One of our wonderful clients brought in not only their dog Roxy to see Dr. Emily but also made Dr. Emily a mask! We love and appreciate all of our clients and their furry family members but this definitely made Dr. Emily’s day! A sweet pug with a sweet family!
Some of you might remember this fellow! It’s Sampson! At the beginning of 2020 we helped rescue this kiddo. When he first came to us her weighed a whole 40 LBS! We helped find him a home with one of our relief doctors. He goes on 3 mile walks and is down to 27 LBS. he had a dental with us and is doing great. We loved seeing him and are so happy to see him continuing his weight loss journey.
Jack is riding in style on his way home from a re-bandage for a broken leg! I think he is enjoying his extra special love from his family and little girl! The one joy to the curbside assistance is getting to see our furry friends snuggle in the comfort of their family and their own belongings. He is on the road to recovery and contentment. Let’s send Jack some love and good vibes for a fast recovery!

Lots of people often have trouble visualizing what their overweight animals should look like at a pet weight. Veterinarians will give various descriptions to owners, such as how there should be a tuck in the waist visible from both the top down and from the side profile for many breeds. Here are some outlined photos of overweight dogs to show what a rough acceptable weight would look like on them. Every breed is unique and will have different attributes for their build and body style depending on their lineage.

IMPORTANT
Keep your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds, if you cannot hold it there without discomfort, please do not walk your dog.
I've attached a link to some doggie boots, they should ONLY be used in the heat if you have no other option and should only be used for potty breaks. Dogs sweat through their paws and the boots essentially make their paws a sauna with the boots on. They are really only meant for extended use for COLD weather and rough terrain. If it’s too hot to need boots it’s too hot for your dog to be outside.

BAKED POTATO COSTUME!
With a name like #Potato - I had no choice but to dress Potato up as ... a Fully-Loaded Baked Potato for #Halloween this year!!! Oh my gosh. How ridiculous does she look!!! And because she's so tiny, I made the baked potato costume in miniature size! Everything was so small, I had to use chopsticks to glue on the teeny bacon bits and chives. 😂 Now if you're wondering what about Mizu and Heaven? Don't they get a costume? Oh, they sure do! That will be my next post! #HappyHalloween everyone! Potato is so yummy, now I want to eat a baked potato! 🥔💕🐭

Spot the Signs: Identifying pain in our pets.
A visual aid can be an important tool in addition to detailed descriptions. So let's talk about it! Rats are a prey species, and unfortunately as a result, they purposely hide subtle symptoms of pain and illness until they cannot anymore. Prey animals do this to keep themselves from becoming targets of would-be predators.
This little lady is Lilly. In the photos below, you can see some great examples of how to identify pain/discomfort in your pets. She showed signs of distress approximately 1 day before labor which required my assistance, but went on to deliver babies safely later in life.
-------------------------‐-------------------‐---------------------
🚩 Squinted eyes. A rat experiencing physical discomfort will often have a tense expression with squinted eyes. Rats with ruby/red/pink eyes have poorer vision than those with black eyes, so you may notice them on the squinty side more often. It's good to look for multiple signs of pain for this reason.
🚩 Excessive Porphyrin. This alarms new owners who are concerned that their pets are bleeding from the nose or eyes. It is simply discharge that is almost orange in color, but that is quick to dry and turn a brown tone, which is when it can be mistaken for blood. It's somewhat common to see this around the eyes before they wash their face after waking. But if it's excessive or is seen around both the nose and eyes, the critter is not feeling well and should be taken in for a wellness check with your vet.
🚩 Posture. While experiencing pain or discomfort, rats will often appear to be "hunched", standing with a tense, tight form with four paws closer together, and may waddle to keep themselves from stretching due to their discomfort. It almost looks as if they have no neck during this time, due to their tense neck and shoulders.
🚩 Raised fur. This one could be trickier to identify for rats with rex or other coat types, but not impossible! A healthy rat has a coat that appears to be tight against their bodies, whereas a rat who is unwell will become puffed up and almost "spikey" in appearance.
🚩 Side sucking. In very severe cases of pain, a rat may suck their sides inward. It can be easily seen by examining your rat from above while they stand on a flat surface.
Our friends have incredibly subtle and sometimes fleeting body language. While this makes their behavior a fascinating subject, I hope this list aids you in learning more about your pets in their time of need! I recommend taking a photo like Lilly's "before" photo once a month. This will give you a base line to compare to if you're ever feeling unsure about your pet's expression and posture. 😊
Dental health is always a huge importance in our pets lives. Bad dental health can cause more than just bad breath for our furry friends. It can cause infections, heart problems, sinus issues among many others. Ask us about your pets teeth next time they are in. We can help guide and teach you about how to better your pets health and mouth! Check out all these pretty choppers.

We have been seeing more counterfeit Seresto Collars. Most of these collars are bought online. Our first clue to a counterfeit Seresto Collar is clients saying it does NOT work and the pet has fleas. We can easily tell if the collar is counterfeit. Most of the counterfeit collars have an odor and/or the container looks like the labels are glued on. This collar below, we had a client bring in today, was the best counterfeit we have seen. We contacted Bayer (maker of Seresto) and it is a counterfeit. Seresto collars should have NO dates on the tin. The inside of the tin color should have a metallic sheen. The print on the collar should be lasered/etched in collar, not stamped on collar . The FDA is warning consumers to be cautious when buying any medication or preventative for your pet online. Buy from a reputable store or veterinarian. When in doubt ask us or call the the maker of the product.(1-800-255-6826 is Bayer’s Consumer Contact Number)

Turns Out, Hats On Snakes Are A Thing!
Dr. Kleinberger and the rest of Legacy got to make a new friend today! Little Craig came in for a visit and was a wonderful and cooperative patient for the girls working with him. We were told his home has many other “cousins” and that we may get to do their check ups here soon too. Craig wasn’t able to give us his two thumbs up so Doctor K. helped out with that as well. We are excited to follow his growth and see him at future visits.
