeing patients! Call (631) 203-8893 today to schedule an appointment.
