A NOTE TO ALL OF OUR BOARDING CUSTOMERS:
Due to the increased number of Canine Influenza cases in our area, beginning March 1, 2017, Las Gaviotas Pet Hotel will now require that all dogs have an up to date Canine Influenza vaccine, in addition to the already required DHPP (distemper/parvo), Rabies, and Bordetella vaccines.
Canine Influenza is a highly contagious airbone viral infection that can spread quickly where there are many dogs in the same area, so we feel that we must require this vaccine now to protect our boarders, and keep our facility as safe and healthy as possible.
Although canine influenza presents some of the same systems as bordetella (kennel cough), both vaccines will be required because they are two different illnesses. Canine influenza is viral, whereas kennel cough is bacterial.
We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, and we hope that all of our customers understand that we are only doing it for the health and safety of all the dogs that board with us. We are very grateful for the trust that you give us to take care of your “furry family members”, and we are very dedicated to making sure they are kept safe, healthy, and happy while they are under our care.

You may have heard in the news lately about several outbreaks of Canine Influenza around the country. This infection can cause severe respiratory signs like coughing, sneezing, congestion, fever, and difficulty breathing. It can occasionally be fatal if not treated aggressively. Most of these outbreaks have been related to dog show events and no cases have been reported in the Tidewater area yet. If your pet travels to dog shows, boards often especially in a large kennel facility, goes to doggie day care with many other dogs or does training classes of any kind, we recommend your pet be protected by vaccination. The newest Canine influenza vaccine is a bivalent (two strain) vaccine and is more protective than the previous Canine influenza vaccines. It requires two vaccines one month apart then it is given yearly. Even if your dog has been vaccinated to influenza previously (with monovalent vaccine) they will require the two shot series initially to start the bivalent vaccine.
